In america are currently seeing a decline in new daily cases of covid so bad in wisconsin, theyre now setting up a field hospital. And its 14 years since president bartlet sat behind the resolute desk, but fans of west wing are in for a pre election treat as the entire crew returns for one special episode. Hello, im
Laura Trevelyan
in washington. Christian fraser is in london. The fbi says its uncovered an extraordinary plot to abduct michigans democratic governor, gretchen whitmer. This spring, the governor was criticised by the president and his supporters when she imposed tight restrictions, to try and limit the spread of coronavirus. The fbi says the six men involved in the plot, had conducted surveillance on ms whitmers holiday home and planned to take her hostage before novembers president ial election. Their goal was to try her for treason. The men belonged to a milita called the michigan wolverine watchmen. On their website, they describe themselves as a well armed citizens group, formed to stand against tyranny, and anyone or anything that threatens to undermine our form of government. The fbi says it discovered the plot on social media where several members had talked about murdering tyra nts or taking a sitting governor. Two agents had worked their way into the group. The
District Attorney
andrew birge said the plot was at an advanced stage. Money had already been pooled to buy arms and explosives. Members of this conspiracy on two occasions conducted coordinated surveillance on the governors vacation home. Fox and croft in particular, according to the complaint, discussed detonating explosive devices to divert police to the area of the home. And fox even inspected the underside of a michigan highway bridge for places to seat an explosive. In the last hour, michigans democratic governor, gretchen whitmer, said
President Trump
s rhetoric has emboldened militia groups across america. Just last week, the president of the
United States
stood before the
American People
and refused to condemn
White Supremacists
and hate groups like these two michigan militia groups. Stand back and stand by, he told them. Stand back and stand by. Hate groups heard the president s words not as a rebuke but as a rallying cry, as a call to action. The governor, gretchen whitmer. Elizabeth neumann served as a
Senior Advisor
to the trump administation in the department of homeland security. She recently came out in support ofjoe biden. Elizabeth, its good to have you on the programme again, and i say again because youre with is only last week, you are warning us that this threat of home grown extremist groups and not been taken seriously enough by the trop administration, so enough by the trop administration, so how do you to find what you have heard today for michigan . M so how do you to find what you have heard today for michigan . It is wonderful the fbi was able to intercept this and forward it, im glad the governor is safe port it. But this is what we have been concerned about, that there are extremist groups that are intentional and plotting to cause acts of violence. Their image to overthrow the us government. And they see violence as a legitimate means to theirand. They see violence as a legitimate means to their and. And while there are those in the federal government and in state local governments who are aware and actually working on these threats, it would be really great if those in leadership whose voices seem to have an effect on these groups would very clearly, very consistently condemn these types of actions, and the problem that we have seen from people at the president and from people on the republican party, quite frankly, who have not been very loudly condemning the president s rhetoric is that it is seen as tacit endorsement. It emboldens, it is a rallying cry to them, it increases recruitment and it increases the likelihood that, within those groups who join militias orjoin the
White Nationalist
movement, not all of them are planning on violence, but it. The them are planning on violence, but it the more people you add to that mix, the higher likelihood there are people that are going to commit acts of violence. When the president we did when he did in april, liberate michigan, meaning liberate it from the lockdown, how much did that encourage these groups, that kind of language . When i read the indictment today, it does seem i read the indictment today, it does seem really interesting the timing of when this plotting started to occui. Of when this plotting started to occur. Im sure we will learn more as things are prosecuted, but there does seem to be a very uncomfortable iiexus does seem to be a very uncomfortable nexus between the president s tweets and militia action that we saw. We saw the protests that happen in june, at the state capital, and this particular group who decided they needed to do something more than just protest and make this really more a plot to kidnap the governor. Imean, more a plot to kidnap the governor. I mean, when you read the indictment here, elizabeth, got people protruding, firearms training, improvised explosive devices, they had a taser which they were going to subdue the governor with it was pretty sophisticated. These were not just some guys who were discussing what to do on social media. They cased out the underside of the bridge. And its whatever my did me, we are 25 years on from oklahoma. This sort of had a feeling of that kind of plot. Yes, except with mcveigh, it was a small group. This seemed to have more people involved. It does seem, reading the indictment, perhaps the invited others tojoin indictment, perhaps the invited others to join them and they seemed to recognise that they did not want to recognise that they did not want to go there, so, good, but it is. This is what their ideology calls for, so if you consider yourself a
