Slave trade as we start. Watching the whole. List going on a cd. Player so you can see. Joyce. Grays. Slaves systemic deception. But shes. Still. Going to watch. Wow wow wow this is really bad when you see these numbers of this many people youre talking for you know 4xw1c5xw you know 1000000000 d dollar industry this is a massive industry and its only getting worse absolutely and i think that contextually its very important to note that this isnt just something when people think of sex trafficking they always think of issues abroad this is something that is actually going on right here in the United States and in fact a lot of our major cities are ports and hubs of entry for for access to a lot of these very young girls starting in some cases as young as 11 or 12 youre exactly right in fact at the the average age right now for young for young woman sold for sex is about 13 years old as average when you add it all ages to give us the media thats frightening and tragic thats a child and we should question when when young girls go missing particularly young girls of color because they dont get the same News Coverage they dont get the same the same amount of focus and resources thrown to actually finding them when these young girls are going missing across the country in large part of the industry that they are being driven into is the sexual. You know its interesting because national the National Center for missing and exploited children which i believe was created back in the eightys if im not mistaken they compiled the f. B. I. Data on their own and of the nearly 24000 runaways that reported that was reported to the southern ships 2019 out of 24001 in 6 were likely victims of child sex trafficking one in 6 and all of those of that one in 688 percent were in the care of social services when they went missing thats a big problem in this country when you have the government run you know that you like what the government designed to hopefully help children is now a pipeline into slavery and thats the scary part of this because a lot of these young women have been women whove gone through the foster care system or women whove been have been removed from the homes of their parents either because their parents were incarcerated they werent able to take care of them their Mental Health issues they were Substance Abuse issues and now theyre entering into it in underworld where in many cases these kids will never come back and when they in in the rare cases where they do they are never the same they have been passed along through through the sex trafficking industry through several different people they have been documentaries about sometimes them having to sleep with 20 people a day like this is a very tragic thing for a lot of these young girls and then theyre you know theyre pumped with drugs and all these other things to perform before these you know very elderly in some cases min and its very sad because those far we have not seen the amount of attention nationally that i think that this type of issue deserves no no we have and then there are but then the other thing that i brought up to that i thought was interesting is we talk you know this extreme form of Human Trafficking and that and that needs to be dealt with right away thats number one but theres also this other idea of slavery in the 21st century thats the slave to debt thats frightening to me i mean one in 5 americans now work in whats called no under no complete clauses meaning that they only can work for the business the paying them you know you got how many people in the student you know mention these numbers earlier the debt slow. Absolutely and the not compete clause used to only be one that was utilized very strongly in the private sector today were seeing non compete clauses actually come across Nonprofit Sector and public sectors as well in addition to that there are limits that are associated with jobs you can get after you leave that position so i think that thats a very important thing to bring up because in the context of. Being a slave today we have to remember that that is a very that is a structural issue that a lot of people are talking about but its also one in which young people specifically those who are recent grads sign into these contracts for employment honestly because there isnt a ton of jobs out there that are going to be able to provide them Health Insurance coverage and these other things that they need but then there are cameras strapped to not being able to go anyplace else. Regardless of how theyre being treated on that job if theyre not getting paid a wage that is that is equivalent to their male counterparts beating their female or if theyre racial issues and tensions there theres so many things that keep them locked in and i think that you know bringing something up like this is extremely important especially in this day and age where were seeing more and more businesses utilize this as a means to keeping their keeping their employees outside of taking on any other type of work yeah which is which is sad because look if you want to do that in the old days it was just pay them more exactly you know that was in your orders more money and you keep the best talent that way but no you dont see that no no no we want you sign this and you want your site and thats not completely wrong its crazy and that is a server too and we all know that you know study after study has shown that the majority of millennial and people outside of the millennial i age group have to work beside hustles if you will just to be able to make ends meet so i think that any any Employment Opportunity that limits what you can do outside of that is going to be problematic because you never know what types of debt these these folks are in a lot of it is Student Loan Debt some is hospital bills and other and other things many young people are taking care of taking care of elderly people theyre taking care of younger sibs. They have responsibilities that are beyond their years in many senses so maybe that one job is not providing them enough to be able to take care of everything including the rising housing costs group point very important issue bird reports. For all the details of criminal Justice Reform reentry and rehabilitation americas that Prison Industrial