By The News staff Three people escaped serious injury when a pilot made an emergency landing in a wheat field near the Hutchinson Municipal Airport on Saturday. The crash landing occurred shortly after the start of the airport’s semi-annual Prairie Skies fly-in and open house. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that pilot Dallas Arthur Hewett, 63, of Wichita, was taking off from the airport just before 9:30 a.m. in a 1962 Beech 23 when the single-engine aircraft had a power failure and the engine stalled out. Hewett attempted to land in a nearby wheat field, south of the airport off Fourth Avenue, but made a hard landing, damaging the plane.