White Nationalist
or antigovernment group, your ideology calls for the eventual overthrow of the government. Now, what you find is a lot of people love to come and have this conversation but they are not actually carry out acts of violence, but there is a small minority that do want to carry out those acts of violence, and thats what we are particular concerned about. It is very important that voices that they look to with respect, and they seem to admire the president , its really important for those voices to condemn this activity. It does not stop it, but it certainly makes it easier for law enforcement, given a smaller number of people that are adhering to these causes. Elizabeth neumann, thank you very much. We have just seen pictures there of backin have just seen pictures there of back in april, people in the statehouse, in fact, some of them came with weapons in the statehouse. And that was a big story, wasnt it, backin and that was a big story, wasnt it, back in the spring . It was absolutely expert and airy when that happened. Imagine, people with arms going into a statehouse, which is the symbol of democracy in america, and there you have people with weapons trying to take it over. Donald trump is back in the oval office, a week since testing positive for covid i9, and itching to get back on the campaign trail. But there are still plenty of questions about his health and about his temperament. This monster that was on stage with mike pence, who destroyed her last night, by the way. But this monster, she says, no, no, there wont be fracking, there wont be this. Everything she said is a lie. The president has refused take part in the second televised debate next thursday, which the commission announced would instead be a virtual debate. Joe biden, in his statement, accused the president of ducking his accountability, saying voters should have the chance to ask questions of both candidates. Mr trump has asked for what would have been a town hall debate to be moved to the 22nd, the date of the third and final debate, so that audience members have a chance to question the candidates directly. Lets speak to white house columnist at the hill, niall stanage. It is good to have you with us. Can we just talk about his temperament at the moment . Because there he is calling
Kamala Harris
a monster, he called her a communist. This is the sitting centre of the us senate. He is putting pressure on dill bar to arrest some of his political opponent. He is putting pressure on bill barr. Are there some republicans asking questions about his ontology, about his demeanour . Yes, i think so. To describe mr trump as irascible, it is a bit like saying water is wet. But it does seem saying water is wet. But it does seem to be at a particular high pitched right now was to buy think partly because he appears to be losing this election campaign, but obviously has struggles with the coronavirus also, to put a question mark over his health, and these are things he does not like being put questions about. Lets talk about the debate, becausejoe biden, obviously, was looking forward to the town hall debate. He is more empathetic when he is with people, isnt he . He interacts with
People Better
than donald trump. Donald trump is better in the sort of standing on the debate stage, taking on his opponent, sorry surprise the president ducked out of this, particularly where he is in the polls . Sarr you surprised. That is the important point, the la st that is the important point, the last one. Donald trump needs to change the trajectory of this race. The debates would potentially do that. The first debate did not go well for mr trump, but the actual fa ct of well for mr trump, but the actual fact of the debate, it creates the kind of focal point where you can have a
Game Changing
moment. In that regard, i was surprised that he initially seemed to push away the idea of a virtual debate, but then to your point, christian, he does like the gladiatorial stocking and starting around the stage element, and obviously you cannot do that in and obviously you cannot do that in a virtual debate. Youre much more open to the moderators cut you off and other restrictions like that. And the
Senate Majority
leader, mitch mcconnell, has said he has been avoiding the white house because they dont take covid i9 restrictions seriously for we know that covid is spreading like wildfire in the west wing. Is that a sign of republicans breaking ranks a bit . I think it is a sign of republican concern about what is exactly going on, and the white house, the tally of people who have been infected keeps rising. And there are concerns among, i should add, the press corps as well about the restrictions or the particles that are in place here. It is a problem, and i think mr mcconnell was subtly, somewhat subtly, raising that stoplight raising that stoplight niall stanage, thank you for being with as he was saying, the president does not have much of a chance of changing this race, that was set on the show yesterday by franklins frank lu ntz. If the race days has it is right now, donald trump loses. The problem for him is. A recipe for failure. Print is right. He needs an audience, and there is no debtor audience, and there is no debtor audience than a president ial debate. Vice president ial debates dont usually shake up the race for the white house. But the face off between
