More photos show Highway 1 damage; reopening date unknown FacebookTwitterEmail A long stretch of California's Highway 1, the famously scenic route that snakes along the Big Sur coastline, remains closed after a section of the road washed away amid heavy rain, creating a 150-foot gap at Rat Creek about 20 miles south of Big Sur. Caltrans said in a statement Monday that while work is underway to repair the road, and the stretch of road closed is decreasing from 44 miles to 22.8 miles, there is no current timeline for the complete reopening of road. The northern limit of the closure is now located at South Coast Center near Post Mile 34 and the Esalen Institute. The southern closure, currently at Ragged Pont, will be moved north to Willow Creek Road at Post Mile 11.2 on Monday at 6 p.m., Caltrans spokesperson Kevin Drabinski said.
