As the inauguration fell on a school day this year, some social studies teachers added the ceremony to their lesson plans. At Papillion-La Vista High School, freshmen in Tim Williams' American history class sat in silence as the 46th U.S. president was sworn into office. Freshman Kylie McShane said seeing Kamala Harris sworn into the vice presidency is especially important to her." powerful," said McShane. "I feel like as a woman, I feel like, 'Oh yeah, I can do that now.' I can run for office if I want to, vice president. I can do anything now."The students learned about the president's oath, what each inauguration means for the country and the history of presidents who have come before, including those in attendance Wednesday."It shows a lot of respect that they can come out and show like their respects towards Joe Biden at his inauguration." Tim Williams said he wants students to learn the inauguration represents unity."No matter what your opinion is, we got to figure out how to get along and to move forward in one, unified for the country," said Williams. He knows lessons learned now will influence young minds later."My job as an educator is to teach these kids how to form an opinion about history. And how to form an opinion about government and so on, and so forth, and I'm looking forward to them leading us," said Williams. In his speech, President Joe Biden shared an urgent call to action, to create a brighter future for these kids and all others."Will we meet our obligations and pass along a new and better world to our children?" said Biden. "I believe we must. I'm sure you do as well. I believe we will." McShane said she hopes the president's prediction will come true."I care because it's my life in their hands-- and my future," said McShane.
