“You are not a safer driver when you’re high,” according to the Ontario government. “Cannabis affects your judgment, coordination and reaction time, and increases your chances of being in a collision,” the information notes, adding that police reports indicate 74 people were killed in collisions involving a driver under the influence of drugs in Ontario in 2016.
Still, research released in 1999, looked at traffic accident reports from several different countries and concluded “the safety hazards of smoking marijuana and driving are overrated.”
Just this year, investigators out of Australia reported that after smoking moderate to high doses of weed, the “window of impairment” is from three to 10 hours.
