Review: San Diego Musical Theatre's 'Jukebox Hero' concert has a playful musical theme

For its latest fundraising concert, San Diego Musical Theatre has taken 13 songs from Broadway jukebox musicals and created its own — a brief, playful and lightly scripted collection of songs called “Jukebox Hero.”
For those not familiar with the term “jukebox musical,” it’s a show where a script and characters are written to fit the lyrics of a composer’s most famous songs. One of the most successful of this Broadway genre is ABBA’s “Mamma Mia!,” which provided the loose inspiration for SDMT’s “Jukebox Hero.”
As in “Mamma Mia!,” the lead character of “Jukebox Hero” is a 40-something single woman who runs a tavern (in this case, a cabaret called Jukebox) and is wistful about the lost glory days in her 20s. The minimalist script was written by SDMT managing director Neil Dale, who also directs the entertaining 42-minute show and is part of the seven-member cast.
