The Canadian and Saskatchewan governments should pay more attention to environmental concerns as they address the dispute that threatens to shut down the Line 5 oil pipeline.

Line 5 runs from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario, and carries oil produced in Saskatchewan and Alberta to Ontario, Quebec and U.S. markets. The Saskatchewan, Alberta and Canadian governments are lobbying to keep the pipeline open, which is very much in Saskatchewan’s economic interests. However, they are weakening their case by paying insufficient attention to legitimate safety issues that need resolution.