Kamala Harris
and mike pence on wednesday night was watched by 22. 6

more than viewed 2016s veep debate. By contrast, the first chaotic president ial debate drew a smaller audience than the first one in 2016. In tone, it was much better than the

we witnessed last week. Coronavirus and
Donald Trumps
handling of the pandemic were, of course, omnipresent. But while they did finally get to the issues, we are not entirely sure the audiences got the answers they might have been expecting. Its called the art of the pivot. Are you and joe biden, if somehow you win this election, going to pack the
Supreme Court
to get your way . Joe and i are very clear. The
American People
are voting right now, and it should be their decision about who will serve on this most important body for a lifetime. Thank you, senator harris. People are voting right now, theyd like to know if you and joe biden are going to pack the
Supreme Court
if you dont get your way in this nomination. Lets talk about packing. You once again gave a nonanswer, joe biden gave a nonanswer. Im trying to answer. The people deserve a straight answer. Do you believe, as the

Climate Change
has made wildfires bigger, hotter and more deadly, and have made hurricanes wetter, slower and more damaging . The climate is changing. The issue is, whats the cause and what do we do about it . President trump has made it clear that were going to continue to listen to science. Now, joe biden and
Kamala Harris
would put us back in the paris climate accord. Theyd impose the green new deal. That was mike pence and

American People

Kamala Harris
did standing damage to the
Vice President
. And i dont think mike pence did anything harmful in a minute away to
President Trump
, so all and all, i would call it a draw. It is interesting, ron, that there was so much more interest in this debate compared to the
Vice President
ial debate in 2016. What do you attribute that to, may be too interested in the new face of

If we just take englands figures alone, another 524 patients were admitted on tuesday. Thats up by 10 in today, and the total number being treated now is around 3,000, so it is rising, but then if you put that into context, if we go back to the end of march, beginning of april, 3,000 patients every single day, new patients, were being admitted. Also, its important to note and bear in mind this is not widespread around the country, so the north west, the north east, yorkshire and the midlands have far greater numbers of patients in hospital. Our
Health Correspondent lauren moss on the continuing concerns across the uk about the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Similar pattern in the
United States as well. We are going to get to now. The front cover of this weeks
Time Magazine really is one for the ages the white house cast in the role of covid super spreader. And theyre not the only magazine to hone in on the administration handling of the pandemic. For the first time in its 208 year history, the new england journal of medicine one of the worlds most prestigious medicaljournals has taken a political stand. The editorial, titled dying in a leadership vacuum, said this. Dr eric rubin is the editor of the new england journal of medicine. Thank you very much for being with us. Thank you very much for being with us. Tell us why so political . Why did you take a decision to go political now . I guess we dont see it as political, we see it as a question of laying out facts. Effects are just so damning. Any country have done a really good job in this, the
United States which has more resources than almost any of them have been completely incapable of dealing with this outbreak. And when you look across the country at the moment, everything is going in the wrong way, with the exception of two states. I think everybody else is either staying where it is or the daily cases are going up, and you look at wisconsin, a state like wisconsin where they are having to set upa wisconsin where they are having to set up a field hospital. Yes. This is, we are getting back into the early days of the outbreak, in different areas, but i think certain areas are feeling the kinds of stresses that new york felt early on, for example, and newjersey, and it is. We have not learned the lessons of the early part of the pandemic. The former director of the cdc said today that
President Trump and
Vice President mike pence have their knees on the neck of the
Public Health community. That is an expert in every statement, isnt it . I had not heard that, but it is pretty graphic and i think a fair description that is pretty extraordinary. And you see any way in which the leadership of this country is begin to take the virus more seriously as we all head indoors, the weather gets colder and there is more potentialfor it to spread . It is so hard in this new cycle to see what is going on, because the number of events is crazy, but i think it is important to keep in mind that we know what works to control this virus could go its been applied in other places and has worked, and has been applied in some parts of the us. Simple
