Activity at the Hill Division of Bates Manufacturing Co. in Lewiston has been curtailed to the point that within a couple of days there will only be a handful of maintenance workers at the plant, the Journal learned today. According to H. L. Gosselin, assistant to the president of the Bates Mill. Co., the three or four persons still employed in the Inspection department will be affected by the layoff in a few days. Gosselin was reached this afternoon at the Bates’ offices in New York City. Gosselin told the Journal that although operations have been drastically curtailed, “No decision has been made to close the mill.”
