Nearly 3 billion lawsuit in which he plays a starring role. Others at fox news do as well. And then a Battle Of The Ages and for the ages, of course, tom brady versus Patrick Mahomes in the super bowl tomorrow, coming up later this hour, were going to talk about that as well. I want to start, though, with nbcs mike memoli traveling with the president in wilmington, delaware, and nbcs ali vitali on capitol hill. Thanks for joining us on this. Mike, i want to start with you on this one and the president s worry, shall we say, about the former President Trump. This is the first time that you had a former president who essentially is going to be barred from Intelligence Briefings, right . Reporter well, yasmin, thats right. This would be the case if thats the final decision thats made by the white house but you know what . This is par for the course because the last time i was speaking to you from here in wilmington, it was during the president ial transition and what was one of the storylines of that transition . It was the fact that thenPresident Trump was withholding from President Elect joe biden the president ial daily brief that he should have been getting access to as the President Elect. In fact, it was several weeks after the election that biden finally did have access to that president ial daily brief. And so, this is all a sort of a bit of a war of words here as a number of democrats, including the chairman of the house intelligence committee, has been calling for weeks for biden to consider taking this step. The white house, up until this point, has said simply that this is a matter that the Intelligence Community is currently reviewing, whether former President Trump should have access to intelligence, and it was only last night when the president himself weighed in directly on this in an interview with cbss nora odonnell. Lets take a listen to what biden said. Should former President Trump still receive Intelligence Briefings . I think not. Why not . Because of his erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection. I just think that theres no need for him to have that Intelligence Briefing. What value is giving him an Intelligence Briefing . What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and Say Something . Reporter so, the White House Press secretary, jen psaki, followed up on bidens comments last night in a statement to nbc news today, saying, simply, that biden was expressing his concern about the fact that trump could get access to this classified information, but she also said that he has trust in the Intelligence Community to make the proper decision here about what would happen if President Trump were to ask for access to classified information, and thats an important distinction to make here. Our colleague, ken dilanian, reported in november that the former president s of the United States only have access to information in rare occasions. When theyre traveling overseas, typically classified intelligence is made available to them or if the current president asks for the former president to sort of consult with him on an important issue. I have a feeling, yasmin, that President Biden is not calling up President Trump to ask for his advice or his consultation on a lot of Foreign Policy issues. And so it seems pretty clear here that thats unlikely to be the case and adam schiff, in a new tweet this afternoon, is sort of echoing this idea. He says that the American People can sleep more soundly knowing that this will not be making its way to President Trump. Yeah, im going to get on board with you on that bet, mike memoli. Full well knowing that we really dont think joe biden, the president , is calling up the former president and asking for advice. Ali, lets talk about relief here. The president saying there are areas that he is actually willing to compromise on, but not specifically on the 1,400 relief checks. Reporter yeah, yasmin, thats kplaktly right and its not exactly surprising because even when i was trading off with mike memoli on that balcony in wilmington during the transition, those 1,400 direct Stimulus Checks were a key part of then President Elect bidens plan for covid relief and theyre a key part now as hes starting to compromise a little bit on different parts of this plan but that is a Central Tenet he has made clear he is not compromising on, and even on the hill here, you think about why democrats have two Democratic Senators from georgia. Its because those two men really campaigned on getting those 1,400 checks to americans. Now, democrats have begun the process of making good on those promises. Yesterday, both the house and Senate Voting to unlock budget reconciliation. This allows democrats to really go it alone on this legislation, to try to push through that roughly 1. 