Public Health measures masks and social distancing and context tracing and testing. And we are just simply not doing those things, so i think as long as we dont do them, were going to continue to be in trouble unless we get a big technological advance like a vaccine. Dr ruben comeau youre just talking to ron christie about regeneron and what the president was saying about it. I want to play it the clip because i want to get your thoughts on it. I think im doing better, where the point where i want to do better, where the point where i want todoa better, where the point where i want to do a rally tonight, i wanted to do one last night. I got a case, i think it was regeneron that was response before it, because of that, it was sort of like almost a gift from heaven. Theres a lot of people excited about regeneron, but do we know that thatis about regeneron, but do we know that that is what has the president feeling better at the moment . It could be steroids. How easy for it to say when its a mix of drugs. Could be steroids. How easy for it to say when its a mix of drugsm isa to say when its a mix of drugsm is a truly difficult to extrapolate from a single case. And in our journal, we really publish case reports because they just journal, we really publish case reports because theyjust dont tell you enough about what is happening. There are some promising things out there, the monoclonal antibodies like the regeneron drug, and there are others that could be exciting. We have no data on these, though, we only have anecdotes what
President Trump is telling. And i think it is an illustration of the fact that our leadership really hasnt been clued into what scientific thinking is. It is really a series of opinions rather than facts, and i think this is another one. I hope that this is a magic bullet, but we just implead dont know that yet. 0k, dr eric rubin, its really good to be with you. For years, fans of the west wing have been begging the shows creator aaron sorkin to bring back the iconic drama. Now, fans of cj, josh and president bartlet can rejoice. During a commercial break in last nights debate, this happened. Thank you. What did i miss . Oh, yes the west wing is back dont tell my wife, she will self combust. Its all designed to raised funds and awareness for when we all vote, an organisation spear headed by former
First Lady Michelle Obama that works to get more people registered to vote. And this, while it is not a new episode, it is an old episode, is going to be keenly anticipated. Hello, good evening. Earlier today, we had temperatures into the high teens across or southern parts of the uk. For all of us, though, in the next few days, as we head to the weekend, it will be feeling colder colder by day and colder by night as well with sunshine and some showers. A good day today for chasing rainbows, as we saw here in scotland, where theres been the bulk of the showers. Further south, the low cloud has been breaking up. It did take a while to eventually thin and break here in cambridgeshire and across some other southeastern parts of england. But clear skies are following on through this evening and for much of the night. Further north, in scotland, we see cloud coming in, rain too as the wind picks up, blowing that rain down into
Northern England as north wales by the end of the night. Ahead of it, with clearer skies, its going to be colder than it was last night. Could be down to five or 6 degrees, maybe a touch colder than that in the glens of scotland, where, after the overnight rain, in the glens of scotland, where, after the overnight rain, we are seeing sunshine and showers following in. That rain band moving south, away from
Northern England and wales, into southern england by the afternoon, by which time the rain could be a bit heavier. You can see the rush of showers following on behind. Some of these will be heavy with some hail and thunder, particularly in the northwest of the uk, where the winds will be stronger. And it will feel colder. Just look at the temperatures in the afternoon. Typically 11 degrees on friday afternoon. Maybe making 15 in the south east ahead of that rain. That rain will give us a wet and the day. And then its cooler air, right the way down across the country, all the way from iceland, and a north to northwesterly airflow,
High Pressure to the west of the uk, low pressure to the east as well. Thatll feed in a mixture of sunshine and showers over the weekend. Saturday, the bulk of the showers from northern and
Western Areas. Some of these could be heavy as well. For much of the day,
Eastern England likely to be dry with some sunshine at times. But there will be a chilly wind blowing on saturday and those temperatures still no better than 12 or 13 degrees. For the second half of the weekend, its going to be a cold start, the winds strongest down the eastern side of scotland, north sea coasts of england and here, were more likely to catch a few showers. Many other areas may well be dry with some sunshine at times, and it wont be as windy. Its not really getting much warmer. Again, 12 or 13 degrees. And those temperatures may not change a great deal early next week as well. It does look cloudier and wetter, i think, on monday. Some more wet weather continuing into tuesday, particularly across the southeast of the uk. Youre watching bbc news with me,

