The virus originates in china, where 26 people have died so far and hundreds more have been infected. People are being stopped from leaving the city of wuhan, the centre of the outbreak, and there are severe travel restrictions in several other cities. The chief medical officer for england Chris Whitty Met with the governments Cobra Emergency Committee earlier. He reassured people that the uk is well prepared if a case was to be confirmed. We think that there is a fair chance we may get some cases over time. Of course, this depends on whether this continues over a long time or whether this turns out to be something which is brought under control relatively quickly by the considerable efforts of the chinese government. I think we should definitely see this as a marathon, not a sprint and we need to have our entire response based on that principle. That is the chief medical officerfor england. Principle. That is the chief medical officer for england. We are going to talk to someone who is living and working in wuhan. Mike beharrell is an Ice Hockey Team coach working with children in wuhan. He moved to the city in april last year. Thank you so much for talking to us. How are you doing and what are you doing with your time . Actuallyjust spending some time in the apartment and pretty much Just Practising spending some time in the apartment and pretty muchJust Practising my chinese, so that is about it. For the moment, not going out. They have told us to stay off the streets, so we have done that and it is basically just we have done that and it is basicallyjust income. We have done that and it is basically just income. So we have done that and it is basicallyjust income. So you have been staying at home for how long . Just staying home. Been staying at home for how long . Just staying home. They notified us, the company i work for notified yesterday so i have been. I went and got groceries yesterday morning as soon as they told us, in case there is a little bit of a panic when it comes to food supplies, but it was not too bad, so since yesterday morning, just staying home and staying off the streets now. But to give out enough for how long . How long do you think youre going to be confined to your flat . For sure i know we are told that we are staying away from work until at least the 3lst away from work until at least the 31st of the month, so at least very few days anyway. We will see what happens after that. And you said that supplies were reasonably well available. Give us a sense of what is everyone doing what youre doing . With anyone frantic . Where people out in the supermarkets are stocking 7 out in the supermarkets are stocking up . Yeah, there are definitely people going out. I was out early as soon as they told me and they had already set up at the Police Checks with the temperature scans, so they are screening people before they go into the stores and that was up. That is a slow process, a lot of people trying to get in. Then the supermarket itself was sort of fill, but everything was orderly, everything was good, there was lots to be had yesterday, so there was really no concerns. It is religious, getting enough that i dont have to go back out for a few days. Yes. It is really good. It is amid frustration, how would you describe it . This is an amazing place, a wonderful city, great people. Ijust feel sad that it has happened for the city, for country because it is, honest to god, a very good place, so it came on pretty quick. And your wife went back to sweden, where youre from. Just by chance, a couple of weeks ago, by definition, youre going to be a part for some time, it would seem . Yeah. It was sort of a little bit lucky that she had gone back at that time, so the news broke, we heard that there was a little bit of a virus in the city, but nothing to worry about and then she left about ten or 12 days ago, almost two weeks now. Yeah, she was fortu nate to almost two weeks now. Yeah, she was fortunate to get out when she did. It is really good of you to talk to us. Thank you so much for your time. I will let you get back to practising your chinese, as you say. Thank you very much indeed, good to talk to you. Mike, an ice hockey coach who has lived in wuhan for around nine months. Now confined to his flat. Lets discuss potential vaccines, perhaps. Sarah gilbert is a professor of vaccinology at oxford universit, and joins me now from our oxford studio professor, thank you for your time. Im interested in your broad reaction. I hope you could hear or who was in wuhan. What is your take on his expense and how the chinese authorities are handling this . On his expense and how the chinese authorities are handling thi57m on his expense and how the chinese authorities are handling this . It is going to be very difficult to contain this outbreak now. A lot of people are infected, it has spread widely and we know that people can be infected with the virus and remain remained well for some days and potentially transmitted to other people, so i think it is going to be quite a while before anybody is really allowed to have around freely in the infected cities. We are speaking to you because youre partly pa rt speaking to you because youre partly part of a team that has developed a vaccine for a similar condition, as i understand it, perhaps you can explain what you have been working on . Where working together with a Small Company based in oxford and happy working on a vaccine against another firm of coronavirus, mainly in the saudi arabia, but there have been outbreaks in another country as well. It is a very similar virus. The vaccine that we have been working on has been in development for a couple of years now. We had any Clinical Trial with very good results. We are able to show that the volunteers that to be vaccinated ina the volunteers that to be vaccinated in a Clinical Trial developed a strong immune response to this after a single dose. That is important because if we need one that can work on this new coronavirus, we need a vaccine that we can only give it once, giving lasting protection. Im so sorry to cut your. Were just going to cross another entirely. The appearance of harry dunn just there, just picking up. There are very strong words from the government on this. I have been talking with harrys family about what the next steps a re harrys family about what the next steps are and it will take some time to consider what the governments next step should be, but i am working on it with my colleagues in government and we are all determined to see justice done for harry. I cannot comment any further. We just heard the news last night. It was obviously very disappointing. I will be seeing what more can be done on behalf of harrys family. Can you give us an idea of how it has affected you and us and uk relations . I have expressed my disappointment on behalf of harrys