"They really like bread," Thomson said. Thomson raised his first pig last year. "I named it and everything," he said. "Since we didn't take him to the fair (because of COVID-19), we had to take him to the slaughterhouse." Thomson did not name his pig this year. While Thomson and his family worked to herd their pigs into their pins, other 4-Hers set up fans to keep their pigs cool throughout the week. As she waited on a water dish, Haley Steffener, 15, of Sperry, sprayed water into her hog Fred's mouth. Fred looked grateful for the relief. Steffener has been showing pigs at the fair since she was in fourth grade, a tradition that began with her aunt and uncle and carried on by her and her 11-year-old brother, Luke.
