BARTOW — An advertisement for a teacher job fair with Polk County Public Schools was removed from the district’s Facebook page this week after teachers complained it was inaccurate and insensitive. “Have a bachelor’s degree and looking for a job starting out at $45,172? OH, and you only work 10 months out of the year?” the ad read. “Become a teacher!” Veteran teachers read it and were baffled by its air of easiness around a profession for which they went to college, trained, were certified and are required to take professional development courses throughout their careers. “What this desperate ad doesn't say is that even with a bachelor's degree, you need to satisfy requirements, like passing a subject area test, to obtain your temporary teaching certificate,” said Stephanie Yocum, president of the Polk Education Association teachers’ union. “Without that temporary certificate, Polk County Public Schools will pay you as a provisional substitute, which puts you making about 1/3 of that touted $45,172 for doing the same job as a teacher with none of the protections provided by the teacher contract. It also doesn't say that if you bring any actual teaching experience, you'll most likely be making peanuts more than a brand-new teacher because the Florida Legislature as a whole and this Governor hates public schools.”
