But on Saturday, its owner, Tane Chan, reported the store was broken into and vandalized for the first time in its entire 54-year existence. In a GoFundMe recounting the incident, Chan, 82, cites the break-in of her shop as another incident of anti-Asian crime afflicting the Bay Area. “Is it a coincidence that this happened now, after all this time of being in business? No,” she said in the post. “Anti-Asian crime continues and we need to be vigilant about it. We need to fight back.”
