Spending time with Rachel Whiteread’s work changes how you see the built environment. You become more aware of breaks and border points in the fabric of the city: who’s locking themselves into spaces and who’s barricaded out. Stepping out of the grand Gagosian gallery and picking my way through the streets of Mayfair after our interview, I keep noticing the kinds of transient structures that catch Whiteread’s eye as she too walks around the city.
