Nashville resident Bone Boutsisomphone, known to his friends as Bone, was born in Laos. When he was a child, his family moved to Thailand as a result of the Vietnam War. Laotian children were being taken at night to fight, he said. In 1980, his family moved to South Dakota, and in 1985, they ended up in Nashville. When he was 16, Bone ran away from home. An unhoused couple watched over him and made sure his wallet wasnât stolen. Since that day, Bone has been a friend to the unhoused community. (He says the people with whom he works prefer the term unhoused instead of homeless.) He advocates and cares for them in ways some would describe as radical.
