It's time for you up to date with what happened very very bad tempered exchanges in the Commons yesterday from M.P.'s of all sides of all persuasions will bring you bang up to date very very shortly But next a city council team dedicated to bringing empty houses back into use is calling on people to report properties which have fallen empty you know just like don't you if you've seen a building which has just maybe gone to wrack and ruin slightly no one's been living in it all sorts of issues arise don't they that it's seems a real waste and also it can cause anti-social behavior and all sorts of different problems well Bridget Blair has been to see an empty house in the new found pool area of the city to see just what impact that it's been having on those who live right close by what you think about empty houses you know move something out I think they should be filled up a lot quicker than they are the moment and are not for people to live in because they just end up people breaking in their views known to the trucks and everything and it's just not fair on the people in the community the kids play they don't know what to expect to get their men in the houses from and they're not being used to get the rats commune in the gardens Anderson it's just not very nice for the children to play as. Yes we've been dealing with that particular property in many of the empty properties through our city for quite a while and with consistency perseverance we've finally managed to get that one compulsory purchase we got confirmed order on it we try to work with owners and often the public and not aware of you know what goes on behind the scenes but we need to establish exactly why the properties empty. Listen to the owners concerns because they often have them and work with them but we always set time scales for them to do certain things and if they don't do them we always follow up then we move the property to the next stage in the process so I've got a team of dedicated offices that are all very experienced now I've got 4 of them they work citywide tirelessly to get these properties bought back into use it's very frustrating but we continue once we get once we know the property is genuinely empty and it's cool it's very problematic at this particular was finally at the end of the process if the owner does not do what they say they're going to do and we give we have to demonstrate that we worked with the owners then we get a confirmed order now the executive since 2004 have approved a total of 119 properties for compulsory purchase back and so when you when you've managed to get a house back into into your right in the shape what will happen say well you know it's now going to happen to that house and you can pull that that's caused so much hassle to die right so it's not in the possession of the council we we have already taken steps to clear the garden which was completely inaccessible so the next stage then is to get the property put into action we tend to do that some properties we also. Purchase internally to replenish the housing stock under the affordable homes program this is a problem it's never the act is it just there isn't enough housing to go around for everyone who needs it whether it's a set of 3 housing associations private ownership that kind of thing it just seems such a terrible waste doesn't it but it is a waste of a resource and as you said we've got acute housing shortage in less there but also nationally and we've got a total of $4965.00 empty properties citywide that we are aware of so if I can for a total of $4965.00 properties within less the city that is astonishing Yes and she properties that are just sitting that yes with no one in them yes so we are aware of those and currently are not active caseload and we deal with the long term empty properties over 18 months so we're dealing with $300.00 in 3 properties at the minute and about 3 percent of those have gone through to legal where we start the process the compulsory purchase what are some of the reasons that the property owners are telling you about why they are just leaving these places just you know to roll out Yes I mean I have to say that we deal with privately owned properties and owners sometimes a property may be appropriate probate Sometimes the owner may be in a care home so we need to establish exactly why the properties with those types of properties. We could see but that's compulsory where we monitor those because you know it's quite sensitive area so we want to see those on a regular basis to see if when the circumstances change what can be done to bring it back into use but then there's all the properties that may have a legal dispute there maybe a dispute between siblings because they've inherited the property because it doesn't quite so. Doesn't it you know when you think you've got this massive resource 5000 properties potentially could house plate after all it is is there any way you can speed things up well because we have to produce evidence that we've worked with openness if say you know the properties derelict or the gardens overgrown You know you know they've got health issues often this there's certain things I mean obviously we can't go into detail about specific cases due to the general data protection regulation but we are often aware and in touch with the owners so we are working with them behind the scenes maybe that's the thing behind the scenes as we just had a few messages you know not from people living in the city I should say so it wouldn't be under your remit but Pat's been in touch to say that there's a property on need tonight in Wigton that's been empty and derelict for the last 20 years plus rise in disgrace no one seems to do anything about it what would you do if that's happening in your story yeah I have to say that we lost city council there with the city boundary so weeks' time would think it's likely be the council . O.p.m. We could restore it and so sometimes the properties that are reported to us they're not within our boundary. So we would refer the caller or the person who's reporting it through to that because you're all phony to yeah cause you don't know these these halves are there and unless people tell you I mean this is what this is all about isn't it you have to know yeah these properties are yes yes so it is national empty homes week I have to say and what what what we want him to do is speak to members of the public encouraging them to report the properties which is often the 1st way that we get a referral this property's to we will always look into the circumstance and the situation to some properties fall outside the home strategy and we can deal with them but we will always let the person that reports the property know that either it's been added to the case load or it's outside the arena.
