SAN DIEGO — Investigators have arrested a driver suspected of fleeing after hitting and severely injuring a pedestrian earlier this month during an “illegal street drifting contest,” authorities said Tuesday. The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 as the driver was doing “doughnuts” near a large crowd at Carroll Canyon Road and Scranton Road, according to San Diego police traffic Sgt. Victoria Houseman. Police said the 25-year-old victim was standing with the crowd watching the car spin when it swerved into a wide turn. Onlookers moved to avoid being hit, but the woman was unable to get out of the way, Officer Robert Heims said.
