MSNBCW Yasmin July 4, 2024

We would then hear from fani willis herself . The timing is still uncertain. Now we know that the set to testify is change. They could decide not to column. And i set up a scenario where we can hear as early as tuesday. We dont know, it is unclear where the other witnesses, three other names we have heard that have not been able to report that. It is unclear when it is testifying. One very important witnesses testifying today. It could come as early as tuesday. Just everyone is clear, the two days that normally this grander means will be on mondays in tuesdays, correct . Exactly. We could see it extended, who knows . There is a lot of moving parts here. There is so much potential with these defendants. So much possibility of a Special Session as well as what has happened in the past with other great juries. Thank you for bringing that down for us. We appreciate. It for reaction we want to bring in msnbc legal analyst and former manhattan assistant va, catherine christian. Catherine, thank you for joining us on this. We appreciate it, give me first a reaction to what we are hearing now about this possible timeline it seems to be shaking up. We will be hearing from, of, course the Atlanta Journalconstitution that the former lieutenant will be testifying in front of the Fulton County grand jury. Sometime on tuesday. What do you make of it . My question is, will he be the last witness . And then while the prosecutor say to the grand jury, that concludes the presentation of the evidence in the case . Now we leave you to deliberately invoke . Or, is he just one of many witnesses. They will be going into next week. If he was the last witness, and then they put additional evidence in, they could take the vote, on tuesday, and then have an indictment on tuesday. It is unclear whether that will happen. I think most people there are wildly will be an indictment. Who will be indicted . What charges . How many people will the d. A. Go for and charge the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organization . That would mean that there would be multiple defendants. She will be proving that there is a Complex Criminal Scheme to interfere with and overturning the results of the election in georgia. If you see that charms than you know that there will be multiple defendants. I think that is what we are waiting for. The fact that the Lieutenant Governor testify on tuesday, it doesnt let us know whether not there will be an indictment. We will certainly find out. You heard, greg, how kathryn laid it out. How the former u tenant governor is obviously a key witness to this whole thing. If you look at how the dea setting this case up and presenting it to the grand jury, what would be your assumption when it comes to putting a key witness, like the former Lieutenant Governor, forward . That highlights to me that, probably, the former president of the United States will be one of those people who is part of the indictment. You have a recorded phone call of the secretary of state. He also called, he meaning mr. Trump, they were not recorded. The governor of the state. The Attorney General of the state. There were a lot of moving parts to this alleged conspiracy. There was tampering with Voting Machines in one county. We know that rudy giuliani, coconspirator number one, came to a state Senate Meeting she has now admitted that false things were said about what was going on. There could be a number of defendants there are number of moving parts that means there will probably be a rico charge we dont know it is clear that she is very expensive. Particularly since that Lieutenant Governor is gonna be testifying. Another thing i want you to drawn is the expansiveness of this week or charge. Specifically to the state. I know that, normally, these Racketeering Charges used, for instance, in gang cages it is a very broad charging decision. Specifically for the state of georgia. This particular d. A. , d. A. Willis, has used this charge successfully. She used it against school most raiders. In georgia, the enterprise, which is defined as a group that is formed for a common purpose. A legal purpose. The enterprise does not have to be and illegal on. The School Administrators were clearly part of this legal enterprise. She has had success using it for School Administrators, teachers. She has used it for gang cases. It is not just for Organized Crime as we think about the mom. That is why it is created. Now it has been extended to any complex any complex group of persons shes going to charge that if it is appropriate catherine christian, thank you so much for jumping on this. We appreciate you. While all of this is breaking, the former president United States has arrived in iowa. It is his first public appearance since his judge in the public appearance case issued a protective order on friday. You can see him through the crowd there. There he is emerging amongst the crowd. Of, course that order restricting the discussion of some discovery evidence. Warning trump that inflammatory remarks could speed up the trial. Joining us from des moines as msnbcs tally, who has quite a view to say the least. Oh my gosh, olivia tally. I can always count on you for the. Best talk to us. We always want to bring you