Time flies, and so just over a month has already passed since I raised my right hand as Vice President Kamala Harris swore me into my new job as secretary of transportation. As I recited the oath, I couldnât help but think of the first time I was sworn in to public office, nearly a decade ago, launching my first term as mayor of South Bend. This time was very different, of course. We were at the White House and not the Great Hall of the Century Center, and now my husband Chasten was at my side, a reminder of what has changed in our country as well as in my own life in the years since I first took the oath in South Bend in 2012.
