ALJAZAM Real Money With Ali Velshi December 13, 2014

Im David Shuster in for ali velshi. This is real money. The obama white house, and republicans helped pass a 1. 1 trillion Government Spending bill. According to published reports the most controversial section of the bill was written word for word. We have more on that in a moment. The legislation is now in the hands of the u. S. Senate. If it passes that Chamber President obama said he will sign it immediately. The bill keeps federal funding more or less at current levels through next september except for homeland of security. Funding for that is only approved through the end of february. The house passed a bill moments before a funding deadline that could have led to a Government Shutdown today. Despite the down to the wire maneuvering that was actually no real threat of a shutdown. Thats because the house after the spending bill vote also passed. The 48 funding extension that kept federal offices open while the Senate Considered main legislation. The main bill in the senate could see procedural hurdles. Senator Elizabeth Warren is up in arms over one rider that would loosen funds. Warren blasted her colleagues asking them who does Congress Work for . Does it work for the millionaires, billion narrows, the giant companies with their army of lobbyists and lawyers . Or does it work for all the people. Based on revelations out today. We now have the answer. Patricia sa gba has the story. Reporter buried on page 616 of the bill is a bombshell. A provision repealing a key doddfrank financial reform that would prevent banks from leaving tax payers on the hook when certain risky trades go sour. Drafted with published reports with language that came directly from citigroup lobbyists the contentious item had opponents crying foul. Wall street can now continue to engage in reckless derivative speculation. Reporter derivatives that bet heavily on the Housing Market were a driving force behind the 2008 financial meltdown. The doddfrank provision was designed to make sure federally insured banks do not put tax payers at risk when they engage in exsessionsive speculation. The thought is if they have access to that bail out money, theyre all the more likely to engage in even more risky trading in higher volumes. While the white house does not support rolling back such protection it is willing to live with it to get a spending bill passed. On balance the president is pleased with what was clued in this proposal. Big banks have spent millions lobbying congress to repeal regulations they claim are bad for the economy. But with tax payers still biffleing over bail outs, a revision that could invite wall street excess is a bitter pill for many to swallow. The liberal wing of the democrats have come out against the spending bill leading the charge Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts. Shes relatively new to the senate but not to washington battles over regulation. Her willingness to take on legislation she spearheaded for president obama. Now shes up against those same republicans and perhaps her own party when it comes to a spending bill she called the worst for government and best for rich and powerful. It should not get to hold the entire government hostage to threaten a Government Shutdown in order to roll back important protections that keep our economy safe. Shes up against Party Leadership that worry a second Government Shutdown will look bad to an American Public that is fed up with gridlock. Warren said that her stance against the standing bill is exactly why she should be the countrys next president. They launched their run warren run campaign, urging her to run in 2016. Were joined now from washington. Good to have you on the program. Elizabeth warren. She could gum up the senate legislation. She could essentially cause a shutdown while she complains. Is that something that she should do if she feels so strongly against this bill . Its good to be here. But ill tell you the house and senate has shown that they can pass temporary spending measures while they have this debate. As much as none of us want a shutdown, we also dont want wall street to write special rules and loopholes in the dead of night, get them slipped into spending bills that are not supposed to be regulation and passed into law. Center warren took this fight fought American Public. With it turns out when you have the light of day on these special interest loopholes, the balance of power changes very fast. So you would like her to do whatever she can to block it bill. Even if it means that the senate does have to pass a shortterm spending bill, a c r if this particular legislation does not go through. You dont want to give away the farm in order to prevent a short delay to get the final legislation. This is a deal that would allow wall street to go back to some of the same practices that got us into the financial crisis in the first place, and in the same bill if would radically increase the amount of money that individuals can poor in to political parties. Its the quid and the quo in the same law. Thats no good. Its just as Elizabeth Warren said. Its the worst for the government and for the rich and the powerful. Its something that i dont think the American People in either wate part want y want to see the government do. You know, Elizabeth Warren does not need move on. Org advice to know how to stand up against wall street special interest. She has made extraordinary and bold decisions every day to battle the lobbyists. What shes show something you can stand and fight. You can change the game on this stuff. She had the idea for the Consumer Financial protection bureau, and now its law. We know shes going to be battling every day for the next two years and we hope for eight years in the white house for an economy that works for regular americans. Rather than the top 