9 trillion relief plan. But really, were still at the start of the process. The way that you can think about where were at right now, its as if biden put out the bones of what he wants this plan to look like, things like the 160 billion towards vaccine distribution, the 1,400 checks to americans, but now its up to committees here on the hill to actually start fleshing out the specifics of what this legislation is going to look like. Thats going to be a key part Going Forward here, but it also means that some of the things that the Biden Administration has laid out on their initial wish list arent necessarily going to be making it in because of the realities here on the hill. That, for example, brings you to biden talking about how the 15 federal minimum wage hike that some democrats wanted probably is not going to end up in this package. Listen to why. Im prepared, as president of the United States, on a separate negotiation on minimum wage to work my way up from what it is now, which is look, no one should work 40 hours a week and live below the poverty wage. And if youre making less than 15 an hour, youre living below the poverty wage. But that may not be in your American Rescue plan. No, i put it in, but i dont think its going to survive. Reporter and yasmin, Bill Crafting takes time. The reality is here on the hill, make things move a little bit more slowly, especially when youre cobbling together something where theres a lot of competing interests here. But there is sort of a hard deadline the democrats are eventually going to run up against. Some of these jobless benefits actually run out in midmarch, certainly theyre going to want to have this passed before then and then theres the reality where everyone agrees that the billions of dollars that need to go to states and local governments that are trying to get this vaccine out of the vials and into americans arms, that money needs to get out there as soon as possible. Yasmin . So, ali, just quickly, then, whats the timing on this thing, then, with the way that you kind of drew this out for us . When could americans actually expect checks in their mailboxes . Well, look, you could put the Rosie Timeline at some point in the next few weeks. Nancy pelosi has said that she would like to see a bill on the floor of the house in the next two weeks. But remember, while the house might want to move on this, it is also going to have to go to the senate, and starting on tuesday, theres an Impeachment Trial thats about to kick off. We dont actually know how long that is going to go, but its hard to juggle these two competing interests, especially two things that are as head lineworthy as impeachment and trillions of dollars in stimulus and relief. Were talking impeachment next. Mike memoli, thank you as always as well. The historymaking second Impeachment Trial of donald trump is now just three days away. Nbcs monica alba joins us from west palm beach, florida, where the former president is staying. Monica, good to see you. We have a little more insight into the strategy of the former president s legal team. Talk us through it. Reporter a bit of a window, thats right, yasmin. Last night, one of the former president s lawyers, bruce caster, was on fox news, essentially saying were going to fight video with video, since you know that the democrats and those House Impeachment Managers have said they plan to show a lot of the realtime moments from what unfolded on january 6th on capitol hill. Theyre, of course, going to be using lawmakers own accounts of what took place, but theyre for sure going to be relying on Donald Trumps own words at that rally where he encouraged his supporters to, quote, fight like hell and take to the capitol. Of course, hours later, they even breached the grounds and then proceeded to engage in this now deadly riot that took place a month ago today. But were hearing a little bit more of a window, an insight into what kind of video the former president s team is going to use, and theyre talking about some of the social unrest that unfolded last summer and what democrats said at the time about people being allowed to use some of their First Amendment rights. Take a listen to what bruce caster had to say during an interview on fox news last night. Theres an awful lot of tape of cities burning and courthouses being attacked and federal agents being assaulted by rioters in the street cheered on by democrats, but here, when you have the president of the United States give a speech and says you should peacefully make your thinking known to the people in congress, hes All Of A Sudden a villain. Reporter thats a bit of a preview there, yasmin. We also know what we dont expect to see is former President Donald Trump testifying in any way. We know they rejected that request from congressman jamie raskin. We also dont expect to see him submit a written letter, which is something that was under consideration from the first team of attorneys we were talking about a week ago that have obviously since left that team because they parted ways over that indecision about legal strategy since donald trump wanted them to focus on baseless claims of election fraud. Theres no mention of that in the current pretrial brief but theyre expected to issue more on monday, so well be on the lookout for that as we continues to push those unsubstantiated claims, yasmin. Monica alba, thank you as always. By the way, were going to be doing a special on the upcoming impeachment in the 4 00 p. M. Hour tomorrow. Its going to be all impeachment all day starting next tuesday on msnbc. So in the midst of a bumpy rollout, New York City is extending its vaccination efforts. This weekend, Yankee Stadium is now operating as a