We check in with the three british teachers stuck in isolation in italy because for two months, all their coronavirus tests come back positive. Also in the programme. Mike pence heads to arizona, trying to defend the republican stronghold, but he has company. Bothjoe biden and
Kamala Harris are visiting today as well. Plus, interviews with all the parties involved in the tiktok video that has propelled
Fleetwood Mac to a new generation. Finding out that youve got coronavirus can be really unsettling, but especially so for three british men in their twenties who have been held in covid quarantine in italy for seven weeks. The trio all tested positive for coronavirus on august 17, at which point italian authorities put them into quarantine. Now, seven weeks later, the tests for will castle, rhys james and quinn pachesny are all still coming back positive and they are still there in isolation in florance. They wont be freed under italian rules until they test negative twice at least 2a hours apart. Quinn joins us now along with dr chris smith to explain we hope whats happening with the repeated positive tests. Let me start with you, quinn. Lets get the back story. You texted positive back in august tested positive. What have your doctors told you about how long this could go on for . Weve not been told any information about how long this could go on for. Itsjust an indefinite time scale, so a sort of in the beginning, we were urged that we can only be isolated for 14 days. And itjust continued once we were told that we had to required to negative tests. What impact is that having on your
Mental Health . It must be terrible. Yeah, i think weve all three done a good job at trying to create a facade that in here, we are ok. Weve tried to keep each others spirits up and try and make it possible, but starting week eight, its possible to maintain that now. Where are you now . In italy, there are covid hospitals which are just like a hotel where hospitals for coronavirus patients. Doctor smith, lets bring you in. What do you think is going on . Well, judging by how queen is talking, hes feeling fine. He doesnt look like someone whos acutely affected with coronavirus like someone whos acutely affected with coronavirus quinn. I think this is a consequence of how these tests work. The tests right now are what we call pcr or preliminary
Chain Reaction tests. When you put a swa b
Chain Reaction tests. When you put a swab into a person, you collect samples from their nose and throat which contain, if theyre infected, the virus. They are then taken to a lobar oratory, and from those samples are extracted the material of the virus and fed into the pcr reaction a laboratory. Its like a reaction a laboratory. Its like copy. Reaction a laboratory. Its like a photocopy. It makes millions of copies of the genetic material. Those genetic copies are then read looking for a very specific sequence that corresponds to a bit of specifically the new coronavirus. If thats found, then a light bulb goes on and it says this is a positive test. What that doesnt tell you is that what is there is actually viable virus. And it might well be, and probably is the case because there are other cases document it like this, one poorwoman there are other cases document it like this, one poor woman who was separated from her baby for two months under similar circumstances. Whats probably going on is there are bits of the genetic material of the virus that are there. They are being detected and because of the sense of the technique is so sensitive, its picking it up and causing it positive calling it positive. Theres probably an excruciating amount of the virus if any, not enough to pass along a excruciatingly tiny amount. Almost certainly if we try to grow the virus and transmit virus from you to another individual, we would be able to do it. Doctor smith, how long until quinn and his friends test negative and go home . We dont know. There are cases of this happening, it certainly the case that this happens. Its unusual for three people side by side like this to have that happen, and that really highlights to me one other possibility, which is how reliable is the test that they are using . Id really like to have a look at the raw data coming off of those tests and make sure theres not something going on with the test and the way the information samples are being collected and processed. If the rules say you have to have two consecutive negative tests, they will say by the letter of the law, youve got to stay there. Its in common sense. I youve got to stay there. Its in common sense. | have youve got to stay there. Its in common sense. I have to confess, im supposed to be flying to florence. They brought test in uk citizens and i read your story, and i cancelled this morning because i think if im asymptomatic and this goes on for weeks, i dont know if ill ever go back to work. What are you supposed to do . Does anything reassure you . It reassures us and the fact that were not contagious and we cant pass the virus on to people. Thats our main concern, but weve sort of known that for weeks now, just judging off all the other countries. Itjust makes judging off all the other countries. It just makes the whole judging off all the other