Other Voices: What to do about Gettysburg’s Confederate monuments

I live half an hour from the Gettysburg battlefield and go there often, normally seeking the less-visited parts of the field at times when there are few other visitors, reaching for the deep spirit of the place undistracted. Recently, though, these moments of introspection have become even more poignant as America enters another phase of its long struggle for racial justice.
As a South Carolinian, I sometimes walk Seminary Ridge, which formed much of the Confederate line at the peak of the fight. While the other side of the field where the U.S. forces formed their lines — places like Little Round Top and the “copse of trees” that the great Confederate charge targeted on the battle’s third day — represent the fragile national unity that was at stake at Gettysburg; the Confederate battle positions symbolize America’s unfinished nature, particularly its pursuit of racial justice.
