Mass. gas prices average $2.56, up 9 cents, after week of closed refineries The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline sold in Massachusetts has spiked 9 cents in the past week, with analysts blaming the temporary closing of refineries due to inclement weather in various parts of the country. The average price for a gallon of gas this week is $2.56, according to AAA Northeast's weekly survey. That's up from $2.47 last week. “When close to 40% of U.S. crude production is offline because refineries are closed, there is going to be pain at the pump until operations resume,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast's director of public and government affairs, in a statement. “The good news is the nearly two dozen impacted refiners are expected to restart operations this week, if they haven’t already.”
