Now i want to start today by trying to answer the questions that you may have about this particular illness 1st yes yes the c. D. C. Is officially linking it to covert 19 but that link is still not fully understood you see its called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome and i want to take you through how it was discovered in just a minute but before i do that i need to tell you that this syndrome in children is being compared to yet another childhood condition and that one is called kawasaki disease which shares some of the same symptoms its not the same disease but they share some of the symptoms and thought thats an important point lets do this lets go over to the wall because i want to show you what some of these symptoms are ok number one if your child presents with a fever that lasts for more than 24 hours if your child has a die. Nominal pain diarrhea or vomiting if they have a rash of he or she has a rash or a skin color ration thats different if they have trouble breathing thats another one number 4 number 5 is your child seems confused or overly sleepy see these are different from some of the symptoms that weve told you about with copd 19 right so now let me tell you how this whole thing started this is going to take you back to april 27th on april 27th doctors in the u. K. Started noticing this bizarre inflammatory disease that was affecting children who had also presented with coded 19 so they sent an alert out all over the world to all the other epidemiologist all the other doctors and all the other big Childrens Hospitals and it got picked up in new york by the new York City Health department who that who then said hey we have cases that sound like what you guys are reporting as well so now its in the United States let me take you now to may 2nd may 2nd boston Childrens Hospital they convene a teleconference that was joined by doctors from all over the world to share notes and ask each other what are you finding what are you finding this included experts pediatric intensive care pediatric cardiology pediatric rheumatology Infectious Disease guys and gals and experts in kawasaki disease and after they all sat there for hours sharing notes about what they were finding what they concluded is that this syndrome in children is distinct from other illnesses. It seems to present in children that were exposed to covert 900. 00 but it remains still extremely rare now after kawasaki because this is the other part of the story which gets all i know a little confusing as i was doing my research i was having a tough time trying to understand this. Were hearing now from the u. K. Cow was ocky Disease Foundation its an organization thats been there forever right and theyve been studying callus a disease has caught his eye disease is not new ok theyre putting out a statement to let parents know that although this disease presents like saki theyre not seeing a direct tie between coated 19 and callous a disease itself in fact they put out these numbers they say that of 11000000 children in the u. K. Including many who have been exposed to covert 19 only 20 so far have tested positive for callous and they also go on to say and this is encouraging they go on to say that thats down from what they usually have a case load of college saki in a year like this one in the past so thats good news right but he heres the question is the sin is the syndrome an offshoot of kawasaki or is it an offshoot of covert 19 or is it both or neither of these are the questions that we need to ask to find out if this disease is going to become more prevalent and many of these questions remain unanswered but we think its important to keep asking and reporting to you what we know so far even if it is incomplete because we hear on the news rick sanchez believe. It really is time to do news again. What do we know or need to know about how 5 cold it affects children our main topic today through the death toll trends really substantiate Opening Stores and restaurants will green and profit get in the way of the development of covert vaccine once again and case you didnt hear the news the 1st case of a child dying from dallas lucky disease has occurred and has been confirmed in france today a little more the boy who tested positive for corona virus received treatment at the hospital for 7 days d and then he died saturday this 9 year old went into cardiac arrest this is brand new information and apparently they were able to get him out of it he wasnt able to pull through. With more now from new york on what we know and dont know about this rare illness the latest there as told by our correspondent trying to each of us. The c. D. C. Officially issuing a Health Advisory to thousands of doctors across the country warning to look out for a troubling new syndrome that may be associated with copd in 1000 mostly commonly were seeing kids present with high fever its been going on for 3 or 4 days typically a rash and its a very disseminated rash the illness called a multisystem implement tory center being seen in children across europe and at least 18 states plus washington d. C. Their reality is that were still going about rian which. Is an acting. Doctors in the u. K. 1st sounding the alarm to this and jim in april since then physicians in other countries including italy and france have reported clusters of similar cases. And what weve seen in the children. Suggests that in some children be that rare small number of kids they have a hyper. Inflammatory response that happens the state of new york accounting for more than 100 infections and 3 deaths a 5 year old boy a 7 year old boy and an 18 Year Old Girl we thought initially bad it didnt affect children were now dealing with an issue thats very disturbing the illness which affects blood vessels and other organs has similar symptoms to talk sex shock syndrome and callous saki disease the main thing about how psyche disease that worries us as pediatricians is that it can leave its untreated lead to something that we call coronary artery aneurysm and those can be fatal and they oftentimes develop after the symptoms of. The disease which is most commonly found in children under the age of 5 was named after japanese pediatrician thomas sacu callous saki after he described 50 cases of infants with persistent fever rash redness and cracking of the lips in 1967 and the 1st cases outside of japan were reported in 1976 the calloused aki disease occurs worldwide the highest instance of infection is in japan for every 100000 children between 132140 kids under the age of 5 that get infected most often affecting boys meantime estimates indicate that at least 3000. 