ALJAZAM Real Money With Ali Velshi June 13, 2014

This is real money, and you are the most important part of the show. Tell me what is on your mind. Tweet me or hit me up on facebook. Com ali velshi. Iraq is descending into the abyss. Asil continue their advance towards baghdad. Thats not a country, by the way, thats a group. Shia muslims are heeding a call to arms. That could bring all out sectarian war that could tear the country apart. There have been threatened airstrikes on isils strongholds, but he has called on the shiadominated government of Nouri Almaliki to include more sunnies. The kurds who are muslim but not arabs have taken advantage of the chaos and seized the oil rich city of kirkuk. For years the kurds have demanded that kirkuk be annexed to their region. Maliki sided with the arabs and others in the show oppos city who oppose kurdish control. Now, kirkuk and the oil fields around it produce 17 of iraqs output, but the kurds export much of that through turkey in the north. Theyve already struck out on their own and signed deals with foreign oil companies. Now this is caused a major spat between the curds on one hand and th the maliki government. Even so oi Global Oil Markets see this as a security of the installation from the isil militants. But grabbing kirkuk risks violence in that area. Just to give you the point more clearly. The price of crude oil settled at 106. 91 a barrel. Thats a gain of more than 4 in just one week. So far there has not been disruptions to oil supply because of whats going on in iraq. But fears are causing worries in oil markets. Mary snow has the story. [ gunfire ] in. As fighting escalates oil markets are surrounded by a big if. So far insurgents have taken control of cities in the north. But the majority of iraqs oil is produced in the southern part of the country. Thats where most of its exports feed into world supply. Globally 90 Million Barrels of crude are produced every day, the same amount consumed a day. Leaving little wiggle room for spare capacity. Saudi arabia produces 8. 9 Million Barrels per day followed by russia and then eae. If there were disruption there are a number of options to boost supply. We have Strategic Petroleum reserves all around the world. But more importantly the saudis and the kuwaitis have compare capacity. Reporter saudi arabia is seen as key to making up for any shortfalls, but its the long term threat of supply that raises concern. Iraq has been expected to raise production in the coming years hampering that will crimp output. As one analyst put it its not a question of running out of oil. Its a question of running out of oil at a price youre willing to pay. Mary snow, al jazeera. The oil market cannot afford to lose iraqs supply without suffering a huge price increase. That according to bob mcnally, a firm that focuses on the markets and energy. According to marys research, were not short of oil. Were not going to be short of oil in the long term, but oildemand globally is growing. Iraq was expected to be a contributor to that growing demand . Thats right, ali. Just before the iraq events its important to understand that the view among oil analysts about the Global Oil Market had changed dramatically, even in the last six months. Six months ago everyone thought the market was loosening. And in hopes that libya would come back on. Even in the recent weeks analysts have noted, and this was discussed at the opec meeting that the market was much tighter than people expected. China has been filling its stocks aggressively. Libya has gone off line and demand is healthy. Can opec increase enough in the second half of this year. That was before the risks to iraq emerged. Now i dont see, and most analysts i know dont see a large, direct risk to iraqs Oil Production out to the south, all of the Oil Production, just about all is coming out of the south. Thats well protected by the shia groups down there. But just the threat or risk to that production in the context of this much tighter market that folks are looking at now was enough to send prices up. Opec decided that they were not increasing output in the time being. What was their believe in their ability to begin so. Is there an ability if something goes i dont think in iraq and iraq goes off line like it did during the iraq war, is there enough oil . That is one of the most important questions in global markets, and our answer is no. Lets look at some numbers. We had updates this week from the i. E. A. And the e. I. A. The department of energy analytical branch. The i. E. A. Said there are 3. 3 Million Barrels in compare capacity, the e. I. A. Say there are 2 Million Barrels in spare capacity. Other groups would say a Million Barrels a day. While a risk to that export is low were it to be disrupted there is not enough space capacity to offset it. In that environment prices of oil would certainly soar and you would be looking at a strategic stock release. Weve seen a 4 increase in the price of oil in the last week. Thats pretty significant. Youre saying we have to be closer to the 10 range before people start to feel it here in the United States . I think thats right. You know, we have to see if this 4 sticks. The 4 in crude holy would take three weeks to feedback to pumps here back home. Well see 3. 70 to 3. 80. When it gets to well over 4 at the coast thats when voters notice, thats when voters get angry. Thats when Congress Takes a hit. I think this has to go considerably hire before we see a difference at the pump. Does this produce opportunities for other companies. Companies that move to the south of iraq from the north of iraq are doing very well and will do better. As your discussion pointed out the curds are going to come out winners in this. They solidified their control of the city of kirkuk. Its more likely that maliki and the Central Government will have to come to terms with the kurds and sell some of their oil out through turkey. They tried to sell it earlier and the baghdad government did not try to stop it. But now theyll help from the krg to fight the isil. The krg is the kurdish group. Thank you. Time for golf to loosen up. Traditionalists are teed off about some of the ideas to attract younger people to the game. Well tell what you some of them are. But First Electric cars have been slow to take off. Well take you to one city where theyve experienced pedal to the metal growth. Thats next. Ext. Award winning investigative documentary series its getting to be so pretty soon when you see a car on the road you may say, i remember those. G. M. Is recalling half a million cars. This time the chevy camaro. There is an ignition switch defect. That sounds familiar. Bisi onileere with the details. Reporter the