the best, you have been. That is the goal. There is nothing better, if you are at the state fair, they getting above the fray and looking at it from up here. The candidates are campaigning. Many of the folks here are getting the chance to do what you do with iowa state fair. s gladhand, meet the candidates face to face. Be able to ask them their questions. The conversation on the ground, yes, folks are aware of the indictments, plural, against the former president. We have spoken to people who think they are not a big deal. We have spoken to people who think theyre disqualifying. I also spoke with former South Carolina governor, nikki haley, just in the last hour or so. Asking her if those are the issues that were resonating on the ground. Look, this is a state, i want politics that is supposed to function based off of the retail off of the gladhanding off of going into those diners trump has been calling in an out not really doing much of this at all listening to my conversation with nikki haley about that. For someone like the former president , who is doing a rally and dipping out, the polls havent changed much. What do you make of that . It is early. Once you look at the debate stage, once you look at the options, americans will engage. Right now theyre only talking about what the media is talking about. The media lots to talk about trump. That is what they are talking about. Americans are not talking about trump. When im in iowa, new hampshire, South Carolina, we are talking with the fact we are 32 Trillion Dollars into. That is what they care about. They are not talking about trump. Look, im of the mindset, yasmin, that voters can hold space for both. Certainly, in my conversations, they are. They are thinking about the economy, inflation, reproductive access. Those are all conversations that i have with voters. We are also looking at what is happening with the former president. That resonates here in a place like this. You watch the frenzy around the former president on a day like today. It goes to show you that he is still the person who is driving the conversation. Whether you look at on the ground or the you look at it up here from 30,000 feet. Not quite 30,000 feet. [laughs] that would be bad, if you are currently at 30,000 feet. It would be pretty interesting. Give year photographer a shutout for making that shot look beautiful. Ali vitali for us. Thank you, we appreciate it. All right, everybody. I want to switch cues here. We have all been seeing the devastation happen and why. Lets get to the latest there with the fires that are continuing. The death toll is now up to 80. Four days later questions are growing about whether everything that could and should have been done to save lives really was. Nbcs Steve Patterson is in maui for us not far from the disaster zone. Steve, the images coming out of there right now are devastating. Hawaii numbers are rising. That puts it at one of the deadliest wildfires in modern u. S. History. Officials say it is not slowing down. Meanwhile, people are trying to get back into their homes. This is the line into lahaina. There is a roadblock at the end. People who have been waiting in the sign for 15 plus hours. People who need medication. People wondering about their friends and family. People with pets behind. People who need a place wondering if their homes are standing. There was a roadblock here, this was taken down for a few minutes. Traffic was flowing for about 90 minutes. People waiting several hours to get to the fine and then they are told around and told you go another route. This is what has been going on. A lot of miscommunication with law enforcement. People are frustrated and they have been waiting for someone to get back into their homes. They are also, according to the mayor and the governor, and warnings from both of them, it will be difficult when they get back there. You are right, they are not a whole lot left. We explore that on the ground in the haina. Take a look. The grim Reality Setting in. Residents returning to the charred neighborhoods where their homes once stood. Why is governor saying it was like an atomic bomb hit. Warning locals to brace themselves. Everybody lost everything. The view from above showing the apocalyptic scene of whats left after raging wildfire swept to the island on tuesday taking nearly everything in its path. Homes flattened, lines of cars incinerated. The Historic Town of lahaina in ruins. Nbc news tom giannis telling the water and supplies to those in need. It has been heartbreaking. It is hard to even put into words what we have seen out here. The exact cause of the fire still unknown. Dramatic new video now emerging showing the frantic moments as people jumped in the water to escape the flames. It was a very challenging situation for our small boat. Crews rescue teams combing through one destroyed building after another. Its the most heartbreaking thing ive ever been through. Residents making their way through the burns on over the weekend. The line of traffic to get back into the Highness Drenching for miles. Its horrendous. And we are just trying to figure out what we have. If we have anything at all. Many who evacuated, Shock Incitement now turning to questions. Usually they put on the Hurricane