The Hawk Eye At the corner of Sixth and Jefferson streets, the statue celebrating Nancy Neafie watches over historical downtown Burlington. The bronze statue stands 7 feet tall, wearing an Oriental-style scholar's robe, its left hand holding a book as if saluting the knowledge contained on its pages — a fitting tribute to the scholar and teacher who served as Burlington's first and only female mayor. "She was a very empowered female," Sarah Hazell said from the office of Hazell Agencies-Insurance, where she works alongside several family members, including her father, Scott Hazell, and niece, Laura Hazell. "I wouldn't say strong, I would say empowered, because to me, empowerment embodies strength, too, and knowledge, and she definitely represented both of those things. And I also think that she was someone who, she really triumphed the female aspect of women's rights."
