Activist photos reignite winter grazing debate in Southland

He is adamant the practise of intensive winter grazing needs to end now, for environmental and animal welfare reasons.
But farmers are fighting back just as strongly, and among the comments his post attracted were some who questioned if his photos have been edited, that it didn’t show some context, and the timing was questioned – it was taken right after a storm dumped snow and rain on Southland.
Some farmers commenting on the facebook posts say Reid is selectively taking photos to make winter grazing look bad.
Reid is adamant his photos have not been edited nor has he taken photos that are misleading the public. ....

Report reveals net zero emission target possible for Southland by 2050

Mitigating options in the report fall under technology, industry, agriculture and land use.
Agriculture currently emits 69 per cent of Southland’s total overall emissions, and has the largest changes to make in order to hit targets, according to the report.
It’s recommended that a 10 per cent stock reduction in dairy cattle, beef cattle and sheep be applied linearly from 2035 to 2050. Selective breeding is recommended to be adopted for 30 per cent of cattle and 80 per cent of sheep by 2050 for animals that exhibit low residual methane production.
About 4.1 per cent of farmland currently used for livestock will need to be converted to crops and horticulture between 2020 and 2050 to meet targets. ....

Grazing support needed for flood-affected Canterbury livestock

Federated Farmers Southland senior vice president Bernadette Hunt said while they strongly encouraged anybody with available grazing to take up the MPI’s call, they must also consider their own needs throughout the winter.
“It’s a great thing to do if people do have grazing available,” Hunt said, but farmers must make sure they’re “not leaving themselves short”.
“We had a request from north Canterbury even before the floods, so we know they’re doing it tough,” she said.
The current worker shortage in the agriculture sector shouldn’t be a factor in Southland’s ability to assist in flood recovery. Instead, it would primarily be dependent on the feed farmer’s already had on hand, she said. ....
