ELIZABETH CITY, NC No officers will be criminally charged in the police shooting of Andrew Brown, Jr., that while tragic, was justified, Pasquotank County District Attorney Andrew Womble said Tuesday.
Womble s assessment of the April 21 shooting death of Brown, 42, comes less than a month after the unarmed Elizabeth City man was killed by a gunshot to the back of his head from Pasquotank County Sheriff s Office deputies as they attempted to serve an arrest and search warrant on drug charges. ....

Cazenovia College professor joins ‘Ivory Tower’ TV Show

Cazenovia College Assistant Professor Ben Baughman, Ph.D. has joined the panelists of the longtime WCNY-TV public affairs commentary show, “Ivory Tower.”
The show’s weekly roundtable discussion focuses on news and events from the perspective of academicians from across Central New York. Panelists hail from Syracuse University, Colgate University, SUNY-Cortland, Onondaga Community College, Utica College and Cazenovia College.
“Ivory Tower” airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on WCNY-TV public television. Dr. Baughman’s first appearance on the show was May 14.
Baughman, director of Cazenovia College’s Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Studies program, joined the college in fall 2020. Prior to that, he taught law enforcement intelligence and investigative psychology at Mercyhurst University at the School ....

Kinston Police Department ends investigation into use of force case

The investigative findings of the April 12 incident of closed-fist strikes used by Kinston police officers on a suspect will be disclosed publicly this evening.
A press conference will be held at 6:15 p.m. today inside Kinston City Council chambers for credentialed media.
The officers McKinley Jones and Kevin Page, both 22, have not received a dismissal, suspension, or demotion for disciplinary reasons taken by the city. The two officers were put on administrative leave following the incident during the investigation into their use of force in this case. 
Officers responded to a panic alarm at 111 W. Vernon Ave. in Kinston. The address is listed as Little Caesars Pizza. Officers touched base with a 38-year-old woman who was the 911 caller.  ....

Mooresville K9 officer Sheldon honored


Police report Sheldon was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

Sheldon was honored during a ceremony Thursday morning.

Task Force to release findings on more equitable policing
A statewide task force charged with finding solutions for more equitable law enforcement will formally release their findings on Monday.
Officially titled the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice, the 25-member group was commissioned by Gov. Roy Cooper to find solutions for prejudicial blind spots within law enforcement.
“…there is a long history of structural inequity and racism in the criminal justice system, underscored by the recent officer-involved deaths of Black people,” reads part of an executive order issued by Cooper to create the task force. “Whereas, communities of color are disproportionately affected throughout the criminal justice system, with national data showing that from the point of arrest through potential conviction and sentencing, members of communities of color are significantly more likely than the white population to not have their murders solved; to b ....