00 cases of the illness are diagnosed each year in the u. S. With less than a point 5 percent mortality rate experts say the illness in most cases can be treated with aspirin reporting in new york trinity charges r. T. This is obviously a story that were going to be staying on top of and yes there is brand new information thats literally coming in daily and hopefully it will clear up some of the confusion out there says the United States from countries all over the world begin to. Putting up stores and restaurants and people start going back to work as question bears asking right do the trends that were seeing about death rate hospitalizations case loads do they truly substantiate the reopening or were inviting a 2nd wave of covert team what are the numbers say one of the researchers saying all week long weve been focusing here on america reopening its what we call the segment its been headed by our own r t correspondent Shoebridge Dunn and she joins us now to tackle this this question for us what are you finding out michel well 1st lets take a look at reopening trends were going to take a look at this map the states that you see in green are the states that are still on lockdown they either have some form of shelter in place order or they still have a statewide stay at home order now arizona actually just had a stand home order expired today and some news out of wisconsin this week on wednesday the Supreme Court actually ended the stay at home order effectively calling the emergency order quote a vast seizure of power so wisconsin no longer on lockdown that state is now green now in red we see the states that still have lockdown policies in place we have vermont which is actually set to have its emergency order expired today but that was it just extended to june 15th and the same of new york today its emergency order was supposed to expire but they just extended that to may 28th but a lot of these red states that are still on lockdown actually have policies that are set to expire before the end of the month before the end of may so lets take a quick look at those all the states that you see here in yellow are either going to be ending their emergency orders in the next few days or set to do that before the end of the month we have minnesota whose order expires on the 17th and North Carolina the 22nd now in maine and New Hampshire all those states have their orders set to expire by the end of the month now lets take a look at where people are dying and lets examine the question that you just asked lets see if theres a correlation between. People dying between these morbidity rates and the states decided to end their lockdown policies now whats important to note is that this is all in terms of total deaths right this is according to numbers released by the c. D. C. Now a covert death in the us doesnt necessarily mean the person died from cold it but it does mean they were showing some symptoms of covert at the time of their death thats how the doctor leading the White House Corona Virus Task force says the u. S. Should be counting deaths so thats the numbers that were working with today no new york of course leading the way both in terms of total death and in terms of death rates new jersey close behind with about 10000 deaths and some of this looks right right we have new york who still on lockdown still totally red and then also still in the red in terms of deaths right lots of deaths coming out of new york some states like oregon for example it looks like theyre being a little bit more cautious right they dont have as many deaths as a state for example like new York New Jersey but they still have their lockdown policies in place theyre still under a state wide stay at home order now illinois is interesting because theyre actually scheduled to reopen but theyre still in the red in terms of death so well have to see if the governor actually follows through or if theyre going to extend their stay at home order like some other states have been doing now wyoming is also interesting because wyoming only has 7 deaths wyoming is actually the state with the least deaths in the country and they never had a stay at home order to begin with now another thing that jumps out right is texas right you see texas is in the green but they also you know still have a lot of deaths there still in the red in terms of total death rate in texas are not on lockdown anymore though right so retail outlets gyms are open the stand home order has totally expired so the question of course becomes why would texas do this and this is why experts are saying that texas should actually start preparing for a 2nd wave but when you consider deaths per 100000 which is what experts say is a better way of comparing different places also accounting for population density texas starts to look a little better so lets take a look at that next map. Ok i guess we dont have that map but when you look at population density texas actually looks lighter tasks this in fact just has 4 deaths per 100000 people