Task Force to release findings on more equitable policing A statewide task force charged with finding solutions for more equitable law enforcement will formally release their findings on Monday. Officially titled the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice, the 25-member group was commissioned by Gov. Roy Cooper to find solutions for prejudicial blind spots within law enforcement. “…there is a long history of structural inequity and racism in the criminal justice system, underscored by the recent officer-involved deaths of Black people,” reads part of an executive order issued by Cooper to create the task force. “Whereas, communities of color are disproportionately affected throughout the criminal justice system, with national data showing that from the point of arrest through potential conviction and sentencing, members of communities of color are significantly more likely than the white population to not have their murders solved; to be pulled over for a traffic violation; to be jailed and imprisoned at a higher rate; and to be sentenced to longer terms of imprisonment…”
