Report reveals net zero emission target possible for Southla

Report reveals net zero emission target possible for Southland by 2050

Mitigating options in the report fall under technology, industry, agriculture and land use.
Agriculture currently emits 69 per cent of Southland’s total overall emissions, and has the largest changes to make in order to hit targets, according to the report.
It’s recommended that a 10 per cent stock reduction in dairy cattle, beef cattle and sheep be applied linearly from 2035 to 2050. Selective breeding is recommended to be adopted for 30 per cent of cattle and 80 per cent of sheep by 2050 for animals that exhibit low residual methane production.
About 4.1 per cent of farmland currently used for livestock will need to be converted to crops and horticulture between 2020 and 2050 to meet targets.
