Thinking as there seems to be a push from the right and for many in the economic sector to do just that but theres also another if not equal push from the other side that says opening the economy would be both dangerous and irresponsible and that is the thinking of many in the Public Health sector also many on the left all right so whos right. Were going to bring you a debate on this matter but before we do so i want to share with you some numbers that might help ok so as far as the economy goes 22000000 americans have lost their jobs as of this morning that brings the Unemployment Rate to 15 percent and according to economists it could reach 20 percent if present trends continue by the end of the year in a word the situation is dismal economically now lets look at lethality because this is really an important conversation as well the death rate death rate from the coronavirus so far is at most about 1000. 00 per day in the United States thats extrapolating that so far 28000. 00 people have died and this has been going on for a month that right. Let me at let me give you another number now what is the normal death rate in the United States its about 8000. 00 per day so 1000. 00 person versus 8000. 00 per day one is the coronavirus deaths the other one is normal death so heres another question who is the coronavirus killing the most foundational study which is the china study. Concludes that 15 percent of the people who are in their eightys follow me here 15 percent of people who are in their eightys and contract the disease will die 15 percent of people who are in their eightys and get corona virus will die 15 percent while only one percent of those who come down with it when theyre in their fiftys will die and if youre under 40 your odds are really pretty minimal about point 2 percent. So numbers wise and comparatively speaking of ours does not seem as lethal as maybe some expected however the number of those sick and dying is happening fast and in a shorter period of time too fast for the health care infrastructure. That is simply unable to handle it without being overwhelmed meaning many of those. Who die could die because our nation. Is not able to give them proper care and thats an important point to take into consideration as well no matter what the numbers are look this is not an easy call so heres what were going to do were going to debate it were going to debate it here on the news of rick sanchez where we believe it is time to do news again. All right here we go the list of the questions we think you should be asking tomorrow should the economy be opened sooner than later and how what is the World Health Organization how did it suddenly become so darn controversial and did a c. N. N. Anchor disturb a hornets nest with comments about his job and his network were going to take that on to this could be interesting all this week by the way as you well know going to be bringing you special coronavirus coverage with updates from all over the world for everything you need to know to protect yourself and your family we call it tracking coronavirus ok. We really are folks on the cusp of a great debate that will likely be taking place all over the world that goes Something Like this better to open the economy even if it causes health care hardships and even deaths that it would be to continue a lockdown that is destroying businesses and in many case lives or the congress 2 ways to look at this right now that thats how were going to set the table and look ive got to tell you sound arguments on both sides so were bringing 2 of the smartest people we know to take this on joining us now here is the close to of watching the hearts of mischa cross and from the other side of the spectrum on this is not dry and conservative commentator former writer for president george w. Bush all right team lets get started ameesha ladies 1st tell us what you think should be done what do you believe what is your opinion regarding what the president should do tonight open or not open the economy. Generally not a lot and we are still at a stage where were watching certain states and localities have takes in coronavirus cases we just saw was it yesterday tennessee decided that they were going to allow all of their residents to be tested we still have enough has a bailable to know who has coronavirus and who does not there are individuals who are consistently being turned away at the doors of hospitals because as you mentioned earlier that capacity just is not there and i think that right now would be a little to suit social distancing we know has flattened the curb in some cases were even seeing some of those reductions in new york but it means that if we are to open things too soon we run the risk of there being greater infections there being reinfection things that weve already seen and noted from several cases in china multiple the economy matters im not going to put it above human lives master ryan your take sir. I mean 1st of all rick those statistics about 22000000 unemployed in the 1st 4 weeks i dont even think thats the real number i think its much higher if you were to have every unemployed person actually fire in the climb so i think were above 15 percent at this point just in 4 weeks the thing that is has been of some concern to be read as weve taken a one size fits all if you look at the real numbers as of today 70 percent of the deaths from corona virus have taken place in 5 States New York new jersey massachusetts michigan and louisiana 45 of those states cover the rest of the deaths and if you look at some of those wrecking really dig down youre looking at North