1 . We know that Elizabeth Warren is well aware what the movement has done to draft her for president. What has been her response . We reached out to her office, and they said thanks for the heads up. Senator warren said repeatedly shes not running for president. Its a presenttense statement. Thats what she said before she decided to throw her hat in the ring for the senate. There was a Draft Campaign i in 2012 that showed her that there would an Grassroots Army by her side, and it was it was the best way to change the world and make things better for americans. We want to show her if she decides to run for the White House Well be right there every step of the way. And if she runs, she could win. Do you think shes incapable of taking on wall street and takin help the middle clasp. We welcome leadership from any democrat or Republican Party to make this economy work for regular americans. We think that Elizabeth Warrens voice would have a transformative effect on american politics, and we think that its a winning message. We think that she could win in a democratic primary, but general election. No matter where you go, people are fed up with wall street writing the rules and leaving americans to with the bill. If she runs for the democra democratic election. Who would you like to see run. The thing with the republican crowd pretty much all of them are bowing at the altar of wall street. We see them making retreats to cook brothers, she wille sheldon aide adelson , we think she would be a strong contender against any pick in the republican pack pack. In terms of Elizabeth Warren being confident one to ten, how confident are you that she jumps in to this president ial contest. There are no sure things in american politics, i wont give you a number, but well be on the ground making sure that its clear to her and the country if she runs shell have an army by her side. There are millions of americans who need her voice fighting for them in washington not just in the senate but on the National Stage at the highest levels. Were going to keep on fighting and make sure that she hears us loud and clear. Ben wikler from washington move on. Org. Thank you for coming. Thank you. Pleasure to be here. Were back to the controversial spending bill. Its the subject of real moneys brand new series between the lines appearing on monday. Well go to the pristine deserts of arizona for an up close look provision of the bill that will give land over to a foreignowned Copper Mining company. If you look over my shoulder youll see the copper mine. Thats where it is set to start operations. This is the largest copper mine in the entirety of north america. But that races concerns about the water table and the ancient ancestral land of the apache beyond the verdict and on the streets theres been another teenager shot and killed by the police a fault lines special investigation theres a general distrust of this prosecutor courageous and in depth. Its a target you cant get rid of. The untold story. Who do you protect . Of whats really going on in ferguson they were so angry because it could have been them fault lines, ferguson race and justice in the u. S. One hour special only on Al Jazeera America mitt romneys career and private equity in the huge wealth that wrought in many voters against him. Especially after infamous remark after the 47 . But that was the 2012 president ial election. Now as we look ahead to the 2016 race private Equity Investments could become a problem for jeb bush. The former republican governor will announce soon whether hes running for nomination, and details of bushs Business Affairs came to life thanks to an article if bloombergs business week. The article describes you how jeb bush set up an equity money in 2013 through britain hill he created three funds under britton hill. One of them raised 61 million mostly from foreign investors. Its incorporated in the united kingdom. The bloomberg said its set up like a tax haven. And bh logistics with backing from a chinese conglomerate. Joining us about the mitt romney problem, joshua green, welcome, terrific piece. Before we get into the politics, give us a quick overview of what bush is investing in, its mainly energy. Hes investing in shale oil explore rare, and the companies that have giant Oil Container ships, and he appears to be invested in a company that does airline servicing in hong kong. The big picture story is hes attempting to profit from chinas growing demand for energy through a number of different venues, and hes doing it through these three entities that he started up under britain Hill Holdings company. Is that the biggest hurdle, and what are some of the other hurdles he may be facing . The link to china could an hurdle. China has been a hotbutton issue in a lot of campaigns. One of the big hurdles is the fact that his latest fund is offshore and running in the wake of mitt romneys loss in 2012 we know what hidden investments and offshore accounts comes with a baggage that proved damaging to the last republican nominee. And so i think there is good reason to suspect that it might also be damaging to bush, if in fact, he gets in the race and decides to pursue the nomination. Mr. Bush would not give you an interview, but his spokesman provided a statement saying quote are republican strategies also saying that there would not an hence dance . They basically said if you look at mitt romneys experience that being a private equity mogul is not a credential that is going to be popular with republican or democratic voters. Tell us about bh logistics. What does bush get out of these connections . Well, money. They are investors in funds. When he goes out and raises private equity fund he has funds that he gets management fee, a share of the profits. But just like mitt romney in bain capital, you go, get money from investors, grow that and make a