VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – At The Shack on Virginia Beach’s Oceanfront, every hour starting at noon Thursday was New Year’s Eve.
“With the whole world experiencing the pandemic together, we would celebrate the world’s New Year’s Eve one hour at a time,” said Eric Emerson, general manager for The Shack and sister restaurants, Chix on the Beach and Waterman's. “As the time zones change around the world, we’ll celebrate wherever it is 2021 at that moment.”
5 p.m. EST meant it was midnight in South Africa. Other countries and cities were celebrated, including Bangkok, Paris and Ireland.
