The Gainesville Sun Tackle complex issues What incentives do “We the People” provide to our elected officials to solve problems? Do we define success by the number of appearances on cable news, or the number of bills filed? Do we applaud takedowns of opponents on social media, but care little whether or not our politicians spend time debating legislation? Would we rather champion fighters who “own their opponents” than serious-minded people who can shepherd complex policies through the legislative process? Social Security is on the path to insolvency, the cost and complexity of our health care system is staggering and economic inequality continues to grow. Yet politicians often avoid these subjects because engagement won’t win votes and might even get them primaried.
