That is clept B.B.C. Subset I'm Charlie Tyler with you through until 10 o'clock tonight it is time for the pub quiz here maybe some that we're heading back to the bell a Broadway which is such a glamorous title. That connected with the A.B.C. Some of that. If it makes. Actually on Broadway. Which as far as I know that they're not actually. In the village of Broadway near omits but it's a fine pub nonetheless so when I was away last week a glass of wine festival. My very good colleague Ben went along to the back it's a hard life isn't sitting in for me to go to the pub. So he went along had a chat with them found out a bit about them spoke to a few various different people around. Yesterday we had a question to do with. The teams that Ian both them played ball county teams the answer was Somerset to share and Darren world on to those saying there are. No idea what we've got today let's find out straight away and head to the pub. That connected please B.B.C. Sound the same. So today Ben is back with Richard who we had from yesterday he's the bells quizmaster Richard has done some research on the history of Broadway and on the pub it self which dates back to the 17th century. Well good evening it's B.B.C. Somerset it's connected I'm Ben I've been sitting in for the end of last week and one of the amazing jobs you get to do you on his program can't believe I'm being paid to do it I'm sat with Richard and we're outside the bell in Broadway this week bring any of the questions for the pub quiz Richard is the resident quizmaster here at the Bell one of the things that they told me is that you are particularly knowledgeable about this that the history of this pub since you've been here and you know a little bit about the local history tell us a bit about your 1st your 1st experiences of this pub Well yeah that makes it sound like all I'm interested in is the pub and I do know a little bit about the restaurant and I want to ask you a quick bit of background if it appears in the Doomsday Book so it goes back you know to very early times as far as the pubs concerned we can trace it back to at least the middle of the 17th century run right 164045 maybe we did a bit of research down at the Somerset History Library in Norton Fitzwarren and found a bit more information we're sitting in the pub is here an opposite you will see. It is the Alexander every zones has his which are indicted in $1580.00. Some time in the early 17th century so the 2 I would've thought were possibly you know connected because it's a sort of center of the this part of the village my 1st experience here was coming down with my father when I was probably about 7 years old. The other little comic that I say is I was here the night that President Kennedy was assassinated with. One a packet of crisps I must nothing alcoholic How did how did you hear of the news that when that happened 0 one of our friends that came running in from the houses is there and said Oh President Kennedy's been assassinated. So you always say you remember where you were the night that President Kennedy was assassinated I was here in the health you know it was a busy night what was the reaction to that it wasn't ready because you know it was here I'm a brother and another friend in what they called a little sort of joke I'm Boland so we used to go in there and we were allowed in there but I don't know how many were in the rest. So but back to the facts of this I mean the 1600s Was it well yeah 6 as I say about 60 we think somewhere around about 164045 probably when the wreath with the restoration and chose the 2nd because obviously during the Cromwellian period. They weren't too keen on people enjoying themselves and. I found that of course when when Charles the 2nd came back to the throne the merry monarch. I think people. Began to enjoy themselves a bit more pubs open people were allowed to sing and dance and make a bit more fun than they were during the the Commonwealth as it was called and they made up for lost time I think they made out for and and as I say with the pub having being closed for a couple years we're making up for it now as well as yeah and well I mean what would it what would a typical pop go be doing in here in the in the 1600s what sort of person would they have been well. I would have thought they would have been farm workers because mainly around here there was Farm Workers there was a tannery up the road so there was there wouldn't people who work in the tannery would have come here. Mainly I would have thought as I say farming farming folk very often the pub was always see. Run by somebody who actually had another. Business and I know we did find out in the 18th century that the landlord came from came over from intense in Georgia and used to make. Weeks for gentlemen you know and you know in the 18th century used to see them sitting there with their wakes and what of course your long tray pipes where he he was a week maker and he made the weeks and ran the pub all at the same time in a very enterprising shop it sounds like and would he have done his own bed you think I think most of them would have done made their own barrel of course they might well have been some local side to from the farm hold water but certainly they would have been there and. In fact a lot of the pubs around here were actually just to start with writes well before we start going into too much in-depth discussion about side effects that's one of my favorite subjects you better move on and question 3 of the pub quiz to bring you and House questions very. Well as you say we run this quiz here and one thing we do people not to do when we don't allow it is to Google the answers because that is most unfair but we have that rule as well but I'm not sure how many people. What does Google stand for that. Job You know that there was question wasn't no it was the question no no it wasn't a question but when you when you got in touch with us to give us your 1st answer you said that the L stands for language Yeah but you don't know what the rest of it that's We just know that the L stands for language no no they're. Just you know interested in what it stands for no right but you know you spoke you would tell Welsh was hoping you would tell me I didn't know it stood for anything. You know the answer to my questions 10 is not dead what is your question. What is the burn rate of Dec court now I'm guessing this is something you learned in the military or while you were a sailing was it. Well. Charlie you know old tank or. I don't know why Ted why why you asked me a question this is my pub quiz this is you bringing up the burn rate of. Depakote or whatever you're saying what is now what tell me what is that called det cord it stands for detonation or if you thought just what I say that's why you