CarolinaSouth Carolina they dont even have 200 deaths apiece you look at tennessee with 200 s. You look at utah with 20 deaths and you start to realize that you could probably reopen in a responsible way and i want to stress this rick i think a responsible way where you have certain things people have to wear masks you take temperatures if you have a temperature you stay home if youre going into a restaurant or a business there are temperature checks which you start to reopen and rick the other point that you made if you really start to look at the numbers as we have now had a little bit of time to collect data on this if youre under the age 65 and you know this is from john hyland night as professor of medicine at stanford you realize that you are more likely to die from a fatal car accident then you are from coronavirus were looking at this and going we have to reopen the economy were going to see more deaths from suicides and bankruptcy how about that i mean sure the numbers just dont add up to what we were told would happen in fact right now if you look at it the death toll in the United States is Something Like 8000. 00 per day only a 1000 people are dying and i say only because they may be included in that 8000. 00 of the coronavirus is it starting to look like maybe its not as bad as we were told it would be. You know its looking like social distancing its working its looking like the governors who took matters into their own hands and actually made those alerts and made those recognitions the mayor im originally from chicago shes doing a great job in making sure that people are social distancing shes actually were trolling the streets to make sure that people are home i think that at the local level there are places that could possibly open up before everywhere else doesnt but i do have a problem with from a federal perspective the president United States and technically cannot tell him to open any way and never actually issue a federal stay at home order is trying to make this decision i think that governors are much more and a better place to know as well as cities to know 2 when it is a better time to open based on information they have met job. No i absolutely agree youre seeing governor out of texas youre seeing governor doozy of arizona there are real rumblings right that theyre thinking of opening that week of may 4th or maybe sooner because youre right i mean this is an issue of federalism and to his credit even despite some of the rhetoric over the last couple days trump has really let the governors make some of these decisions i think really what hes gone going to come down to despite some of his statements is going and saying to these governors hey listen wed like to incentivize if you think its the responsible thing to do to reopen your economy and reopened for business wed like to be of help at the same time and he said this rick if there are governors who think its not the right time and it could be new york and new jersey who are going to lag a little bit behind some of these other states you take your time well be of support to you ive got to tell you rick the other thing that has to happen congress had better get its act together and come together and put some more money in for Small Businesses or were going to have continued fallout from Small Businesses again specifically on the payroll Protection Plan because this is really damaging the Small Businesses who provide nearly half of the private sector jobs weve got to get out Fast Congress get its act together reopen the economy in a very responsible way i let me try to get were about 45 seconds left i want to get some from both of you guys on me show me to start with you what would be your drop dead date for finally turning this thing around and opening the economy in some way. That is a tough question again i think that it boils down to one state specifically if i was to make one from a National Perspective i would say i would definitely want to see everything open by by june ok do you. Think 90 percent of the country can open by monday may 4th rick and i think that would be a responsible approach my thanks to both of you great conversation youre both wonderful gas i thought that was a really smart debate once again thanks to both of you for being with us meanwhile there has been much about the World Health Organization im sure youve heard it yourself lately it has been mostly critical even president. Against the this week as he describes it as being in favor of china what is the w. H. O. Why is it there and what about it makes it so suddenly so controversial heres our us correspondent Michelle Greene to explain that to watch. The World Health Organization was founded in 1988 its the u. N. Agency responsible for international Public Health present trumps recent decision to halt funding to the w. H. O. Has sparked a debate on whether or not the organization is biased towards china the w. H. O. Like any Organization Needs money and china does contribute money to its budget but china is only the 16th largest contributor to the w. H. O. Budget a significant portion of the money comes from nongovernment entities for example after the United States government the largest funder of the w. H. O. Is the bill and Melinda Gates foundation the largest private foundation on earth the next top private donor is the Global Alliance for vaccines which the Gates Foundation helped set up and which is reliant on Gates Foundation funding to this day turn on pretty much any news program these days and youll find bill gates whose philanthropy has made himself an expert in Infectious Diseases were gates is