As the tensions continue to escalate on the border with gaza, here on the northern border with lebanon, there is also a heightened state of alert. We are right here on the border, just behind me this is lebanon. You can see the tower here, right on the border between israel and lebanon where just a few hours ago, israels military declared this entire area a closed military zone, extended about two and a half miles into israel. The public is being kept out of this area for their own safety. Israel says that it is also restricting access to gps, basically location based apps on your phone because they are calling it active combat. This follows a fatal attack from lebanon into israel in the past several hours. There have been other cross border clashes. There are real concerns here about a second front opening in this war with hezbollah, the military here now amassing troops, tanks, armored personnel carriers, establishing checkpoints to ensure they have the northern border under control. Its going to be difficult, jonathan. I think unfortunately as necessary because we have seen just a week ago the largest slaughter, the largest massacre of jews since the holocaust. Take that in for one second. With a democracy like israel, what has to contend with. Its a catch 22. Its a horrible predicament that the leaders of hamas of putts the people of israel, and also the people of gaza in. Using the people of gaza as human shields, telling the civilians to stay put even as the hamas leadership cuts in, robinson takes care of their own families. I mean, the Israeli Defense forces are going to try to go in and take out specific commanding control notes. If you look at a terrain map of gaza city, its not a Bulldoze Operation with tanks, as is sometimes portrayed. Its an intelligence driven, specific, targeted ground operation. Its a Combined Arms Operation with ground and air, and naval assets. Unmanned systems, another long range fires, diego specifically after targets that are specifically linked to hamas. I think thats appropriate, we do the same thing. Thats the number for 40,000 of our citizens, if we had hundreds of people held hostage. Jeremy, how much of a challenge will that caused a Tunnel Network before the idf. Not just in terms of destroying, hamas, but also in terms of rescuing the more than 150 hostages believed to be held in gaza . Its extraordinarily difficult, jonathan. Unfortunately, i dont think anyone has a playbook for how to go into hostage rescue. Were talking about this large number of hostages, including not just, you know, well bought, able bodied adults, but children. Were talking about the elderly. Were talking about the disabled. You know, as you mentioned quite rightly, hamas is builtin Underground City of tunnels to store their weapons, store their rockets, use that to move around the gaza strip, smuggle author of their people, and their vehicles, and their weapons. If they have the hostages done in the tunnels, its going to be the most difficult fighting the idf has ever had to encounter. Let me ask you a question, i asked a previous guest in the previous hour, at that, is we know that the Tunnel System exists under gaza. But does the idf have an actual map of that Tunnel System . Or, as the previous guest said, the idf knows where the entrances and exits are, but its a mystery whats in between . My sense is that its an impartial map, yes. I agree with that analysis, which is that several of the entry points are probably wellknown to the idf, but the exact place sane underground of different weapons caches, and different rooms, in different places where you can hold hostages, its probably not fully known to the idf. Thats, jonathan, it complicates things. As you reference in your setup here, the idf is going to have to go in and look for specific hamas leaders, go in and look for specific hamas places, vehicles, weapons catch, as walker factories. The people of gaza are being victimized. I dont think we should sugarcoat. That thats why the idf said leave. Thats why they said we do not want to target you. The people of southern israel, you know, those are hundreds of thousands of people. Theyre also on the move as well. Theyre under rocket fire from hamas even at this hour, as youve reported here on the show. This is affecting civilian populations of both sides of the border. That is a tragedy that lay squarely at the hands of terrorist leaders. So jeremy, the big question is, what next . If israel is successful in destroying hamas, how would you answer that question . Honestly, i think the gaza, at the end of the day, has to become a demilitarized area. It has to have a Protectorate Status with egypt. Egypt controls the gaza strip from the early 1950s until 1967. Since 2005, one gaza has not been occupied by israel, but actually has been self governed, govern first by the Palestinian Authority and then a year later a coup held by hamas of the last 15 years, theyve maintain good relations with egyptian government. The egyptians did not want gaza when israel tried to return Closets Egypt in 1977 as part of the accords. Nevertheless, egypt will have to step up here. Jeremy, the likelihood of iran getting involved, if indeed a Ground Invasion of gaza happens . Im worried about this, jonathan.
