World. Im george howell. Im natalie allen. Newsroom starts right now. It is 4 00 a. M. On the u. S. East coast. Around the world, good day to you. We begin with what is described as the worst terror attack in egypts history. The nations military claims to have found and killed at least some of the terrorists behind the bombing of a soufi mosque. This happened in the sinai peninsula. Officials promised retaliation after gunmen killed at least 235 people on friday. The attackers used explosive toes draw worshippers out of the mosque and then gunned them down. Even targeting those who came to help. Cnns ian lee followed the story in the region the for us. Officials are saying that the air force struck several vehicles carrying mill taptds. What more can you tell us . Gormg, egypts military launched an operation. Shortly after this attack, president sisi convened an emergency session and ordered the military to take action. They said they were combing the desert looking for the perpetrators involved because after this attack, the culprits were able to slip away into the desert relatively easily. The military did say they were able to strike some of those involved in this attack. But from the sheer scale of this operation, the scale of this attack, it seems like there were a number of people involved, people that the government will be looking for. Ian, this attack on muslims during worship, still no claims of responsibility at this point, thou though isis is believed to be behind it. Explain why this particular group was targeted. We do believe isis was behind that. One, this is an area where isis is known to operate. Isis can carry out sophisticated attacks like this. And why this mosque, a lot of people may be wondering why isis would attack a mosque in a first place. Thats because this mosque was the heart of suffi islam, which is a mystic, more tolerant form of islam than that being practiced by isis and their supporters, their followers, which is more pertanical form of islam and isis views sufis an infidels and theyve threatened the sufis before. Theyve attacked their shrines. So they have been in isiss cross hairs. While no one has claimed responsibility, thats the reason why we believe isis was behind this attack. Ian lee following the story. Thanks for the reporting. Lets get some context now from the chair of the department of middle east studies at the London School of economics live this hour from our london bureau. Always a pleasure to have you on the show, fuhuage. The most recent attack on sufi muslims, caught the christians targeted in the past. What is it about this region that makes it seem like such a hotbed for these extremists . This is a very good question because north sinai has witnessed an insurgency for the past more than a decade. So you have a very complex of insurgency which has escalated after 2013, after the topping of the Muslim Brotherhood president by the egyptian army. And the past, you know, since 2013, thousands of people have been killed. You have strategic attacks not only against is civilians, but even against the Security Forces. This is the beating heart of the radicalized insurgency that basically has taken on the ideology of isis since 2014. Since 2014, the socalled affiliate of sinai has pledged allegiance to isis. Its now tsh to its ideology and this is its power base and what it has done, it has focused mainly on the Security Forces and kopd the christians that in the past few months, it has focused more and more on sufis. In the past two months, it beheaded two sufi clans and the attack on the mosque is basically targeting the sufi community, a mystical strand of islam, a tolerant strand of islam. Its virtual strand of islam. What isis is trying to do is to show the government can not protect minorities and cannot protect his minorities of people. Lets talk a bit more on that. The president , it has been something that he has claimed he would crack down on this type of extremist. But does this, in effect, undermine his ability to take on this problem or did it put more pressure on him to do more . Well, i think, george, if you ask me, what is the strategic goal of the affiliate of sinai by carrying out strategic attacks against Coptic Christians and now against muslim worshippers, whether they are su if fis or your ordinary citizens, i think the goal is to undermine president sisi. Since 2013, the various radical elements, they are trying to undermine the credibility of the president and the president has come under tremendous pressure to show that he can protect egyptians. He was a commander in chief. He was a former general. By carrying out attacks all over, the al qaeda and affiliates are trying to show there is no stability and no security in egypt. Remember, george, they are waging Economic Warfare against egypt because the attacks against egypt undermine and basically destroyed the tourist industry which represents a major, major element of the egyptian economy. Look, theres been no official claim of responsibility again, but it is believed that this attack has been carried out by isis. What impact would an attack like this have on isis, this terror group which has been losing a great deal of ground throughout the middle east . You and i and our team, george, have been talking about how isis is looking big time in iraq and syria. Isiss has expanded near and wide. The most potent isis affiliates are now are in ee the gipt. They have expanded into many parts of the world, pakistan and afghanistan. And it tells you that even though isis is going down in both iraq and syria, the state is being dismantled, i think they will see many attacks. It is good to get your perspective on this. Thank you for that today. Thank you. We turn now to zimbabwe. People there hoping for new change from their new president. Mnanga xw wa was sworn in on friday. Farai reports on what has led to the change in that country. 