and for this reason experts say this is a better way to look at mortality rates and compare different areas while also accounting for population density now rick this is what the numbers say this is what the data says but you also asked what the researchers are saying and theyre not all saying the same thing some say that given these mortality rates you know when you look at new york people should not be going out people should not be doing any type of opening up and people should stay home for example texas should prepare for a 2nd wave but others are saying that because were not testing everyone because these numbers were working with are lower than they should be and the mortality rates are actually higher than they should be a 2nd wave only comes when you institute lockdown policies in the 1st place but of course rick we still know very little about this Novel Coronavirus and if there is a 2nd wave it may not necessarily be obvious to us right away you know a lot of information michelle thanks so much for thank you sharing that with us. And focus now on something having to do with. Whats happening if children go back to school but their parents dont or looked at the other way around what happens when children start going back to school dont go back to school but the parents have to go back to work its that dichotomy that were going to be looking at were going to do that when we come back in just a minute is that is a virtue watching our special coverage will be right back. Dear you or thank you for finally changing the channel i understand youre tired of Networks Learn new with you youre tired of. d the internet. As they are not no matter what part of the night. Its called the feeling of. Every the world should experience. And youll get it on the open roll. The world according to just. Welcome our world come along for the ride. And. Heres the other big story here in the states vaccines so let me start with this polio is one of the worst plagues or epidemics in the history of the world this is like a horror movie it arrived every summer it struck without warning children would suddenly become paralyzed imagine your child one day cant get out of bed and no one knew how it spread no one knew what caused it there was no vaccine for decades. Its the only thing there was was this take a look at this picture you see that its called an iron long. Imagine seeing your child having to be inside that thing inside that machine that breathes for him it was the only way that your child could breathe and then along came this guy this guys name is jonas salk hes a scientist and in 1955 some people say he saved the world saved millions of lives by coming up with a vaccine which he tested on himself and on his own family talk about a sacrifice. Did he he essentially had the patent for the vaccine and he chose not to patent it himself he chose not to become a multimillionaire because he didnt patent it he wanted to give it away and when he was asked why dont you patent it he famously answered with these words can i pattern the sun. He said the sun belong to the world in this patent belong to the world his moral conviction as a human being was that the discovery did not belong to him it belongs to everyone despite being the person who had come up with it now i want to i want to make a comparison to today now lets come back to today the white house today in fact just about an hour ago 45 minutes ago announced that its creating a team to lead the search for a covert 1000. 00 vaccine they say they going to get it done by the end of the year who will lead it a venture capitalist named months if slouchy he comes from the world of big pharma and hes going to be working alongside a 4 star general. Kata me difference joining us now George Galloway former member of the British Parliament i want to create that comparison because i think it says something about the times we live in georgia im not sure what does it say to you. Well the more they talked of the task force the foster i counted my spoons to paraphrase oscar wilde i grew up in the time of polio rick was one of those given an injection for free and then it became a sugar lump actually and it ringback did save the world it certainly saved the children of the world or of course smallpox was a scar across the face of the world which was also eliminated by vaccine and saw vaccines work if theyre properly supervised done properly constituted but the worst possible scramble for a vaccine would be to make multibillion pound profits for individual companies and were seeing some of the ugliness today i dont know if youre across it theres a war of words breaking out between france and the United States because the United States has tried to put a line 1st dibs on a french vaccine thats in the making as they have done with a German Company provoking 1st the german then the french governments to warn these companies that they had given those Companies Huge tax breaks while they were doing their research and they would not allow the dollar to be the king in this if it comes from china or cuba or both working together theres a pledge that the vaccine will be available at cost price but if it comes from 1. 00 of these Big Pharma Companies you can be sure it will be far more than that you know its interesting as i think of this and im glad you mentioned that situation that scarff awful going on today between france and the United States arguing about whos going to own it and whos going to share it with whom look im as much a capitalist as the next guy i do believe that when someone works hard for money they do create an incentive for themselves. To do more but at the same time i worry that if we put everything on green and profit we lose something in the and we may not be able to eventually have scientists leading the charge instead we have money peo
