Flat Black Art Supply owner Pete Salcido isn't just selling art supplies at Westfield Palm Desert. He's changing the aesthetic of Coachella Valley cities by commissioning public art pieces from renowned Southern California artists and bringing them to the desert. The 39-year-old is behind many of the well-known murals that have recently popped up in Palm Springs, including a pair by Los Angeles artist MisterAlek: one depicts inaugural poet Amanda Gorman at the downtown "Art Pit," while another on North Palm Canyon Drive pays homage to George Floyd, a Black man who was murdered by a former Minneapolis police officer.