18 days ago, this man was fired by Robert Mugabe. That single act set off a minor revolution leading zimbabwe to this point. Every revolution has a sound track. This is zimbabwes. The crowds sing along about a hero that comes along. Their hero today is their new president , emerson mnangagwa. Because the new man is not the old one. I, emerson tsh. Zimbabwes new president took the oath of office and signed the paperwork. Emerson has put pen to paper and has become the third president of the republic of zimbabwe. Mnangagwa asked the nation to let bygones be bygones. There is a lot we can do in the present and in the future to give our nation a positive direction. As we do so, we should never remain of our past. With incredible speed, the posters and the flags have been printed for this new dawn and the country is in the grip of a new positive energy. Its quite something. To witness a people who have had no voice suddenly come back to life. So here we are, a new energy has been infused into this nation which has been asleep for so long. Are you all happy . This apparent coup has been very strange. Everybody expected the sound of guns. Make no mistake, this is the armys man. For decades, he ran the forces from behind the ministerial desk. Now they happily salute him as the nations new commander in chief and the nations president. The honmy moon with the army shows no signs of abading. This is not about color or race or anything. Its all about zimbabwe, white, black, red, green or white. Lets unite and work for zimbabwe. And its this nations hope that they. Their new president can do just that. Cnn, what regardry. Were joined now by Washington Times correspondent jeff hill to discuss this historic change in the zimbabwes leadership. Jefr, thanks for talking with us with. First of all, the euphoria we just saw from thoses people, such a beautiful thing to see. Do you think he will come through for them . Yes, i do. Emerson is a pragmatist whereas mugabe was more of a if a loss fear. Emerson understands what needs to be done to get this country back on track. Words are not going to do it. Thats encouraging that youve met him and feel good about his taking over the country. What stood out for you . The fact that he said the past was the past and he didnt want any retribution, that he wanted to go forward inclusively. This was so important not just in terms of white and black. There are now 12 million back people, 4 million of them living in exile. And zimbabwe has a number tribes. There are a number of clans. Bringing all of those people together is so important. Is job one the economy . And where does he start. . This is so critical. Mugabe insisted all schools do algebra and shakespeare. Of course, you cant expect kids who have done their education to go and grow pumpkins. They want real jobs in the city. Theyre on twitter, theyre on facebook, and they insist on their voice being heard. The loudest voice is we want jobs. Hopefully he can start to create that. He reached out to the world saying were open for business. One journalist we spoke with said he was a tad the disappointed he didnt work alongside in this hope. Very difficult because, of course, he was involved in the genocide of the 1980s against the people in the south of zimbabwe. This would have him in the hague, essentially. So he has to be very careful. But remember when gorbachev came to power, neither of them said sorry for the past, they simply changed the future. Jeff hill with the Washington Times, thanks so much for joining us. We appreciate it. And still ahead here on news room this hour, the president of the United States on a working vacation and the weighty matters on his plate, talk, twitter and tee times. Im george howell. There is a clash over who will lead the federal consumer watchdog haeg in the United States. Richard cordray stepped down friday. In his letter, he named his Deputy Director as acting director. But the president had other ideas. He named budget director Nick Mulvaney to the post. Mulvaney, you see there, as a congressman, mulvaney had voted to do away with that agency. Senator elizabeth warren, an outspoken consumer advocate tweeted this, the dodd frank act is clear. If there is a cfpb director, they can see the Deputy Director becomes acting director. Donald trump cant override there. So well see what happens in that one. Absolutely. President trump