profit. Could it appear that the chinese get Something Else other than a possible return on their investment . They get a business dealing with someone who could be the next president of the United States . Yes, thats possible. And to be fair they get Something Else, too. China wants to be invested in u. S. Shale oil, but they dont want to be the main line investors for all the political reasons you just mentioned. So typically what theyve done is get in as a minority partner in other peoples funds. Bush and bushs fund are a perfect vehicle because not only does he have a brand name in china where his dad was former u. S. Envoy, but he will be the focus of the fund, and they will not be the focus of the fund. Thats the advantage from the standpoint of his chinese investors. If he turns around and runs for president i think that will change and youll see a focus. As i focused in my piece who are these investors. What are they getting. What do they want. Are they trying to influence u. S. Politics and u. S. Policy. Thats still an open question. And threaten as far as global aviation draws money to this u. K. Based fund and ideas that enables those investors to avoid certain taxes and benefits the bush quicket fund . One of the reasons that you would move the fund offshore is not subject to taxes and regulations. They only tax profits made in great britain. If youre invested in an airline in hong kong you could make money. You wont necessarily have to pay taxes on that money. If your fund is based in the u. K. As bushs new fund is. Terrific reporting, and no doubt there will be more of it. Josh, thank you for coming on the program. We appreciate it. Thank you. Just ahead on real money how low will oil go . In the high stakes games in the shap shale producers, well look at the as, and who has the advantage, and what it means for you in just two minutes. Oil prices fell to the lowest level in five years. Crud fell blow 58 an hour. Crude settled at 2. 14, the lowest since 2009. This is causing considerable concerns in canada, which relies heavily on income from oil. Were in toronto with more. The arrival of winter here in canada is being softened somewhat this year. Gas prices have never been oil as oil gasses decline. Its cheaper to fly to a sunny destination. But most importantly, people heat their homes with heating oil or national gas. Those prices are declining, too. There is another part of toronto, indeed, another part of this country where Falling Oil Price are not good news at all. Obviously oil is a huge importance to the national economy, and in other parts of the country like in alberta, they provide revenues. So falling prices are causing havoc. How long they fall is a key thing. Here in th the financial capitol weve seen carnage on the floor of the stock exchange. This country, this citys economy, its banks, its law offices all around me in downtown toronto, theyre dependent on the Energy Companies doing well, and theyre not doing well at the moment. Reporting from toronto. Stocks in canada are not the only ones feeling the the pressure in the drop of prices. You can see the dow lost nearly 2 . The nasdaq and s p 500 lost 1 each. Consumers should benefit from Cheaper Energy since paying less for gas puts more spending in their pockets. Analysts agree that the low prices are likely to last through next year. It all depends how brinkmanship between energy producers, including the United States, plays out. Thats according to steve levine. We join us from washington. Steve, explain this clash between opec and u. S. Oil and shale producers and how you see it playing out. Thanks a lot. The prevailing wisdom that has been happening in oil prices is that saudi arabia decided it was going to take on u. S. Vai shale, and the idea it was going to sell its own oil for knockdown prices around the world, and that would challenge highpriced u. S. Shale players, and as a result in them having to close down their operations. The presumption underlying this thesis is that saud saudi arabia and other opec members are low cost oil producers. Shale is high priced, and opec players would survive, u. S. Shale would have its legs knocked out from under it. But there is a fallacy here, what is really the case is that owe beck is by far the higher producer. Companies are owned by the states. And 80 , 90 of the budgets come from the holy company. Therefore the price that the companies that middle east saudi receive for oil is inextricable from government income. Therefore, the break even point, the price that audi arabia needs to sell its oil at minimum is 86 an barrel. Theyre getting hammered right now. They miss judged the durability of the shale market, and in the process theyre killing themselves. Well, they may have misjudged. The main thing is that there is bloodletting. There is bloodletting in the United States in that share players are suffering from low prices. But opec is suffering, too and the question is in this brinksmanship who is going to cry uncle first. Is. Is it possible that there could be a cost that if there is geopolitical stability, and im thinking particularly with russia which depends oh heavily on oil. Its true that this is a very uncertain time. So weve been cheering this on because of this brinkmanship ourselves with russia. Weve been having nuclear discussions with russia. Antagonism with venezuela. There has been joking around that theyre suffering but this does mean uncertain inavailability for these governments. What does it mean if one of them fall . Venezuela could di fault any day now. We dont know what the outcome will be. How the countries will react as the economic it looks likes it will last for one year. We appreciate it. To leader of the free world will anyone be spared from the hack attack in corporate history . The damage to sony continues to pile up following a major I
