But, in the meantime, i just want to level set on what we have seen in washington over the last couple of days. One Republican Congressman said that the last week was, like quote, riding a mechanical bull. That is quite a visual, but pretty accurate. The president is going to weigh in after Congress Managed to pass a short term funding bill that will keep the government open for the next 47 days. Now, preventing a Government Shutdown is obviously good news. And so is the fact that the final bill did not include any of the devastating cuts to Domestic Violence programs that have been on the table. So, for the time being, as for right now, House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy has managed to avoid a complete disaster of republicans own making. By relying on democratic votes to get him over the finish line. Congratulations are in order, i guess . But before you all think, wow, maybe government is functioning again in washington, not quite. Because, even though mccarthy tried to please his friends by not including funding for ukraine, there is now the question of whether or not he will keep his speakership. Earlier today, hes going to put forward a motion to vacate, and its basically a motion to kick mccarthy out of his job. I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker Mccarthy. This week, i think we need to rip off the bandaid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy. For his part, mccarthy said today, bring it on. So, is there an alternative candidate for speaker who could get enough votes . Who knows. But remember, it took 15 rounds last time for mccarthy to get elected. So another round, or 15 rounds of votes for speakership could become an incredibly distracting time suck. But of course, matt gaetz does not really care a lot about that. This also raises the question of whether or not and what else kevin party might agree to her to hold on to his speakership ahead of another spending fight. Those members who want to slash the budget of the Justice Department retaliation for investigations into donald trump will still be there. Maybe even more power. Those members insisting on hard right immigration reform, they are not going anywhere either. In many, ways this continue resolution its kicking the can down the road, just putting a similar fight where Hundreds Of Thousands of government employees, recipients of Government Programs for low income families, travelers over the holidays will again be riding that mechanical people waiting for a resolution right before thanksgiving. Now, some members like acknowledging the house that they, are quote, baffling round with these whack jobs not holding back their congressman bacon. This entire saga has just been another example of the dysfunction of republican governance and the absence of leadership. It wasnt as to how this week. So, senator, we are waiting for the person to speak. We are the perfect person to level off for us here. We want start with the news for cases mourning. That hes gonna offer a motion to vacate the speakership this week. He wants mccarthy removed. You, of course, have not been in the house for a long time, but you do have to work with a chaotic house. How concerned are you that and already kind of wild house could become even more difficult to work with . Well, listen. This is an ongoing disaster for the American People. And republicans are simply not fit to govern, they are not serious people, and, the house of representatives, republican caucus, is going to go through another round of navel gazing in deciding whos gonna lead them, people out there are hurting. We still have crises that we need to tackle. Whether be the Record Number of people dying of overdoses, they continued gun violence crisis, and House Republicans are going to spend the next couple of weeks arguing amongst themselves as to who should be the next speaker. And, well, i am glad that we are not shutting down the federal government. What a low bar for House Republicans that we celebrate the fact that they can just barely keep the lights on with hours to go before a shutdown occurs. Mccarthy, obviously, had to reach out and get democratic votes, as you will have to do 45 days from now. But, as you mentioned, the price here is that he gave him to republican demands to cut ukraine off. And, ultimately, American Security is at risk, if we dont stop funding ukraine again. And that will be one of the big fights that we have to undertake over the next month and a half. It is not enough to just keep the lights on in the federal government, we actually have to live up to our National Security obligations, and one of those is making sure that kyiv does not become a russian city. S not become a rus i want to t theres a lot of risk here. I wanna ask you that with that in mind, theres rumors that Speaker Mccarthy could bring a funding bill for ukraine to the floor, he did, at the last moment, decide to work with democrats to keep the government open. It could be worse, is what im saying. Is their incentive to try to save mccarthy as speaker . So, no matter who is the speaker of the house, no matter who is in charge of the republican caucus, the path to a majority in the house runs through democrats who actually want the federal government to operate and you want to help ukraine, it a handful of more responsible republicans. So thats the problem here, is whether mccarthy is in charge, or somebody else. The Governing Majority in the house are democrats and a minority of republicans. I hope that mccarthy is going to be good on his republic to bring ukraine supplemental funding bill before the house. Because, what we know is that it has the majority in the house, its the commanding, easy majority of members who would support continued funding for ukraine, and my worry is, is that if we wait until the middle or end of november to have this conversation about whether we are still supporting ukraine, it may be too late for ukraine by that point. So, my preference is, in the next few weeks to bring a supplemental funding bill between the senate, than that over to the house, and really Dare Mccarthy to make the, decision to abandon ukraine, even though he has the majority of republicans and democrats will support ukraine. Are you worried at all of this potential threat to his speakership could make him put pause on the idea of bringing up the supplemental funding bill that has been rumored to be considering . I am concerned by the fact that, when it came down to it, the only demands that mccarthy was willing to give into that was coming from his hard right was the demand to abandon ukraine. He stood up to them on their immigration demands, he rejected their Spending Cuts. But the one thing he did give into was this idea that we should end american support for ukraine, which is, lets just be honest, and invitation for putin to march his army straight into the rest of ukraine. It is an abandonment of the entire post world war ii order. So, that does not bode well for the future of ukraine. It just means that those of us who believe this is a worthwhile fighter going have to step up our advocacy efforts in the next several weeks and months. Youve been through, unfortunately, a lot of the spending fights before, Government Shutdowns before, and what do you think the next 45 days look like . It is your expectation, looking at a similar situation in the lead up to thanksgiving . I certainly worried that we are in for a series of Groundhog Days where we are just having the same fight where mccarthy and these Arsonist Republicans bring us up to the precipice of shut down over and over. And, of course, the reality is, is that this is terrible for the American Economy. If these hard right republicans claim to be fiscal conservatives, it is just not fiscally conservative to shut down the government, because we ultimately pay federal employees who were furloughed when they come back to work. But it also cost the American Economy billions of dollars when the federal government shuts down. So, i think the next year and a half are just going to be a series of ongoing disasters in the house of representatives. And, i think we are going to have to try to do a better job of making the case to them that there is nothing fiscally conservative about threatening shutdown are actually going through a shutdown. It is all a reminder that the power voting, and whos here to say that. Just to go to politics for a moment. Rfk junior is out with a new video, strongly hinting he could run for a third party ticket, teasing a, quote, major announcement. We do not know what that means. Do you worry that him running as an independent or third party could hurt President Biden and the democrats . I dont. Frankly, what you see is that portions of the electorate that are interested in Robert Kennedy junior tend to be coming from Donald TrumpsConspiracy Theory base. So if hes running as an independent, i think that may end up hurting donald trump, or the republican nominee, more than joe biden. I also think that the fascination with rfk juniors candidacy was a bit of an elite media fascination. I believe, ultimately, voters know what the stakes are here, and i think Third Party Candidates are not going to be as big a deal come the general election as folks may think. People who support democracy, who support ukraine, who Support Competence in government, are going to understand that the only way to preserve those things is to vote for joe biden. Well, not only one of the fact of a shut down and have been incredibly damaging, but just having that threat and that chaos that goes with it dangling over us, not just dangling over the administration, but dangling over the American People, is not helpful. We are. Going to keep our heads down, keep our heads down and work like the president said. People expect the government to work in thats what we do. We are focused on getting the machinery of government to work from people. A stormy week last week monday in nebraska. What is the risk of Potential Shutdown or a shutdown at that time that could pose to air travel .
