This is bbc news. The headlines. The number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus in the uk has risen to 206. Milton keynes hospital is isolating people who came into contact with the man in his 80s who died from the virus on thursday. We currently have five patients who are isolated and have been tested and we are awaiting the results to come back. And we have asked nine staff to self isolate. 140 britons remain quarantined on board a cruise ship off the coast of california in which 21 people tested positive for coronavirus. There is a rush for me to get off the ship. I have stage four and a crying candour
michael katz are my tumours are actively going. It will not be easy to off load this ship. Actively going. It will not be easy to offload this ship. At 8 30pm we will bring you a special programme on coronavirus, how it spreads on the action you can take. In other news, £360 million will be paid by Insurance Companies to clean up the damage from storms dennis and keira. And in the 6 nations rugby, england held on to beat wales at twickenham. Good evening. The number of coronavirus cases in the uk has passed 200. It comes as the deputy chief medical officerfor
passed 200. It comes as the deputy chief medical officer for england has warned that the chances of the uk missing an epidemic now are slim to nil. In total 206 people had now been infected in the uk, two people have died. Both were elderly and had Underlying Health issues. Globally, there are more than 100,000 cases and nearly three and a half thousand people have died, the vast majority in china. Our health corresponded Dominic Hughes reports. The second person to die in the uk after being infected with coronavirus is a man in his 80s who was being treated in hospital in Milton Keynes. We know he had Underlying Health problems but there is still still is some uncertainty about how he fell ill. We dont know how yet the individual patient caught coronavirus but we do know that the individual had been travelling. However, he didnt meet any of the criteria for isolation when he arrived at the hospital. These are the current numbers. So
far21,306 to four these are the current numbers. So far 21,306 to four people have been tested for coronavirus, 206 of those tested for coronavirus, 206 of those tested were positive. In england, 184 cases have been confirmed, in scotla nd 184 cases have been confirmed, in scotland there are 16, four in Northern Ireland and two in wales. These are still quite small numbers compared with other countries, in europe for example, italy i think is up europe for example, italy i think is up to around 4000 but nevertheless it is progressing and i think as professor witty said to the Health SelectCommittee Last week, that really the chances of the uk missing an epidemic now are slim to nil. There are a few anecdotal reports of panic buying, certainly sales of hand sanitiser have gone up but retail experts say there is absolutely no need. Stock will only run down if people start to unnecessarily buy in bulk. It now seems that in one way or another coronavirus is likely have an impact on the lives of all of us. It is worth pointing out that for the vast
majority of those unlucky enough to be affected, most of them will experience mild symptoms and make a full recovery. So, how is all this affecting the behaviour of shoppers in manchester . Has it changed the way i live . Not really. We have got some extra hand gel and soap because we are washing our hands more and youre washing hands more . we are washing our hands more and youre washing hands more . I dont like to touch the door handles, i do it with a tissue. And maybe this is a sign of things to come. A big day of sporting action disrupted. At twickenham, warnings were clear outside the ground as england took on wales in the 6 nations. And the scotla nd on wales in the 6 nations. And the scotland womens rugby match against france was cancelled because a player tested positive for the virus. Discussions will take place about events being held behind closed doors if things worsen. Officials warn that these are still
early days. It is just too early to be able to assess the full impact of coronavirus. Dominic hughes, bbc news, manchester. Well, the family of the patient who died in Milton Keynes having tested positive for covid 19 have released a statement. They say this whole nightmare is not something that we are our love when asked for. As we are in isolation currently we cannot arrange for him to be put to rest and with all the activity that is going on around, with regards to the concerns of everyone, we cannot grieve him as we would wish to. Seven used to bring you from Health Officials in Northern Ireland who say that three more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Northern Ireland. They say that the new cases bring the total number of people with covid 19 total number of people with covid 19 to seven in the region. The latest three cases are all adults who had recently travelled from italy and are linked to a previously confirmed positive case. That is the news from
Health Officials in Northern Ireland, or three more confirmed cases of coronavirus. Well, doctor Alison Prichard is the dean of the faculty of intensive Care Medicine and earlier she explained how hospitals are preparing to cope with an increase in patients. We are obviously very concerned about how we will be able to cope especially if the number of patients who require Critical Care services reaches our require Critical Care services reaches oui woist require Critical Care services reaches our worst prediction. We are planning for a worst case scenario. But the problem is, we have had either little or no increase in Critical Care services of a number of years which means even under normal circumstances we struggle to meet demand. So we see routine operations cancelled on a regular basis. But we are planning, everyone is looking at how we can expand our Critical Care services to ensure that patients remain the focus of what we do and i would like to reassure patients that if you do end
up reassure patients that if you do end up needing to come into hospital or require Critical Care services that you will receive the highest quality of care. Are you able to give this any more detail, when you talk about preparing for a worst case scenario, what does that mean in terms of numbers . 0k, we cannot predict how many more beds we can create because it will depend on individual organisations. We cant expand within the Critical Care units and what individual organisations will be looking at is other areas in the hospital that meet the safety requirements where patients could be cared for if the numbers outweigh the number of Critical Care beds we currently have which it no doubt will. And what happens if you get cases on an intensive care unit of people who are very ill . How do people who are very ill . How do people self isolate on a unit like that . Well, in hospitalwe dont
