Patrick Dykstra attended a small high school near Topeka. He now explores oceans on television, searching for whales.

At 16, Patrick Dykstra was trying to decide what he wanted to be when he grew up.
Dykstra, who was living in Keene — a small, unincorporated town about 30 miles southwest of Topeka — decided to volunteer for Sen. Pat Roberts' 1996 campaign.
As a thank you, Roberts' campaign extended an internship in Washington, D.C., to Dykstra. Because he was a teenager, he couldn't attend many of the events that were serving alcohol.
Instead, Dykstra explored the Smithsonian museums. It was at the natural history museum that his life's path ultimately changed. As he turned a corner in the museum, the Sea of Life exhibit came into view.