is on a worki working at his maralago resort. Among other things on his mind, immigration, taxes and tee time as jeff zeleny reports. Mr. President. President trump hitting the links today with two of the biggest names in golf, tiger woods and dustin johnson. The white house rarely confirms when the president is golfing, but he made the announce thement himself on twitter saying he would be headed over to Trump National golf club, jupiter, to play golf quickly. He departed more than four hours the at the course. And his 100th day at a trumpbranded property. Many americans and a few president s play golf. Its only notable because of what mr. Trump said his candidacy. If i win, i may never see my properties again because ill be working for you, im not going to be playing golf. The president talking today with the egyptian president about the conflict in syria. The government considers a terrorist organization the pyg. The president condemning the attack in egypt, killing more than 230 people and wounding more than a hundred ears in the deadliest Terror Strike on egyptian soil. He called the president of egypt to discuss the attack, which he seized upon to push his immigration agenda, tweeting we have to get tougher and smarter than ever before and we will. Need the wall, need the ban. God bless the people of egypt. The president is turning his attention to the tax plan up for a vote next week in the senate. He offered a preview during a thanksgiving day call from maralago with thanksgiving day around the world. Now were working on tax cuts, big, fat, beautiful tax cuts. Hopefully youll get that and then youre going to see things happen. The president is set to meet with congressional leaders at the white house and attend a senate lunch on tuesday. The Senate Republicans still dont have the votes to pass a sweeping taxover all amid concerns of the deficit. Congress is talking about tax cuts that will add trillions to our National Debt and hurt our economy. Senator ron johnson has announced his opposition with senator susan collins, bob corker, jeff flake and Lisa Murkowski all discussing concerns. Senator john mccain will be a wild card. Trump merchandise was marked down 30 on black friday. In the president s phone call with egyptian president sisi, talking with president ur due want talking about terror in syria both on a call earlier this week with russian president putin also about syria. This working vacation ends after the weekend. He heads back to washington on sunday. Joining me from los angeles, cnn political analyst and president of the Global Policy institute at loyola mount university. The president tweeted this, Time Magazine called to say that i was probably going to be named man person of the year like last year, but i would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks, anyway. Time responded, the president is incorrect and how we choose person of the year. Time doesnt comment on our choice until publication until december 6th. So it just seems another trump moment where its an all the about me bluster. Yet another example of the trump ego run amuck as it did yesterday when he tried to thank the troops for thanksgiving and turned it into a story about how great i am and what a great job im doing and dont you just love what im doing. Its reminiscent of when Teddy Roosevelt who had a pretty overstuffed ego, as well, when his daughter once said poor dad has to be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral and the baby at every christening. Its kind of donald trump needs to be the center of the attention. He needs to be seen as being superior, as a win wither, and anything that interferes with that, he has to erase. His daughter, ivanka, is in the news because she is headlining a summit in india put on by the state department. However, the state department, led by Rex Tillerson, has decided hes not sending a high level delegation. Does this have to do with the fact that ivanka is headlining it . Certainly. Its also in part or function that the state department is tremendously understaffed, that there are all kinds of positions that should be filled that arent. Plus, the budget cuts that tillerson is having to impose, hes trying to make a leaner and smaller state department. All of which plays into what i think is also now his desire not to feed the beast, not to give ivanka trump more prestige, more status. I think i sees her as the style where he is the substance. She has a way. Shes beautiful and shes glamorous, the president s tower, a way of stealing the attention, stealing the show the way her father does. Whereas tillerson is the serious man. Hes the one that has to make the deals, deal with other leaders, she flies in, flies out, makes the speech and looks glamorous. Many have questioned why she has such a front row seat at the table, but right now, she does in her way. Finally its nice to be the president s daughter. Yes, yes. Shes had quite some experiences, for sure. The major story that broke over the holiday that lawyers for mr. Flynn, mr. Trumps former political adviser said they will to the stop communicating with the president ial legal team. Its