Could be close to solving the mystery of one of the americas biggest art thefts. We begin in syria where violence is spiking ahead of president ial elections. The suffering will be highlighted in a big way tomorrow by pope francis. More on the pontiffs visit in a moment. First an attack at a Syrian Campaign rally where dozens were killed. Nobody claimed responsibility for this attack, but we heard from islamist rebels based in the region that today marks a new campaign, an offensive by them to support the rebels and the fighters who are there, fighting the troops of Bashar Alassad. The government in the past few weeks has been on the go, trying to regain control of many areas from the rebels, to give the president ial electi president ial elections dew on 3 june credibility. They want to tell the worth people are supporting the elections. Many are taking part. The results will be valid. The opposition is saying the opposite, saying the country is at war. Bashar alassads elections are a farce, and theres no way to hold Fair Elections under such conditions. They are intensifying their attack on Government Troops and positions and Voting Centers to send that message across. Some of the refugees from the Syrian Civil War will meet with pope francis tomorrow in jordan. Nearly 3 million have fled the country. 6. 5 million are displaced within syria. Jordan has 600,000 refugees. That is where pope francis will begin his trip. More from Nick Schifrin in ayman. I love nail polish. The boots. And this makeup. Reporter when 20yearold fled syria, she had time only to grab prized possessions. Before we travel to jordan, i feel so sad. Her favourite memento, a ring indescribed with the prayer that welcomes gods kingdom, which is what she feels see whether her country has lost. My life was so amazing. In syria there is a lot of freedom, more than here. She and her father fled a city that, for 150 years, was a christian sanctuary. But then the war arrived in maloola. Joseph had to defend had family himself. Translation they shot at our house, at me. I had to go outside and shoot. He fled 18 months ago and his family followed. They live more comfortably than the hundreds of thousands in the refugee camp. Joseph feels like hes imprisoned. He is not allowed to work. Everything that he and his wife is saving for is lost. The most important thing for syrians is to educate his children. I dont have an income that would let me send my daughter to college. During an outing a local charity brings together dozens of families. They may be safer, but they dont feel free. No one will tell the truth or say what they are thinking, he says. Fear controls them. They fear because the most prominent syrian christians are at risk. For 50 years pope francis lived and preached in homs. Three months after the cameraman filmed these scenes, francis was executed. Many accused the regime of trying to silence christians. Judge us according to our humanity, patriotism and loyalty. Reporter this weekend the family will meet the pope and ask him to prayer for those forced from their homes. Translation when you say no you become a free man. In syria, you have to face the consequences. Translation if im afraid of anything, im most afraid i will not be able to return. Reporter they cant return. Jordan refuses to let them integrate. They apply for asylum in canada. They feel they have no choice because to become refugees again. I discussed the popes trip with the Vice President of the global post, a reporter on the Catholic Church, he told us how significant the trip is to the middle east. I think its very significant. I think it comes at an important time, you know. We know that the Israeli PalestinianPeace Process has gone off the rails, its stalled. Nothing is going on. Theres an opportunity here for the pope to reremained everyone who cares about the middle east how important the Peace Process is. I think it is more of a spiritual trip than a political trip, but politics are there on the ground in the middle east. When it comes to the conflict, israelipalestinian collaborations and the wore in syria, how much influence does the pope have . I dont think he has much influence. The church has been eroded, sadly, by the priest abuse scandal. The Catholic Church and this pope has a role to play in reminding everyone about the importance of peace and connecting with the people over the politicians. I think that is the message of pope francis in the holy land. Among the first people hell be meeting with is the refugees from the war in jordan. What should the churchs role be in that context. I think the church does a lot of good work helping the refugees on the border with syria and jordan. That said, the Catholic Church, the vatican, the politics of the church have been somewhat slow to react to the politics of syria and apply pressure, there has been criticism for the church on that. I think it has to be put in context that all governments are struggling to find some way to assert pressure on Bashar Alassad to end the kill, and end the war. That said, i think its fair to put pressure on the church. I think it could do more. Theres a lot of controversy, especially when it comes to the visit to the west bank. How important will this be to the palestinians. Every time the head of state, and a pope is the head of state. Every time someone of statute goes into the west bank and through the checkpoint, and has to deal with the barbed wire and the walls erected between jerusalem and bethlehem. To journey through that, and be there witnessing that and present with the people in the square, where christianity is born in bethlehem, and to stand there with the people and say im hear and under the plight of the palestine people, and i understand how hard it is, its very important. There has been intense criticism of the pope from the israeli far right, and there has been unfortunate, you know, hostile words thrown in the direction of the pope from the israeli right. And i think that the pope is not naive about the intensity of the holy land, about the intensity of a place of shared sacred space between muslims, christians and jews. I think youll see pope francis be him, warm and personable, but well briefed and will walk carefully to avoid the landmines of politics on this trip. It is a big trip, a significant trip for the post. Thank you for your time tonight. A federal judge told the military it can resume forcefeeding a prisoner on Hunger Strike at Guantanamo Bay, a year to the day since president obama recommitted to closing that prison. John terrett is here with more on this. Its an ongoing issue for the president. It has. Its 12 months to the day that president obama recommitted his administration to closing Guantanamo Bay. Its 24 hours since a federal judge told the military to resume forcefeeding a prisoner on Hunger Strike. Hes on Hunger Strike for two reasons. Hes upset at the 12 years hes held without charge and the way hell be forcefed tube down the nose. Reporter protesters in times square demanding the release of Guantanamo Bay business, approved for transfer out the base, but still there, held without charge. The frustration stems from the fact that the administration has authority to transfer at least the men that it has cleared for transfer. Of 154 me at Guantanamo Bay, 77 have been approved to leave by every Government Agencies in the state. At least half the prison could be emptied now. That includes jihad man, cleared for transfer, who a federal judge ruled may be forcefed by the military through a tube via his nose and into the stomach. The judge critical of the d. O. J. For refusing to compromise and finding an internal measure. These measures are used as a way of combatting the men on Hunger Strike, because the prevailing mindset at Guantanamo Bay, and within the department of defense is that anyone who is on a Hunger Strike is conducting asymmetrical wore fair. This man is a 43yearold syrian whom the Guantanamo Bay task force recommended for transfer. As of now he is being held without charge three months shy of 12 years. His Hunger Strike is a way for him to protest his continued detention at Guantanamo Bay. In diabs case and that of others cleared for transfer, the protesters blame the slow progress on the barack obama administration. The fact that the president promised a year ago today that hed restart transfers and reinvigorate efforts to close Guantanamo Bay, and the fact that the president is there, says something about the president s willingness to follow through. Reporter one of the issues is what to do with the prisoners. Many have count trories to go t it governments millions to house them at gitmo. The administration is pushing congress to push through the roadblocks and allow it to finally close streets in thailand are mostly calm. There were a few demonstrations, nothing like the months of protest leading up to the closure. Dozens have been taken into custody, including the former prime minister. More from veronica pedrosa.