talk about self isolation because if we have positive patient within Critical Care, they will be isolated, we will isolate them in a side room if possible or we may look, if we have more than one patient who test positive, then we cohort them into one area. We look after a number of patients in one area. So, that is how we would isolate the patients away from patients who are not positive. And you talked about it being a struggle now to run intensive care are given the lack of resources. What more would you like to see from government to help you through what we now anticipate to be an epidemic from what the deputy chief medical officer has said . There is very little, i think, officer has said . There is very little, ithink, that officer has said . There is very little, i think, that the government can do at the moment to help us through this epidemic. What is
important for us to do as professionals and Health Care Organisations is to make sure we put the patient first, we look after our staff so that we cannot only look after patients during this incident but continue to look after patients when this is all over. But i hope but this does demonstrate, that we need a timely review of critical ca re resources once need a timely review of Critical Care resources once this is over and the rest of the uk, like has already happened in wales. And that was doctor alison picard happened in wales. And that was doctor alison pica rd speaking happened in wales. And that was doctor alison picard speaking to me earlier. British passengers stuck on a cruise ship off the coast of california are preparing themselves for a number of days or even weeks in isolation. 21 people on board the grand princess had tested positive for coronavirus and 19 of them are crewmembers. From San Francisco, sophie long reports. A large, empty berth. This is where the grand princess
should have docked today. Instead, it remains stranded off the coast of california. The lives of those on board left in limbo. When we get moved to this facility, we will all be tested. And those that dont test positive may be able to leave. We are trusting in god that something good will come out of theirs. We dont know what it is and im going to test negative and get to go home and get some treatment. Testing kits lowered onto the cruise ship revealed 21 people on board have coronavirus. We are taking all measures necessary to see to the health of the americans and those involved on the grand princess and, just as importantly, to protect the health of the American Public and prevent the spread of the disease through communities in this country. Confirmation they were at risk of catching the virus that killed thousands around the world came from news channels,
not the ships captain. You may have heard this on the news by the media already and we apologise, but we were not given advanced notice of this announcement by the us federal government. It would have been our preference to be the first to make this news available to you. These individuals will be notified after their test results as quickly as possible. Michelle bisells mumjackie is on the cruise liner with her friend margaret. Both women are in their 70s. Michelle wants the government to act quickly and bring them home. When they were told that there were 21 cases of the coronavirus on the ship and most of them were staff, that is when reality hit, last night, and she was very tearful on the phone. The ships medical crew say they are working to address Urgent Health needs and one person may have to be airlifted to hospital. Theyve come closer to shore to make it easier to get supplies on board, but, ultimately, thousands
of people still have no idea where they are going or when they will get there. Sophie long, bbc news, San Francisco. In the last few minutes mike pence has said the administration has distributed more than 1 has said the administration has distributed more than1 million coronavirus test and that it hopes to expand access to the test to every american in coming weeks. Our corresponding peter bowes is in los angeles. He is strikingly different tone from what he was saying a couple of days ago. He is and that is certainly progress from what was being said a few days ago and really a different message to the one that we have been hearing from President Trump who said about 24 hours ago that a test kit was available to Anyone Around the United States that wa nted Anyone Around the United States that wanted to be tested and that simply was not the case and it still isnt, it will be several weeks before a test kit is available to everyone
and in any case, not Everyone Needs to be tested right now. We are getting quite a lot of mixed m essa 9 es getting quite a lot of mixed messages and other sea quite confusing messages from the administration and the experts that have gathered in washington although the mouthpieces have been the president and the Vice President , because people are increasingly saying that they dont know what to do and they are being frustrated by this. And in the meantime, over three and a half thousand people stranded on the cruise ship of San Francisco who learned that there was coronavirus on the ship through the media rather than through their captain and that in itself is a big job to have test kits delivered to them yes. That was another huge problem with communication, it beggars belief really that those people waiting in those cabin should have to turn on the television to discover that 21 people on that vote, on that ship, had tested
positive and the captain came over the tannoy a few minutes later to explain and to apologise to people saying that the federal government had not told the ships operators about those positive tests. And the wait continues, because now all the people are being tested and as tess had started but you can imagine it will take some time, because initially only 45 people were tested and the kits had to be dropped on board from helicopters via the us coastguard. It is quite an operation and when it is completed and they have the results, we understand that the ship will be allowed to dock at a non commercial port somewhere on the west coast of america, but we do not know where we dont really know what will happen from that point, apart from the fact that any members of crew that have tested positive, will be quarantined on board and passengers will be held somewhere unsure. And overall, peter, how would you characterise the response
of the administration to the threat . Well, increasingly, it is being characterised as a confusing response to say the least at the president especially has made many many public statements about this. He was talking about the test kit and described them as perfect test kits and then made a very bizarre comparison with the letter, the transcription, which has been understood to be a reference to the transcription of the phone call he had with the ukrainian president which led to his impeachment. Frankly, a bizarre comparison and one that frankly doesnt help many people. Ok, peter we have to leave it there. Peter bows there in los angeles. A reminder now that in the past few minutes three more coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Northern Ireland bringing the total there are 27 and two 209 across the uk. Let others have a reminder of the global