almost certainly a sign that now flynn is talking. And the question is what is the story that he has to tell . And how far will it lead towards the president . Its clooer that the Mueller Investigation doesnt need flynn to talk about what happened with flynn in turkey or russia. They have a ton of material on that. What they want is to go after bigger fish. So the question is can mueller get flynn to give up bigger fish like perhaps don jr. , jared, maybe even the president for the sweeter deal, a better deal not just for himself, but tore his son. This is probably a big break point. We know its important, we just dont know if its going to be a blockbuster. Michael, as always, we thank you for your help. Thanks. Thank you, natalie. More news for you right after this. Welcome back to viewers here in the United States and all around the world. Youre watching cnn newsroom. Thank you for being with us. Im george howell. But i would have to agreed to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway. Emerson mnangagwa, the zimbabwes new president was sworn in on friday. He called Robert Mugabe a mentor, but plans to back away from his policies. Mugabe resigned this week after nearly four decades in power. We are tracking developing news out of pakistan. 100 people have been arrested in a protest in islam ma bad and more than 100 police and protesters have been injured. Authorities tried to break up the demonstration with teargas and with rubber bullets. The protest began more than two weeks ago when with around 2,000 people blocked a major road. Lets go live to cnns sophia safi in islamabad following the story. What more can you tell us about the reason for these protests . Well, george, this has been ongoing for two weeks, like you said. But the actual root cause goes back to last month when, according to the protesters, the government committed blasphemy. Theyre claiming that the government made a change in which an oath made by lawmakers in which theyre supposed to make a promise that the prophet mohammed is the last prophet of god, they made a change regarding that oath and now the protesters are calling for the law minister to resign. The government, on the other hand, is claiming that this never happened. Because of that, there was this the stalemate in the capital for the last two weeks which has now erupted in the protests that happened this morning. Gormg. Sofia, thank you for the reporting. Well stay in touch with you. Outrage is growing after cnn uncovered a horrific modern day slave market. As youll recall, our reporting revealed migrants being sold as property in libya. The u. N. s high commissioner for human rights said friday people of african dissent are frequently denied their rights. His words come as people in paris have taken to the streets to demand action. Cnns melissa bell has more from the french capital. For the second time in a week, protesters gathered in paris to express their anger and to call for an end to slavery. The trigger, cnns exclusive reporting on libyas slave markets. Translator we talk about the weight of words and the shock of images. People were able to see for themselves. This is what people were able to see. Dozens of men in libya being sold at auction, many for as little as 400. Preside president macron wants people to react. It leads to the most serious crimes and feeds in part the terror networks. The french president was joined this week in paris by the head of the african union. He, too, wants more than words. We are in a situation where human beings are threatened. Imagine you find yourself in a state where human beings are sold to the highest bidder. This is abominable and no conscious can accept it. We have to act and we have to act now. Translato. That sense of outrage has been expressed in the national assembly. The greatgreat grandson of a slave received a standing oh he vacation when he delivered a passionate plea to parliament to act. And it was the viral Facebook Post of anotherdy sendant of guadelupan slaves that led to saturdays protest in paris. But he believes that the zepss may be felt elsewhere. Translator this has to serve as a wakeup call to to african leaders. And i think with regard to the pictures, there will be a before and an after. And its not impossible to image that some political systems, that some governments in africa may wobble and even fall in the coming months because there has been an awakenel and there is a desire for revolution today. The numbers on this latest protests are down. But the anger here is diminished. And the organizers say they will continue to diminish these protests so the momentum is not lost. The u. N. Refugee agency is voicing concern about a new deal between myanmar and rohingya. The agreement was signed thursday. Myanmar is touting it as a winwin situation, but there are no official details about how the process will work. And the u. N. Group since bangladesh shouldnt send any rohingya back to myanmar unless their passage is safe and basic rights are guaranteed. An estimated 15,000 refugees have fled since august, this when a new outbreak began when Myanmar Military and armed