With the israeli gaza strip. Im confident theyre going to act on the rules of war. Theres a standard that democratic countries and institutions will go by, and so im confident that theres going to be an ability for the in gaz have access to medicine and food and water. That was President Joe Biden yesterday on 60 minutes as palestinians in gaza are in dire need of humanitarian aid. Well go live to israel in just a moment. Meanwhile, the United States military is increasing its presence in the middle east amid a threat from iran and another terrorist group. And also ahead, back here at home, an update on the speakers race. Republicans have a vote planned for tomorrow, but it appears that their nominee does not have the support he needs. Well go through that and what could come next on capitol hill. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this monday, october 16th. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day and week with us that is poised to be a busy week. Well begin this morning with the latest out of the israel hamas war. The United States secretary of States Antony Blinken told reporters israel will reopen its border into gaza for aid. The humanitarian crisis in gaza continues to grow. According to the u. N. , hospitals in that settlement are expected to run out of generator fuel within 24 hours, this as the territorys 2. 3 Million People do not have access to clean Running Water and are out of both food and medical supplies. About 600,000 palestinians have been displaced from gaza so far after leaving the northern part of that area in the wake of fridays Evacuation Order issued by israel. However, a leader of hamas said yesterday palestinians will not leave gaza to migrate to egypt. As gaza braces for a potential Israeli Ground assault, Senior Biden Administration officials are warning there are israeli counterparts to show restraint and avoid mass casualties and a humanitarian disaster that could turn the world against the jewish state. Meanwhile the u. S. Is working to get americans in the area home after a deal to evacuate citizens from gaza through egypt fell apart over the weekend. The u. S. State didnt has arranged chartered flights as well as ships bound for cyprus for americans who do wish to leave israel. Meanwhile Secretary Blinken is back in israel. He was there a few days ago. Hes returned to try to prevent the conflict from escalating. The New York Times cites three Senior Officers in the isrli military who told the paper that Israel Isrering a large f h scale invasion of the gaza strip. The times reports is riles goal would be to destroy the leadership of hamas, but the more detailed plan comes at the same time as a new warning is issued by iran. Axios repor that irans Foreign Minister told the u. N. Envoy to the middle east if israel follows through with its anticipated Ground Offensive i iran will have to respond, and now the u. S. Is sending a second Aircraft Carrier strike group to the eastern mediterranean, this one led by the uss dwight eisenhower. With this as the backdrop, worries about the humanitarian crisis in gaza, white house officials are weighing a potential trip by President Biden to israel to show solidarity for that nation. Ive got new reporting this morning. A trip is far from a sure thing. There are significant security concerns, but it is being considered after an invitation from Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu, and if it does happen, the president may go as soon as this week. Well keep you posted. Joining is live from israel, Senior National correspondent for nbc news, jay gray. Jay, give us a sense a as to the latest as the nation prepares for this potential Ground Assault of gaza as well as the egypt border potentially reopening to allow refugees to escape. Reporter yeah. And the key emphasis on potentially at this point, jonathan. Were in an open air market here in the Downtown Area of tel aviv that normally on a monday would be packed. You can see the tension in this city. Sure, some of the markets are open, but there arent many customers. Some have decided not to open at all. Theyve not opening their doors, put out their wears, and theyre not going to see the customers they normally see in this type of situation. We know the people here are anxious to see what happens. They did their job overnight, stopping air attacks, the missiles above the skies. Now there are shifts like whats going to happen at the border crossing, the advancement of the Ground Troops thats been building along the border for quite some time. Jay, give us a sense there as to the situation in gaza. Is there a sense that despite hamas threats is there a feeling some will get to leave, and is there a sense when the Ground Operation will begin . Reporter i would believe overnight there was excitement and belief that, yeah, that was going to happen starting this morning, 9 00 local time. We are now just after noon local time and theres been no movement along the border and no indication there will be. I think theres a lot of frustration, disappointment, not only in getting people out and the Many Americans assembled at the border, but getting supplies in, water in, getting things to the region to help the civilians on the ground there. At this point theres no clear indication. As you talked about, Secretary Blinken back here now in israel and has been working around the clock on the diplomatic side of all this, but at this point and at this time period right now, jonathan, its clear theres been absolutely no movement. With the crowds continuing to gather there, many see it as their only hope for escaping the region, and movement is going to have to happen in one way, either out of gaza or pushing at the border because its becoming way too crowded there. All right. Senior International Correspondent jay gray live from israel. Thank you. Well have more live reporting from the middle east as the day continues. Joining us now retired u. S. Army general twitty. Prior to 2020 he was the deputy commander. Good morning. Lets talk about what an israeli operation into gaza would look like. Theyve been sending signals for a weeks time now. There is belief it could be imminent. If they go in, whats the fighting going to look like . Yeah, good to be with you, jonathan. The fighting is going to be an enormous undertaking. 2. 2 Million People as you talked about. And whenever youre fighting amongst a dense population such as whats in gaza, unfortunately youre going to see noncombats invading casualties as part of this makeup im getting ready to characterize here. And so the israelis will have to go in, Fight Building By building, street by street, alleyway by alleyway, tunnels by tunnels, and it will not be a Home Field Advantage for them. Hamas will have the advantage because its their turf, and so they all understand the lay of the land. And so initially i think the it raleys will have a hard time getting a foothold, but they will certainly dominate once they get in and get an understanding what they need to methodically do entering into gaza city and the tunnels. As i said earlier, theres going to be tremendous casualties on both sides. Hamas, tremendous casualties, israelis, tremendous casualties, and unfortunately within the civilian population. We played President Biden earlier in the show where he believes israel would show some restraint where they to go in. He also said on 60 minutes he believed Israel Occupied gaza would be a big mistake, urged them not to do so. Whats your assessment . Do you agree with the president . I do agree with the president. I dont think you can occupy gaza, because if you occupy gaza, i think youll start to see the arab world start to turn toward israel, and we dont want that to happen. We dont want to create further instability in the region, so the israelis need to go in, hit their intended targets, ensure that hamas doesnt have the ability to fire miss aisles or conduct the operations they conducted this past week, and once they do that, get the place stabilized, then i think they need to leave and ensure that theres some type of structure there that can handle the humanitarian situation that theyre about to endure as well before they depart. Wed have to see the response from iran and hezbollah as well. Retired army u. S. General stephen twitty. We really appreciate it. Well have much more as Way Too Early continues. The faceoff between donald trump and his former Attorney Michael Cohen has now been delayed. Former President Trump was expected to attend cohens 250 million Civil Fraud Trial against him as cohen took the stand, but that testimony has now been delayed because of an unspecified healthrelated issue. Cohen told nbc news he will reschedule. Its unclear if trump will still attend the trial this week. Hes scheduled to be in new york in the coming days for a deposition in a separate case. Meanwhile the judge overseeing trumps federal election disruption case in washington will hold a hearing today on a petition for some sort of gag order. The Washington Post is reporting that the prosecutors requested the gag. They worry that the former president s inflammatory comments could prejudice potential jurors or intimidate witnesses. Trumps team for their part has argued that any sort of gag order would violate the former president s Constitutional Rights to Freedom Of Speech particularly as he is running for office again. The judge could issue a ruling as early as today. Elsewhere, hollywood is mourning the loss of beloved actress Suzanne Somers.
