The municipality of Quinte West has decided that they will once again celebrate Pride Month in June 2021. They will also have the pride flag flying at City Hall through out the month.
This comes at the request of the Bay of Quinte Regional Marketing Board. There is also the possibility of city staff painting rainbow colored sidewalks as part of the celebration, but that will be discussed at the councils next regular meeting on June 3.
Pride celebrations are held around North America and the world. These celebrations happen in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots that took place in New York in June 1969. Members of the community were subject to constant police harassment and raids, and and one such incident outside a business called the Stonewall Inn lead to people fighting back. The first Pride Parade took place in New York in 1970, a year after the Stonewall Riot. Since then, members of the LGBTQ2-Plus community have continued the tradition and still fight for equal rights in many places.