Complex still finds ways to dehumanise and limit opportunity for those in custody book clubs and access to prison libraries are commonly used assets for inmates books are often donated from Public Libraries nonprofits and private entities but places like California State Prison in sacramento are restricting their use from banning specific titles and genres of books many of which are American Plastics to charging inmates who read them this charging inmates as they read these Books Research points to the importance of reading and developing empathy reducing stress and anxiety finding a source of motivation and the development and sharpening of analytical skills all things everyone could use but especially important for those cut off from the rest of the world and distance from their loved ones the cry for more books is coming from inmates themselves who write letters pleading for volunteer groups to donate books seems like an easy task but wardens often circumvent these very small requests prison systems argue that contraband concerns are one of the reasons for ratcheting up restrictions on what gets into prison libraries for growing prison sensor has raised concerns from prison advocacy groups here to tell us more about book bans in americas prisons is watching the hawks on social media producer and journalist devin springer. Always a pleasure having you on the show thank you very much definitely so we know that these restrictions exists across the country in prisons but they dont exist at the same level so in some cases were seeing most of our modern books be restricted specifically those that are that question criminal justice and theres some of them as it stands and but beyond that were also seeing some American Classics beyond that restricted list things that are in the American Literary canon and it seems like prisons are deciding that they want to restrict willy nilly different types of books is there something that or is there a mechanism around that is uniform why are they restricting some books and not at me and thats a good question with a complex sort of multilayered answer so essentially books in prisons are state regulated to an extent but in reality each prison when it comes to state and federal facilities tend to create their own list of books that are not allowed and so when we talk about specific titles you can even go online at a lot of state and federal facilities and find a list of books and like you said its usually like the new jim crow by Michelle Alexander are prisons obsolete by angela davis these are the kind of books that youll find on those a list including some very harmless books like drawing 101. 00 and yoga but essentially theres no sort of National Standard for books in prisons that prisons must follow so you can have one more than one person who shrugs and says i dont care which in the us we dont have that kind of word and over and then others you can have the ones that say youre only read and i dont know the bible and related concepts. Of thing you know means you brought up the idea that theyre charging these inmates now to read basically every 0. 03 a minute because they usually have the books on some kind of one of those kind of. Split up if you want to read whos profiting from movies like this because to me this is absolutely despicable you go charge someone to read a book while theyre in jail yeah that is a great question so essentially about a year ago to 2 years ago they started transitioning to using tablets and many prisons and jails as well the tablets can be used. Video calls so and some facilities are actually eliminating family like visits and switching to video chats which you can imagine that Human Interaction is really great for Mental Health for incarcerated persons theres a lot of Health Concerns that come with that but part of that is also getting rid of prison libraries and transferring them on to these tablet devices where theyre actually using online databases now that are regulated by the prison so the people profiting from it are those who make the tablets who are doing these multimillion dollar contracts with prison facilities in this specific instance in West Virginia its global telling. Are making millions of dollars they made 9000000. 00 on video visits alone and 2018 thats just in video visits so you can imagine if theyre charging 0. 03 a minute to read a book if you read a book for 11 hours thats almost 20. 00 but if youre only making 0. 20 an hour working then youre going to spend all your money just to read 1. 00 book no thats ridiculous and if the goal is to decrease recidivism its to rehabilitate and we know what the value of reading what the value of being able to have that escape actually is for people who dont have regular Human Interaction but also for those of us who do how is this book restriction going to help people with life post incarceration well its essentially not i mean we saw in the mid eightys they started to get rid of g. D. In College Programs and they started to get rid of extracurriculars like frivolous things like yoga classes and even now in some states theyve even cracked down on like religious events such as sunday services right so this is sort of in that directory and its not going to help them at all the numbers show that prisoners who read more books have a lower chance of reentering a prison or jail and this is actually does not even have to be scientific this is common sense right if you allow someone to read and educate themselves while theyre in a confined space theyre just gaining knowledge they have nothing else to do with their time most of the time and so for do labor for almost no money right remember some of the. The more people read the smarter they get the more independent they get the more they think for themselves the more they realize that theyve got in the wrong with a stick and should be exactly that you know they want to keep people in idiotic because there is there to control exactly and remember when it comes to slavery in the us for example one of the 1st laws that came about around slavery is that they were not allowed to read and write so i think this is an irony exactly as in a very similar vein ill say that it always great work thank you so much for coming on today always a pleasure.