Vaccination Hub targeting black and latino communities in the bronx. Those groups listed are among the hardest hit by this pandemic. With me now is nbcs Aaron Gilchrist and nbc news medical contributor dr. Kavita patel. Welcome to you both, guys, appreciate it. Aaron, i want to start with you because i want to get the 411 on the opening of Yankee Stadium, how its going, how theyre getting the word out, that kind of thing. Reporter yasmin, its actually going really well today. Hundreds of people have already come through here since the doors opened at 8 00 this morning and received their vaccinations. No line for folks who are trying to get in who have appointment buzz you take a look over here, all of these people are hoping to get an appointment to come back to Yankee Stadium to get their vaccinations. Look, the reality is that the bronx has had the highest covid19 Positivity Rate of all the five boroughs here in New York City, and so the city and state said they needed to put a place, a venue in the bronx that was just for residents of the bronx who are primarily black and latino so that they could come to a place thats familiar to them to be vaccinated. The organization somos, a group of doctors and Healthcare Providers here in New York City, is that group is running this location. They are they feel as though they are familiar to the community here and for that reason, they hope that people who maybe were reluctant to go farther out into the community to get a vaccination will come here to get a vaccination from doctors they already know. 15,000 appointments made available for residents of the bronx in this first week of vaccinations here at Yankee Stadium. And the hope is that in the weeks to come, theyll be able to vaccinate more and more people who live here specifically in this high covid Positivity Rate area. Yasmin, back to you. Hey, aaron, just quickly, are the folks that are getting vaccinated right now at Yankee Stadium, are they still above the age of 65 and frontline Healthcare Workers . Are those the only people getting vaccinated within the black and latino communities . Reporter absolutely, yes. They are only vaccinating people who are in the eligible groups right now, 1a and 1 b. Thanks, aaron. The importance of these Mass Vaccination Sites, these were in the works in many cities, in boston, they opened up fenway park, Gillette Stadium is also an area in which theyre using for Mass Vaccination Sites. We know the president is mobilizing the Defense Production Act to support hubs like, for instance, Yankee Stadium. How important is it to have facilities like this in the Vaccine Rollout . Hi, yasmin, good afternoon. Its incredibly important, but i think what aaron said is critical also. Its no not just setting up the Mass Vaccination Sites but its having the community participate in the awareness, because we also know that these stadiums can be sitting there, like fenway was, with unused appointment slots. If people dont know whats happening, and dont have an easy way to access it, it doesnt work. So, it has to be kind of the two things together, Community Participation and support and these the infrastructure inside the community. Can we talk about Johnson Johnson . We know that they requested Emergency Authorization from the fda for its single shot, which is amazing news, obviously, a single shot is going to kind of change the game for this whole thing. The vaccine, though, the efficacy it seems right now is 72 in the u. S. , 66 globally. Compared to pfizer and moderna, which are both over 90 , should we be at all concerned about the difference and the efficacy rates between these different vaccines or is it more just about getting it out there . No. We should not be concerned and i know that goes counter to the way our brains think, the higher the number, the better. But the reason we should not be concerned is because number one, all of these vaccines have been basically 100 in preventing death, and the Johnson Johnson vaccine, as well, has had an 85 Risk Reduction for severe disease, so when you put that together, its highly effective, and keep in mind, yasmin, the moderna and pfizer trials were done at a time when we did not have the presence of these variants in the countries that they did trials so theyre different kinds of vaccines and i think of them as apples and oranges so in short, any of the vaccines, as you know, will be highly effective, and we should just get them out as quickly as possible, and were already seeing some early promising signs in Nursing Homes where we have had a number of people vaccinated where cases and deaths have dropped. So, it is within reach to have some of the worst part of this virus behind us. Hey, dr. Patel, i just quickly want you to weigh in on this because theres a New York Times piece that was published earlier this week describing this kind of cautious optimism, right, because of the Vaccine Rollout and so many people getting their vaccines. But then theres the other side of the cone. There was actually a doctor quoted in this article saying that his optimism has faded in recent weeks due to aggressive covid19 variants. There was actually a bloomberg study as well saying they dont believe were actually going to be getting back