defect has been linked to a number of crashes in which some people actually have gotten hurt. There are some similarities between this recall and the recall issued back in february that landed the automaker in hot water. As it stands right now General Motors has recalled 16 million vehicles worldwide just this year. Thats a record. Next week g. M. Ceo mary barra will return from grilling by lawmakers in the initial recall that has been lynched to a number of deaths and accidents and will be joined by the attorney who led the internal investigation into this matter. At this point it appears that General Motors isnt taking any chances when it comes to safety. When there is a red flag unlike before. Now the automaker will speak up. Bisi onileere, al jazeera detroit. Sales of electric vehicles are still just a sliver of the 16 million cars and instruct sold in the United States every year. Now of all the vehicles registered in america electrics make up less than half of 1 . But in some areas sales are picking up speed. It might not surprise you to learn that nine of the top ten markets in electrics are on the west coast. Get this, atlanta ranks number two right behind San Francisco. Atlanta, the reasons include financial incentives that some lawmakers say are too generous. Reporter in the deep south a growing number of people are ditching their gas guzzlers and going electric. I have no maintenance on the car. There isnt an oil change every 3,000 miles or anything like that. Reporter danny commutes in this sprawling metropolis of atlanta. He was tired of spending money on gasoline so he bought this electric car. Reporter what is your tax incentive on this vehicle . There is a 5,000 tax credit from the state of utah. Reporter what does it cost you to charge this car. Its approximately 20 extra a month. Reporter the main Utility Company Georgia Power offers an off peak rate that thats 10 less than the National Average. Im saving on energy costs because im not purchasing gas. Reporter 2 of vehicles on the roads here in atlanta are electric. But that number is five times the National Average, and as the numbers continue to increase we start to see more charging stations like this one in a parking lot of a grocery store. Thats no surprise to Scott Whiteman who sells nissans in the metro area. Were selling 100 of these a month now. I wish i had more that i could put out. But i cant get enough of them. Reporter over 50,000 have been sold in the u. S. And 110,000 worldwide. The average Sticker Price just over 30,000. But some georgia lawmakers are concerned by the rising costs of the they want to phase out the tax credits. Georgia representative chuck martin was one of them. He said at times it makes sense to boot Strap Technology if thats for the greater good. But at some point where a subsidy on a twoyear lease makes it free i think thats too generous and not good policy. Atlanta city hall could not agree more. One, it helps. And the second thing atlanta loves technology. Heres an opportunity to take advantage of it. It works for us. You see individuals reducing their over all operational costs. Atlanta second in sales only to San Francisco in the u. S. , and electric car driver would like to see more public charging stations. He said this is only the beginning of a fastmoving trend. I think the technology will get better. There are other companies beside nissan. I think the range is only going to get a little bit better. All those things combined will bring more people towards a cheaper alternative as far as our energy costs. Tesla, chevy make a lick trick model. And ford is making similar ones. The trend is accelerating even if politicians try to put on the breaks. Elon musk announced that tesla is making its vast array of Technology Patents available to the public. He said at this point its more important for tesla to help electric cars become more mainstreamed regardless of what Company Makes them. Chris covers the Auto Industry in u. S. A. Today. Good to see you, is this a good idea, giving way they are patents in good faith in the hopes that it energizes, no pun intended for the car market. Reporter elon musk thinks it will. He doesnt think that tesla is giving up much by giving up its patents. It says it will keep on innovating and staying ahead of its own patents. I believe that is true on elon musks part. But what has to happen to make it mainstream. Weve seen the leaf, its fully electric. Weve seen the volts in terms of values going up and down in various months. And now weve got tesla. What is the tipping point. Its the chicken and egg program. We need enough high mileage model where is consumers are saying thats terrific. We have manufacturers that have a wide array of models that get more than 150 to 200 miles per charge and we have consumers saying sign me up. Id really love to drive without buying a drop of gasoline. I would have thought that, yo, but americans adapt very easily. With what is going on in iraq gasoline prices could go up. Every time we see a big spike in gas electric sales, hybrid sales and plugin sales go right along with it. Lets talk about infrastructure. One of the reasons why we have these cars in california and the west coast is because weve got charging infrastructure out there. And the gentleman who drove that leaf in robert rays piece said gosh, he just wants more charging stations. Remember, tes tesla has been the leader. They have been installed super chargers with the idea that you could drive from l. A. To San Francisco or new york to boston and know youre going to have a charging infrastructure along the way. These are high speed chargers. You can get almost a full charge in 30 minutes of charging. Other automakers have not followed as quickly in that area. There are a lot of charging stations out there, and theyre getting various amounts of level of use. When you look at this, obviously tesla gets the ink on it because this is all that tesla does. But the leaf has been out there. The volts have been out there. Who has the edge. Tesla is making the most noise. Nissan leaf is all electric and they say the next generation will have better range, and then the chevy volt which has the plug in and back up gas. The sales have been okay but the focus is not on it like some of the others. When we talk about the infrastructure, as there is more infrastructure fully electric vehicles will do better than the volt. The volt is the one that you want if you want to hedge. Thats. Most of the mainstream automakers think thats the way that the market is going to go. Theyre not big believers of pure electric. Chrysler said dont buy our electric car. Because they say they lose 14,000 on every one they sale. Thanks for being us with.