family, but also really importantly for the local Community Near to the idf base, it is very concerning raf base this was a tragic Road Accident at its heart, which does u nfortu nately accident at its heart, which does unfortunately happen, all the time, right across the world, but in this instance, the fact that there is no justice for harry makes the pain of losing him so much worse and it is that that we have to address. What was the atmosphere like in that meeting . I do not want to comment on that meeting. It was, of course, very cordial. The relationship between the United Kingdom and United States is a very and long standing and very good relationship. And we do have frank conversations, but i do not want to comment on that meeting here. Thank you very much. Denied extradition when it has been requested by the uk, the . extradition when it has been requested by the uk, the . I cannot actually specifically answer that question at the moment, but as i say, following the news that they will not extradite that individual, i will be looking into there sorts of questions on behalf of harrys family. And what about talk of Julian Assange and that there would be some kind of swap . Julian Assange and that there would be some kind of swap . I cannot comment on that. There have been strong words from the home office, justice office, there is a key name missing there. Does borisjohnson wa nt missing there. Does borisjohnson want to say anything to the family . The Prime Minister is very much on the side of the family to see justice done for harry. All of us in government are working towards that end. How are you feeling at the moment . The meeting went well with andrea. There are points that she has given us that she is going to give away and has fully assured us that she will be working on and we are very much feeling supported by herand the are very much feeling supported by her and the rest of the government, so her and the rest of the government, so it is going to take time. It is not an overnight thing, but we will get there . We will get there. Forever if we have to. She will come back, we do not know when, but she will. She had to come back. It is the only bad thing to do. Diplomatic immunity or not, does not cover somebody to it is the only right thing to do. It is does not cover somebody under the law with what she has done. It does not matter how long it takes, ourfight has done. It does not matter how long it takes, our fight forjustice for harry will not waver. Our determination is probably stronger fiow determination is probably stronger now than it was before. If that is even possible. Yeah, we were not shocked, not at all. You have all said that he hoped that the meeting will be followed up by action do you feel that this is what is going to happen . Yes, we do. And he has fully assured us that the points that she has gone through with us today will be taken has gone through with us today will be ta ken forward has gone through with us today will be taken forward and will be followed up. They are fully on our side and they will push as much as they can to get justice for harry. What do you hope will happen . That she will come back. I do not understand how she can live with yourself and carry on with her life and drive. I do not understand that. She must be made of different stuff to us. She has to come back, one way or the other. Do you have any idea of what action could be taken to get that final in . We do, but we are leaving that with andrea. It is not for us to comment on. We do feel fully supported. That has a nice position to be in. Youre very strong to keep campaigning like this and to go through all these meetings. How do you guys hold it together . For harry. It really is that simple. We get asked that question so many times, but when youre fighting to achieve a promise that you made, it really is that simple. You make a promise to your children, you do not break it. You raise them to be honourable, so you honour them. If, under tragic circumstances like this, that you lose them. Hardy work as we are now calling it is probably the most rewarding thing we have ever done in out rewarding thing we have ever done in our lives harry work. It is relatively easy because it is your child had nothing will stop you from looking at for your child ever. The site was hoping you would run out of steam, as it were. If the us side we re steam, as it were. If the us side were hoping it would run out of steam. What would you say to that . No chance. It really is that simple. I will make it my lifework if we have to. We are well. They can beat me down as much as they want to. Every hurdle they the habit anyway so every hurdle they the habit anyway so far, whether it has been here or there, we have kept fighting and we managed to get over those hurdles. There has been talk about the action the uk government could take, but what about action you and your supporters might think about taking . This approach is already putting another blockade together at the raf base on the 2nd of february. I do not think we could even stop that fiow not think we could even stop that now if we tried after last nights news. The social media pages and beyond have gone. Erupted all over again. They are utterly disappointed, shocked. The amount of messages that we have had today in support has been come again, overwhelmingly immense. Well just keep fighting on. There are all sorts of things going on in support of us and lots of fundraising ideas still coming up. We and them will just keep going. What strength do you take from that support . So much. It would be hard to quantify it. It has just. It would be hard to quantify it. It hasjust. Apart from harry, it just keeps you going. Every positive message to get, every bit of support that you get from here, from the usa, there is a school in tanzania that have got all of their children wearing green headbands and they had sent photos through. It is literally worldwide. We have photos coming from new zealand, texas, australia, south africa, russia, you name it. They are coming from everywhere. That support is just they are coming from everywhere. That support isjust more fuel and more energy to keep going. If the secretary of state in the us was listening to you now, what would you say to him . He blocked that extradition. Just to find some humanity. To to the right thing. We have been saying it all along to anne sacoolas. She has not been listening, clearly. Mike pompeo has that ability to send her back. Just be humane. It has a difficult position for you. A fine line, surely, to walk, been cabinet yourself. What would you say to mike pompeo . I am here to represent harrys family. And getting justice for them is absolutely essential. This is a tragic Road Accident and there is no way that a diplomatic immunity was designed to allow somebody to leave a grieving f