countries. Itjust makes the whole situation even more itjust makes the whole situation even more frustrating that were here completely aware of whats happening. The lax two weeks when we had our pcr tests, weve had our results delayed because they say the machines are broken, so that fills us machines are broken, so that fills us with confidence that these tests are accurate. Itjust us with confidence that these tests are accurate. It just adds the frustration of this situation. Quinn, we are so sorry for this for you and we hope these tests come back negative soon. Keep in touch, and doctor smith, thank you very much indeed for your expertise. Arizona has only voted for a democratic president ial candidate once in the last 70 years, for bill clinton in 1996. But this year the state is up for grabs as migration from california, a growing latino population and shifting attitudes among white voters all change the states demographics. President trump was due to be holding rallies in the state this week, but they were cancelled after mr trump became infected with teh coronavirus. With the coronavirus. If we are to believe what the recent poll numbers are showing us, they show that the
Biden Harris Campaign is ahead of the trump prince campaign. A recent
New York New York times paul says. That is huge, as you mentioned. Arizona for decades has been dependently republican. They have been solid red with the exception of one election in 1996 when bill clinton squeaks by a victory. Its been since 1952, so to say if election day comes an arizona turns blue would be historic would bea turns blue would be historic would be a major understatement. What seems to be the number one issue in the state . Right now, i have to tell you that the coronavirus pandemic obviously has become front and ce ntre obviously has become front and centre when it comes to voters considering who they will be casting their ballots for. Again, according to polls, ijust want to say we all learned a lesson in 2016, however if we are going to take a look at them, theyre telling us that most of arizona isjust not happy with the way that
President Trump has dealt with the pandemic. Everything from what he has done and said in the la st what he has done and said in the last few weeks, to his behaviour since his diagnoses a few days ago. Theyre looking at this and saying they arent happy with the way the administration has handled the situation. You have to consider a large chunk of the voting bloc here is hispanics. Who has the pandemic affected the most . Minorities. So they are part of a population that has seen itself severely impacted by the pandemic, but you also have to ta ke the pandemic, but you also have to take a look at who is supporting joe biden and we are talking about women, biden and we are talking about women,
Younger Voters and biden and we are talking about women,
Younger Voters and hispanics. Again, these are groups that none of the campaigns can take for granted and as you mentioned, both of them are here in arizona today. Three of the top four candidates,
Vice President pence,
Vice President joe biden and senator
Kamala Harris, all three of them here in arizona today. That is particularly significant if you take into consideration the
Vice President ial debate, millions of americans watch on
Television Just la st americans watch on

Vice President pence and
Kamala Harris. After the
Electoral College votes for the white house, we are also looking at very tightly contested senate seats. I want to come back to the hispanic vote because you said is leaning towards biden. Hispanics in nevada see it differently. Very different. Arizona and nevada are close in terms of geographical proximity, but they are certainly not the same when it comes to who they vote for. Take into consideration arizona is a border state. That has a lot of different applications for a place like nevada. When you ask people what they care about here, clearly they hear about immigration care about immigration. From a financial and political standpoint as well as social. You have to think about how mexico is arizonas trading partner, numberone mexico is arizonas trading partner, number one times four. You also have to consider education. Just today, biden and harris were meeting tribal leaders here in arizona. These are issues you dont necessarily find it a place like nevada. Vanessa, its good to see you. Hospitality Industry is braced for even tighter restrictions next week from the government. Our north of england correspondent danny savage has been speaking to
People Living and working there. Within a few days, millions of people in
Northern England are likely to be living under even tighter restrictions. Pubs and restaurants could be shut down again. Well, if its going to get rid of this virus again, then, you know were going to have to put up with all of this. Its not working, is it . Weve been in lockdown and
Wearing Masks for weeks and weeks, and its still going up. For northern cities like leeds, manchester, liverpool and newcastle so much of their economy is built on hospitality. Theyve set themselves up as work and weekend destinations. To close that sector once was difficult, but to lose it again, say those in it, could be terminal. This popular, successful cafe will struggle if it is told to shut up shop. There is a very immediate wish, is to still be in business come christmas. And two or three weeks out of business now, we wont make it, to be brutal. The government has to come up with a
