Richard DesChenes: Archer solar farm shouldn't be erected over local objections

I drive County Road 346 from Archer to Williston Road every day, to and from work. It is unfortunate that the Alachua County Planning Commission recommended erecting a solar farm there against the wishes of the residents of the area.
What is worse is that many of the locals get their electricity from someone other than Gainesville Regional Utilities, so it will be of no benefit to many of them when the project is up and running.
CR 346 is a long patch of pot holes, which is the result of the many heavily laden logging trucks that have been clearing the area for the last few years. It will get much worse. ....

Misguided boycott
Julie Jenkins Fancelli’s financing of Donald Trump s tirade that initiated the insurrection was reprehensible. But more important now is that individuals are calling for a boycott of Publix because of Fancelli s actions.
If this misguided event were to have any success it would be at the cost of the Publix front-line employees. These individuals put their welfare at risk by serving the public.
They are possibly exposed to COVID on a daily basis. They are individuals making a living to support themselves and/or families. Most of the Publix customers show respect for the employees and other customers by wearing masks. There are arrogant customers who show no respect. ....

Changes for Friends of the Library
Like every firm in the country, this has been a helluva year for Friends of the Library. We bought the Junior League space early in the year and now own the whole building at 430 N. Main St., giving us much-needed additional capacity.
Then came COVID-19, which prevented us from holding both our five-day spring and fall sales, disappointing our volunteers and thousands of eager customers. We therefore have a hugely reduced income and cannot contribute to the county s libraries as we have done for 65 years.
We do expect to repeat our recent Bag of Books (BOB) sale in mid-January to mid-February. Other potential sale schemes are in the works. For information, please look at our website: folacld.org. ....