Sirens where they do something to warn us. Nothing. Like, everyone was just Word Of Mouth evacuating. Some residents here why they didnt hear warnings from the alarm system before the fires erupted. Why is governor tying nbc news that telecommunication was severely impacted by fire and high winds. Much of the equipment was destroyed with a fire. It is a very remote place. Of course, we would never diminish any kind of responsibility. We will leave it to behemoth which is Emergency Management team to find things going for. It according to the why urgency Services Administration including, volunteer, via radio alerts. We are back live you can see people, again, in lines according to this one woman transporting insulin. She says that medications, Passivity Medication to people in need is the biggest concern right now on the island in general. People need heart medication, people need diabetes medication. People need also to medication. They cant do it unless they can get past these roadblocks. That is what citizens are asking for. Meanwhile, the attorney is also investigating the Emergency Response from officials as the fire with breaking out. We should learn more about that later. Right now this remains a Search And Rescue operation. Yasmin . Unbelievable. We are gonna have a lot more coming out of maui in the next few hours. Steve pounds, and thank you for now. This backtoschool season, downy and tide are giving back with 1. 5 Million Dollars in scholarships. Enter to win. Welcome back. Attorney general, Merrick Garland, making it somewhat surprising move friday and 100 violent case. He elevated event wise, the trump appointed special attorney to Special Counsel. Weiss has been overseeing the matter since 2018. The move came just moments before prosecutor said they reached an impasse with the fence lawyers and that the case would now likely go to trial. A plea deal also fell apart at the lastminute. Joining me now to talk more about this msnbc White House Correspondent back with us. Msnbc legal analyst and former manhattan what has been the response so far from the white house . Yes maam, and the response so far has been one of silence. The president ignored questions about this last night as he left the what have to we expect him to react the same way if and when we do see him later today. As far as yesterday we know the white house found out about this appointment of the Special Counsel does like the lester bus. No advanced notice. Not too surprising. It follows along the lines of how other communication, from the doj, has gone. But the white house is now referring any questions about this to the doj, as well as Hunter Bidens attorneys that put out a statement yesterday saying they expect, quote, a fair resolution at the end of all of this. I think the question now, more broadly, its how if it all does the biden Team Strategy shift after this . They thought that Hunter Bidens legal woes would be all wrapped up less than a month ago. After that, since unraveled plea deal, this is obviously extended. Now it is looking like this will go to trial during the president s reelection bid. As you mentioned in the intro there, this has already been used as political ammunition by republicans against the president. There is no science that is gonna be slowing down anytime soon. They are criticizing the Attorney General for even allowing weiss to continue overseeing this case. The question is, how does the biden team defend itself from republicans over something it is not even supposed to be talking about . It wants to respect the dignity, the independents of the Special Counsel, of the justice department. They often want to respect the standpoint from President Biden. He has said, repeatedly, that he is a loving ander of hunter. Hunter biden, of, course a very visible and public Family Member threw out his fathers administration. Whether or not that changes, how if it all the changes, its something we are deeply going to be monitoring, yasmin. Thank you, lets get into a couple of these things. Lets get into substance and then possible Change Of Venue if that does happen. We found curious at the New York Times reporting what was happening while the Special Counsels being appointed this is from the New York Times lawyers from hunter biden prosecutors working with David Weiss The Federal Prosecutor Delaware were still trying to negotiate a plea deal. Charging mr. Biden over the past week. How do you square that with the announcement coming from the Attorney General that, in fact, the Special Counsel had been that these two things are happening simultaneously. Because, first of, all no competent attorney would allow her client to plead guilty in the middle of an investigation unless the investigation ends. It was shocking to me a few weeks ago that the defense was not aware that that was not part of the deal. You remember the plea broke down when the judge said, does the plea cover all of the charges . The prosecutor said, no. The defense and yes. I think what happened is the Defense Attorneys were still trying to get the prosecutor to say, investigation over. They, because they are competent Defense Attorneys said, lets go to trial. Im not economic line not have a black cloud of the possible diamond overhead o