militants. Refugees do have a right to return and a framework that enables them to exercise this right in line with International Standards would be welcome. First and foremost, this means that return must be voluntary and take place in safe and dignified conditions that pave the way for lasting solutions. Present conditions in myanmars state are not in place to enable safe and sustainable returns. Refugees are still fleeing. Many have suffered violence, rape and deep psychiatric logical harm. Some have witnessed the death of family members and friends. Most have little or nothing to go back to their homes and villages destroyed. Earlier this week, the u. S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson said myanmars actions against the rohingya were clearly ethnic cleansing. Myanmars military has repeatedly denied that it has mistreated them. Days of steady rain have left part of the Pacific Northwest under water and both of you have lived in those parts. So you know what its like. When it rains, it pours, especially in that part of the world. It does and if its not pouring, its drizzling for months and months and months so it takes a while. But sometimes you get a plume of moisture that comes in and dumps a lot of water in a short amount of time and that is what can happen. We have areas that have been completely inundated. Mind you, terrible timing. This is about 60 miles or so to the north of seattle and were looking at a very small village here or a town, right . Theres silvana. Things are not as bad as we are looking at right now. The water has receded. But there was one swift water rescue there. Look at that car. Thats completely marooned on one of the roads there as people are trying to get themselves from a to b or perhaps over to grandmas house and having a hard time doing so. The problem is, we have more moisture on the way and more flooding potential because we have pineapples involved. The Pineapple Express is on. There is hawaii, honolulu all the way to the left side south of your screen. That moisture, you can see the connection here clearly coming all the way from hawaii and up into seattle. The issue is its not going right into california, right, because we have this area of high pressure. And what that does, it blocks everything from moving due east so everything gets concentrated in one particular area. That would be seattle and into portland and we continue with the rainfall over the next few days. Of course its crashing into the Olympic Mountains the, towards the cascades and down into the olympic area. That will continue for today and into tomorrow. Additional rainfall and the potential for flooding. The flood watches are up and we have flood warnings where we have rivers that have been involved in the flooding, as well. That takes longer time to recover from because the flooding tends to go downstream and thats exactly what we have, particularly at the scagette river here. It peaked at 33 feet. 28 is flood stage. Now were going down. So we have crested there, thankfully. More rain is on the way, unfortunately. Up towards of 2 to 4 inches and this is just in the next 48 hours. It will be quite a time of it. Then theres this, right . Did you enjoy thanksgiving . Most of the United States was under a heat wave, if you will, for this time of year, anyway. 50 record highs. This was just on friday, on black friday. So everybody was out shopping at the brick and mortar. Perhaps you left the computer and made yourself outside without a jacket, even. Temperatures very warm. We had a front that moves through, so minneapolis, youll go from 40s to 30s and chicago will go from 60s to 40s. So theres a difference there. But a lot of the u. S. Looking at temperatures once again into the 60s and 70s. And perhaps a few more records broke. En. By the way, and if you spent thanksgiving in los angeles, 92 degrees. Warmest ever on record, since weve been keeping records, and that goes back to 1870. 92 there on thanksgiving. But cooler in the 70s. Thank you so much. Here in the United States, the day after thanksgiving, its called black friday and its the biggest shopping event of the year. But as some shoppers battle crowds and long lines, step out and try to get those discountses, some retailers struggle to get up. Macys Department Store struggled to process the enormous volume of credit card payments in its physical stores and on its website. On twitter, some customers complained about delays and payments not going through at all. The company cant really afford any setbacks. The chain has been suffering from declining sales and shrinking revenue. They didnt need that to happen, i guess. I guess not, yeah. Meanwhile, one of macys direct competitors is celebrating a record black friday. The Online Retail giant amazon reportedly swept up almost half of fridays online sales and its founder and ceo just reached a milestone of its own. Big milestone, in fact. Bloomberg said jeff bay squeeze just with reached a net worth of 100 billion. Bezos stake in amazon netted him an extra 2. 