situation. Over 3500 people have no doubt from the disease. Italy is the worst affected european country with nearly 6000 cases. The number of deaths has risen to 233 and it is currently reporting more deaths per day from the virus than any other country in the world. Another country in the world. Another country which has been badly hit is iran where there have been nearly 6000 confirmed cases, but the unofficial number is thought to be much higher. Officials there say that they have reached 145. And look now at some of the latest virus related stories round the world. Addresses of people would not be allowed to leave or enter the province of lombardy and in 11 other

Meanwhile, the pope will stream his sunday blessing from inside the vatican and not in st Peters Square due to the coronavirus. The measures are being put in place to avoid people gathering at large events. The pope has been suffering recently from the cold. A man who caught coronavirus on a cruise ship that was quarantined outsidejapan has died. The passenger who has not yet been named was among more than 600 of those who became infected on the diamond princess liner. His death yesterday brings the death toll from the ship to seven. A hotel. A hotel in china has claptrap in 70 people inside. The hotel on the south west coast, it is not yet clear what caused the collapse. Almost half the people trapped in the wreckage have been rescued. Time
for a look at the sport. The house got off to a great start after Anthony Watson scored this try early on before england built a decent lead going into half time. Wells hit back immediately after the break and manu tuilagi got himself on the scoresheet before being sent off for a dangerous tackle late on. Wales scored twice after that to ensure a bonus point but it was not north as england edged it 33 points to 30. You can see just what it meant tojurgen klopp as he watched his side secure a 22nd Successive League win at anfield. Callum wilson opened the scoring for the visitors before goals from Mohamed Salah and sadio mane secured the victory. We have 82 points which is really nice and now we have to fight, carry on fighting on tuesday and monday and saturday i think. That is how it is now. Yes. The new chancellor will deliver his first budget this week with all eyes on what measures he will announce to help people through the coronavirus outbreak. One separate expected move is the scrapping of the so called temp one tax from february next year. 5 temp one tax from february next yea r. 5 vat temp one tax from february next year. 5 vat is currently added under eu rules. They say that removing the levy will make tampons 7p cheaper. Since 2015 women in the uk have paid around £62 million in tax on sanitary products, most of which is passed on by the government to charities. Our Political Correspondent chris mason explained the position the government was in. This is not possible why we were in the European Union and is not
possible now. Legally we have left the eu but in no practical sense as we are still a member and bound by its rules and obligations. This will not happen until the 1st of january next year, the end of the transition period, the point where brexit will be properly completed. The argument of the government is it would have liked to have done this earlier but it could not come have been this rate of vat attached to sanitary products since 1973. The argument they have made in recent years is that the money generated from this tax was given to womens charities, the curiosity is that some of those Charities Say that they welcome the decision to get rid of the tax, there have been campaigns about so called period property, but if you are the funding gap for their own charities as a result of the revenue stream coming from the tax is no longer available. We have known for a that this would happen, because this was attached to a finance bill a couple of years ago. The government always in the countdown to budgets likes to be
released some of its announcements andi released some of its announcements and i guess on International Womens day, this is a savvy one to talk about. That was chris mason there. After the wettest february on record the association of british insurers says the total number of pay outs to people hit by flooding would be around £360 million. The course cove rs around £360 million. The course covers damage from storms here and dennis. Here is katie prescott. The long process of rebuilding begins. Communities like these in ironbridge are helping businesses get back on their feet after devastating winter floods. If it wasnt for the people in this community, the people of ironbridge, coalbrookdale, further on into telford, even as far as far away as australia, we wouldnt be in this situation we are in now. We started trading this morning. Weve been busy all day and its all local people, its all the people that came out to supporters and we are genuinely humbled, by everything everybodys done. But theres still a long and expensive journey ahead. The Insurance Industry is also counting the cost. More than 3,000 households have made flood claims, for an average of £32,000. The cost of clearing up and dealing with the aftermath of ciara and dennis is a £360 million. Thats more than tripled the damage from floods which hit the midlands and South Yorkshire last november, but still relatively small compared to the cost of three successive storms, desmond, eva and frank, which hit in december 2015. They cost £1. 3 billion. Insurers expect storms like this to result in millions of pounds worth of damage. Its what theyre used to, its what they plan for and, actually, the true cost is not going to be down for many months, as those badly flooded properties get a chance to dry out and we can assess the full extent of the damage. Several large insurers have recently said how winterflood claims are hitting their businesses. And with Climate Change expected to increase the number of floods in the uk, managing this risk is only going to become more expensive. Katie prescott, bbc news. As you see, the front does make pretty Good Progress overnight. Eventually, come the end of the night, it will be down around east anglia and the far south east. And even following on behind the combination of cloud, some showers and some wind will help keep many of us frost free to start the new day. Early risers mayjust see the very last of that rain
across east anglia an dthe south east, but the day for the most part is going to be a combination of decent sunny spells for some, but there will be plenty of showers rattling in on quite a noticeable breeze.
