R.I.P. Canadian Artist, Engineer and Producer Bob Lanois

Published Apr 20, 2021Bob Lanois — the Canadian artist, musician, engineer and producer who co-founded Hamilton's Grant Avenue Studio — has died. Lanois passed away yesterday evening (April 19), though a cause of death was not revealed. He was 73.
Hamilton Spectator that his friend and collaborator passed away "around dinner time." Wilson told the paper that "Hamilton has lost a jewel."
Bob and Daniel Lanois began recording and engineering music in the laundry room of their mother's home in Ancaster, ON. Naming the basement studio MSR (Master Sound Recordings), the two soon began holding sessions at a flat rate of $60, producing artists and local radio jingles. As their popularity grew locally, the brothers continued to build out the studio with gear they both purchased and built themselves.
