Traffic citations on University Avenue drop last week Gainesville police reported a significantly lower number of citations, warnings and speeders along West University Avenue between Southwest 34th and 13th streets last week as it diverted more of its resources to another area. Officers instead focused their efforts along Southwest 20th Avenue due to recent fatalities that prompted traffic homicide investigations. GPD continues to collect data on West University Avenue, Southwest 34th Street, Southwest 13th Street and Archer Road, as part of its Special Traffic Enforcement Program. GPD began the program following pedestrian deaths near the University of Florida. The goal of the enforcement effort is to increase awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. Enforcement efforts will focus primarily on education of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Violations may result in warnings or citations, depending on the circumstances.