seen as a voice to listen to because in 2015 he gave a ted talk warning that the world was unprepared for the next outbreak but its possible that the priorities of the Gates Foundation arent the same as the objective progression of Global Health oh you are showing us how. Nations. And the other have comes from industry the single biggest. After the United States the single biggest contributor is. The bill in the foundation. Which has a very close relationship to ours. And has goals that are almost lined with free so why is the united nation. The World Health Organization forced to rely on a private organization for such a significant portion of its funding according to Global Health watch the fundamental challenge at play here is a chronic Funding Crisis a lack of public funding has made the w. H. O. Turn to private sources and while in the early period after the organizations formation required contributions from u. N. Member states where the majority of its budget by 20162017 that number had fallen to 20 percent even the former w. H. O. Director general has noted in the past that her budget is driven by what she calls donor interests the w. H. O. Needs money and it gets it where it can including from private organizations but its only once donor control is broken that a Global Institution like the w. H. O. Conserve its intended purpose for the news of rick sanchez Michele Greenstein are interesting like everybody else they need money they keep running thanks so much to show good stuff you want your money. On your favorite provider for free on the portable t. V. Were so glad youre there were going to be right. A reflection of reality. In a world transformed. What will make you feel safe. So what weve got to do is identify the threats that we have its crazy. Let it be an arms race. Very dramatic to follow only. I dont see how that strategy will be successful very critical time to sit down and talk. Hey welcome back everybody im rick sanchez a c. N. N. Anchor this week made a comment on the radio about his job and his network that seemed highly critical here is what chris cuomo said during his radio show i dont want to spend my time doing things that i dont think are valuable enough to me personally i dont value indulging irrationality and hyper partisanship i dont like what i do professionally i dont think its worth my time comments from chris cuomo on his serious show on the. Radio the next day when the issue became very very public he came out saying that he actually loves his job he loves what he does and he loves working at c. N. N. To discuss this and other Matters Regarding journalism we have 2 Award Winning journalist chris hedges a Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist New York Times reporter and host of on contact right here in r t america and Ruben Navarrette nominated for a policy writes for the Washington Post group and is an r t contributor my thanks to both of you gentlemen for joining us. Chris get us started what was your take on these comments that have made so much news and gotten so much buzz from interestingly enough the brother of the governor of new york who is suffering from coronavirus but still doing his shows from his home. Well hes protesting how new c. N. N. Is a good example has become in essence a version of sunday n. F. L. Countdown you know look at shows like crossfire or any of these shows that are designed exactly the same way you have an anchor on one side yes usually 4 commentators 2 from one team the Democratic Team 2 from the other team. The graphics are behind you keeping score so you can root for whatever team you want there is of course no gray area your whole political identity can bleed in one of the other and you never resolve anything and thats you know Reality Television its not news and that although hes back a little pretty quickly look these people are paid millions of dollars i was a newspaper reporter for many years none of us in the New York Times were making that kind of money because they are in essence celebrities and he at least had a kind of a moment of honesty at what he did and how frustrating it is if you actually care about news. Ruben navarette pick it up for us. That chris cuomo is in a very bad spot at the moment because he has coronavirus and he found out in the announcement show yesterday that his wife has been infected as well and he says that was the one thing he was afraid of spreading into his family members and it took this really near death experience in his mind hes lost you know 1013 pounds over 2 weeks hes not hes not done well its been hard on him to make him see what many of us his record have recognized to be the truth and that is that Cable Television primetime viewing across the board on all the networks blue and red its a sewer its a place where as chris said you go in theres no room for nuance no black its everythings black and white theres no gray and most of the time people are trying to throw red meat to their base so if youre on tucker show on the right youre throwing red meat to the base youre not telling the whole story if youre on don lemon show on the left youre throwing red needs of the Democratic Base red meat at them and certainly not telling them the whole story and so a chris cuomo said is what many of us are thinking which is it would be great if these folks just gave us news and information that would help us keep our family safe and out of harms way and not play gotcha politics and not be so snarky and not do what theyre doing it sounds like what you all are saying is that our journalism at least at the Network Level is almost as infested a
