Defense attorney Anthony Iacullo highlighted Chalet's past service as a volunteer firefighter and said he always went "above and beyond" as a law enforcement officer. "He has accepted responsibility, has time spent incarcerated and people supporting him, standing by him, (which will) make him amendable to probation," Iacullo said. "It is something he has learned from, something not ever to be repeated and something Elie takes very, very seriously." Tia Manochio, an assistant prosecutor, said she was amendable to probation based upon Chalet's lack of criminal history, and she said Chalet's mother-in-law approved of the plea deal . Despite the deal, Manochio said she did not take the offense lightly, stating that the victim suffered emotional harm. She was displaced from her home and is "essentially no longer part of her daughter's life because her daughter is currently married to the defendant."