4 billion on friday alone. That pushed him into the top bracket of the worlds richest people. Go jeff bezos. Amazon is reaching out beyond its online boarders, as well. It opened up a physical popup store in london on friday. Theres just no stopping jeff bezos, is there . Samuel burke went there to see what its up to. There is a major shift happening right now. 59 of americans say that they plan to shop online this year. Thats the first time that weve seen more people planning to do this in the Digital World than the physical world. Even though we hear so much about brick and mortar stores, closing up because they cant compete with amazon, that very same company is actually opening up more and more spaces in the physical world, including an amazon popup shop. So, paul, its amazons home of black friday and this is the kitchen. Thats right. But the real question for you guys is amazon was always supposed to be a digital space. Thats what made you more efficient. You didnt have to pay for a brick and mortar shop. Why a place like this kitchen for black friday . Weve always tried to experiment at amazon. We did that when we first brought black friday to the uk in 2010. Why spend all the time creating this beautiful kitchen when you guys own whole foods now . Theres a whole foods right down the street in london where you could be doing all this. Because we are selling to people in their homes and we want people to see how this product will work in their homes. What weve done here is tried to create what a home might look like. It is interesting because you see the tentacles of amazon extending. It makes some people wonder where will it stop . Is amazons goal to be in all parts of our lives, literally from the living room to income door to our work . I think amazons goal is to mistake things easier tore our customers. If that means putting a delivery locker in or near your work, its easier for you to get your parcel, if by putting a place like this in to make sure people you understand how things work better, thats what well do. As long as they sign up for prime. So who are going to be the big winners here . When you speak to experts, they say it will be the places that have a foothold in both the digital and the physical world like amazon is doing the way walmart is with its acquisition of jet. Com. Left in the dust, could be people like target and costco, which just havent been able to build out their digital spaces, as well. Samuel burke for us there from lopped. The u. S. Now officials are going to unusual lengths to make sure the tax returns dont end up in the wrong hands. Christina has our story. In the heart of washington, d. C. , a Government Agency is closely guarding a document in such high demand that bountys have been placed on the file. Well, its a very big tax returns, the biggest ever in the history of what were doing. More than a year after then candidate donald trump said they would be released, gaining access to them is all but impossible. We always referred to all the president s returns being in a safe. It turns out that it was safelike in the sense that it was a locked cabinet in a locked room. So we decided we should actually turn it into a safe if a locked room. And who has access to that room . You know, i dont know. I dont have access. John koskinen says the agency locked down trumps returns in 2016 and is now focusing on the physical documents. Theres almost no other taxpayer that i can remember where theres been this kind of focus on. Isnt there some way we can get ahold of those returns. One hacking magazine has offered 10,000 to anyone who can get a copy of the president s paperwork. Last year, Even Wikileaks tweeted a request. What i have here is a copy of Donald Trumps tax returns. In march, msnbc got a few pages from a journalist who said he got them in his mailbox. You didnt solicit it. No. You didnt ask anybody for it. Correct. Still, theres so much more to uncover. Is there more information on file at irs than the president s make available historically . Yes. Oftentimes, there are much more voluminous exhibits that dont get printed and shared with the package. So that entire package is what is kept secure. And security at the irs is no easy task. Most are not successful, but its not for lack of trying. One investigator is currently facing charges after guessing a Social Security number and using it to access the president s tax information. In 2015, a socalled cyber mafia used stolen informationing to pose as taxpayers and access millions of documents on the irs website, affecting some 720,000 people. As for rogue employees inside the irs, koskinen says hes not worried. We basically have a handful of people who have the keys to the kingdom, as it were, in our i. T. Department, but we have great confidence in those people and they take that responsibility seriously. So how could finally make the president s tax returns pup public . There is one guy. Cnn, washington. Earlier, we told but president trumps tweet turning down being named Time Magazine aerps person of the year. Others took to twitter, as well. Julia driphus tweeted this, the New York Times i was probably going be named comedian of the year and i said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks, anyway.
