Ready to Launch: New Rail Ferries for CG Railway Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor CG Railway’s two new 590-foot-long ferries (pictured) will each be able to carry 135 railcars, up from 115 railcars on the existing ferries, with an expected top speed of 14 knots, up from seven knots. Two new rail ferries will enter Gulf of Mexico service this year for CG Railway (GCR), a joint venture between subsidiaries of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) and SEACOR Holdings Inc. The short line is replacing its existing two vessels that transport 10,000 annual carloads of diversified commodities from Mobile, Ala., to Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. CGR has direct interchange in the U.S. with G&W subsidiary Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway, CN, CSX, Norfolk Southern and Alabama State Port Authority’s Terminal Railway (with connections to BNSF, Kansas City Southern, Union Pacific and Mississippi Export Railroad), and in Mexico with Ferrosur (with connections to FCCM/FIT, Ferromex, TFVM and Kansas City Southern de México).