need to know the burn rate on it OK it's 40 feet per 2nd well I feel we've all learned something you know what then you can have one about 40 feet per 2nd move remember that when we luckily it's just me and you hearing this so we haven't given the answer way to anyone else. Oh OK I got you wanted to tell me what does Google stand for and what I found is that you don't catch and B You only know that the Alice stands for language it's not right just to recap. Could it be for. Charlie. I don't know. But you do know that the L stands for language on Google. Call that. You got that from a friend. She had a pretty much she's a police officer could you if you could ask a police officer friend what the rest of Google stands for that would be marvelous dent always a pleasure I think thank you very much for getting in touch with us I don't know I don't know either it's just got half past 9 it's destroyed just about says on the pub quiz. Sarah and yeah it's got the right on so well done here's the question today by the way it's nothing to do with detonation Question 3 What color is the L. In the loto that is your actual question the L. Stands for language. Knew that but he didn't care what the rest of it stood for. And yet she says I can't google the answer because I don't have the Internet at home Sarah well. One day Internet will reach the 8 but at the moment Gloucestershire remains I hear a hole in the into where the. Garrion told us as I protest as I can't even see even if I did look it up because I'm colorblind Well Gary that yeah that which would be a bit of a problem the thing is that Gary what you haven't done is put an answer on your tax so I don't know what B. You haven't I know you haven't cheated because you haven't give me. Barrie an element still has got the wrong answer I'm afraid Yeah no it's not that one. This is Blue Daisy uncross go I'm wondering if it's this car no it's not done in class to me as I said managed to get it right so eventually what I'm done. And we did learn that detonation cord buttons at 40 feet per 2nd and Helen is in a van is gone for an answer as well which Yeah Mom Pop I'm afraid Helen in a van is not the right answer but nice try thank heavens. And in touch always lovely to hear from all of you your answers and if sometimes callers come on and they ask me questions which are completely unrelated to anything. Which which we're talking about let's find out what the answer is let's head back to the pub Here's Ben who's with Richard. So we're back with Richard who's the resident quizmaster here at the bell which is in Broadway which is just a bit outside of elements just off the A 358 lovely little village that we've come inside now because although it's glorious sunshine outside athletes come in and sample a bit the atmosphere inside the pub stood in with a survey in the snug Richard yes it was prior to the refurbished as we've been done recently there was a partition wall across here so yes you call it is mainly where all the locals. Certainly feels very snug because we've got a nice wood burning stove here lots of various assorted different bits of we call them I suppose you call them couches when you can go and have a nice a nice point and a chit chat with some of the locals in this little corner of the pub to the left hand side of the bar got some knick knacks on the wall it's all very cozy but more importantly we want to find out the answer to today's pop quiz question what was the question again remind us Richard it was what color is the AL in the Google logo so I should hope that none of you cheated on this one and and went to Google to fight. It would have been very easy to do. What is the answer Richard 1st of all right the answer is that the Al is green And interestingly all the other letters are primary colors so that's red yellow and blue but they deliberately chose a secondary color green for the AL and white what do they do that. I think you want to google it and find there. Well you can find the answer certainly but just for the benefit of those amongst us that don't have internet connections there is a there is a reason for that isn't the answer is that Google does not always follow the rules well some might say they do somewhat so they don't know where the let's not get into that but but that's the reasoning behind it fascinating Many thanks for your time Richard will be back for another pub quiz tomorrow night on the evening show it's been a pleasure thank you all fascinating but we didn't find out there what Google stood for debris from the L. Which we know is language. There you go green a great read I go through it the 1st G. Is blue the 1st oh he read the 2nd is yellow the 2nd G. Is also blue but there's a lower case G.'s compared to the 1st one then the owl that's the only green as we're hearing and the on the end he's read thank you to those getting in touch we've got Dave Dave I think is a big fan of computers here so Dave's helping us out Dave says Google is simply a misspelling of Google which is G W O G O L which is a very large number it's one followed by 100 zeroes Although we go Dave probably doesn't stand for anything THANK YOU THANK YOU A Goodness knows where language came from and all the detonation cord or whatever he was talking about. We go there in the end the Google Al is green light on to fit and while is also getting the right answer coming in to man it at the end got in touch with the yellow which we now know. Is not the right. 23 minutes. To some schools and find out how everyone standing in Chat on the. Decision because I misspoke a step for my house. And you know. What. Blew out and all rise 18 minutes to 10 o'clock it's B.B.C. Some sound Charlie 10 with you until 10 I would. Before Time we're going to be hearing from Claire Donahue she read another extract from her book The Night Stalker we had a great one last night really enjoyed that looking forward to the next one here Sandra the producer the long suffering producer of this program is here Hi Sandra Good evening you've had calls about what Google stands for I asked her Do we think it does actually stand for something well I don't know I speak to the lovely Joy effect in the game and she was telling me what she when she just searched for and what came up on her screen so she Googled it she Googled google OK She Googled it which is stuck in one of the other one maybe you know maybe she's going to escape or the one where you get to plant trees with every set and all I don't know Nancy I want to know when you get to plant trees what they send you a little seeds doing there you plant a tree with every set you do you know what if you're not near a. Valuable area I don't often Google things around places where I can plant trees I can put them in here. Bring in I'm frightened trusting I say