Hospitality Industry specific safety net. We have to be looked after here, we cant close the doors and be expected to bounce back again. The government now says theres too much exposure to coronavirus in the hospitality sector. Were seeing the infections rising in household settings rather than in the hospitality sector at the moment, so our major concern is if the government are forcing us to bring more restrictions in terms of closing public venues, that will force social activity underground into peoples houses. If there is a hospitality shut down in the north, the main question is how long will it be for . Danny savage, bbc news, leeds. Two weeks ago,

Keep up the good work. Heres that brilliant song. See you soon, nathan. Now there you go again. Hello there. Its just been a fairly mild couple of days for many of us, but things are set to change over the next couple of days as we head into the weekend because it will be feeling quite a bit colder, i suspect. Therell be some sunshine and some showers around, too. Were essentially drawing down a north to northwesterly airstream, and thats bringing in colder air all the way from iceland. And that colder air comes in behind a band of cloud and rain thats moving southwards on friday across england and wales, heading into southern england in the afternoon. That rain could turn heavier. To the north of it, we get some sunshine following on behind, but quite a rash of showers, some of those heavy, potentially with some hail and thunder, especially for the western side of scotland, where those showers are more frequent in the stronger wind. And temperatures are back down to 10 11 for large parts of the uk, may be 15 ahead of that rain in the southeast, where its going to be a wet end to the day. That rain does move through, clearer skies follow, showers continue into the evening across scotland and
Northern Ireland and the northwest of england. Into the weekend, weve got
High Pressure to the west, low pressure to the east of us, hence that north to northwesterly airstream that will bring in sunshine and showers. The bulk of the showers for northern and
Western Areas of the uk, and for much of the day,
Eastern England may well be dry with some spells of sunshine. But its going to feel chilly in the wind, and temperatures are no great state, typically 12 or 13 degrees on saturday. Moving into the second half of the weekend, that
High Pressure moves a little bit closer. The low is moving away and essentially, were seeing the isobars opening out of it so the winds are starting to ease down. It may not feel quite as cold, but it will be a chilly start first thing. And the stronger winds are still there across eastern scotland, down the north sea coast of england, and its here were more likely to catch the odd shower. Many other areas may well be dry with some spells of sunshine at times, not as windy. It wont feel quite as chilly in the afternoon, but still, temperatures are again 12 13. Moving into the beginning of next week, we change the wind direction, so that northerly airflow, the wind coming in from the atlantic, and that means cloud and rain heading our way on that weather front. Some uncertainty as to how quickly it will move into the uk, but weve got more cloud around on monday, outbreaks of rain, too, wetter towards the west and the southwest. It could turn drier in the afternoon for
Northern Ireland and westernmost areas of scotland, but still not very warm at all, temperatures struggling up to 13, maybe 14 degrees at best. As we see that weather front heading into the uk, its going to hang around then for a while, because it looks like it develops an area of low pressure which sits to the southeast of england. And that means stronger winds coming in around that area of low pressure off the north sea, bringing in more cloud, showers along with spells of rain for mainly england and wales. Wetter towards eastern parts of england, largely dry for scotland,
Northern Ireland with some sunshine, but still temperatures not really rising much at all, 11, 12, 13 degrees. If we look further ahead into next week, i can show you the jet stream. These are the high level winds. You can see how buckled the jet stream is. When you got a dip in thatjet stream, you got an area of low pressure continues to move to the southeast of england. Not quite sure how close it will be or how long its going to hang around. There is an area of
High Pressure trying to come in from the atlantic, and that will have more of an influence in the northwest. But i think for northern and northwestern parts of the uk, it looks a bit drier actually, chilly enough for maybe a touch of ground frost. For south eastern areas of the uk, near that area of low pressure, some stronger winds and some showers along with spells of rain. And treatment in englands hospitals because of the pandemic. Some two million have now been waiting for longer than 18 weeks the official target as revealed in the latest figures. As admissions double across england, for patients with covid, we report from one hospital preparing for the challenges of the winter months. If we see a flu season, if we see covid rising, how we balance that with keeping all the other patients who need to be treated in hospital coming through.
