Night. And i decided i should based on the press conference yesterday. People were asking did i take the test. What was the result. I dont know whatever it takes a day or two days. They send it to a lab. As for the public, the number of cases is growing by the minute. At last count, there were more than 2,600 people that have tested positive for coronavirus, 57 deaths nationwide. So far no federally mandated closures. But 19 states along with puerto rico and d. C. Have shut down schools. A look overseas could be a glimpse into the near future. Both spain and france have kane a cui from italy and shut down this weekend. France closed all nonessential stores, restaurants movie theaters and clubs. Spain going further, banning anyone from leaving home unless its to go to work, to buy essential supplies, go to the hospital or support an elderly person or minor. President trump surprising reporters when he walked into the briefing announcing last night he was tested to see if he was infected by the virus. Cnns Kristin Holmes is at the white house. Christian, you and the rest of the press score had to pass a Health Screening to walk into the Briefing Room today. Thats unusual. Yeah, it was interesting, happening so fast that it took a second to realize what was going on. A press aide and white house physician going by room to room in the White House Press area, essentially taking our temperatures, going by one with unof the nontouching thermometers and make being sure we didnt have a fever. One reporter got turned away from the briefing because multiple times the white house physician took the temperature and it was too high, not consistent with a normal temperature, the cdc guidelines saying it was in a fever zone. Clearly this is a ramping up here of the precautions set to protect the president. I mean, this is night and day from what we saw just yesterday. Yesterday we saw President Trump in the rose garden, shaking hands with everyone, close to everyone, clearly no one there having their temperature taken. Today we know it wasnt just members of the press but also members of the task force. And were hearing its going to be run of business now. Its going to be what we see on a regular occasion if the president or Vice President is in any sort of proximity. And i think this is making many people feel a lot more secure. We heard President Trump over and over again kind of downplaying the virus, downplaying the fact that he interacted with people testing positive for coronavirus. Now seeing a true escalation in the precautions set up by the white house. Folks at home may not realize that the quarters for the press are crammed. I want a surprise its taken the white house so long to do this considering we are in close proximity with the president on a regular basis. Lets a talk about the changes today. Travel restrictions from overseas getting tighter. Who is affected. Thats right we know early yerl in the week there was this announcement of a ban from europe but excluded the uk and ireland. Now that is no longer the case. Listen to what Vice President pence said today. The president has made a decision to suspend all travel to the United Kingdom and ireland effective midnight monday night eastern standard time. Again, americans in the uk or ireland can come home. And we also heard from the president and officials that there were discussions about some kind of restrictions on Domestic Travel. We had heard from sources that was just a preliminary conversation and would involve areas that are the hot spots, the places that have seen the worst outbreaks in the United States. But no decisions have been made on that. We know monday Vice President pence is having a phone call with the state governors and likely to be one of the big topics. Kristin holmes we appreciate the reporting. You may have seen videos on social media many people across the country arent so much shopping as they are wiping out Grocery Store shelves. Water, cleaning supplies, paper products, toilet paper, a lot of supermarkets and Big Box Stores sold out of those things today. Health experts say panic buying especially in the crisis may not be the wisest move. Here is cnns brian todd. Reporter shopping in the age of coronavirus. Sarah wears a mask and gloves hitting the local Grocery Store in washington because she doesnt want to transfer germs to her mother who has an autoimmune condition. Are you nevds, scared about this whole thing. I am. Ive been following it closely now. And its just i dont want us to be in a situation like italy. Reporter across the u. S. Stock piling seems to be everywhere. A prominent analytic firms says online sales of antibacteriaial sprays shot up in january and february because many cant get them in stores. Whenever we get new rations in of Hand Sanitizer and wipes we put them by the registers and they go within minutes. And there are runs on many other items. Reporter were you trying to buy anything you couldnt get. Actually, all the toilet paper is gone. A lot of the frozen foods, a lot of the breads. Its hectic, i would say, a lot of the grows frozen vegetables, cleaning supplies, even to a certain extent meats and dairy hard to come by. Exhausting people on the other side of the grocery industry. At a morten Williams Food distribber in new york. This man is racing to restock. Every supermarket is completely wiped out. Reporter but Public Health experts say lets slow down a bit. They dont need a years worth of toilet tissue. They dont need cartons of paper napkins. They they dont need to buy, you know, food for six weeks. Reporter experts aits important for consumers to realize this situation is temporary. Focused on simple, nonperishables that can sustain us inside our homes. Figure out what your family likes. And maybe cans of tuna fish, maybe Peanut Butter and jelly, whatever it is you feel like you can plan for a couple weeks of not being able to go outside. Have medications so you dont have to refill a prescription if you dont need to. Reporter experts point out that crowding into the Grocery Store isnt healthy. Standing in the long lines within. Of people is not the social distancing recommended and they say however, wherever you shop, do it calmly. There is no reason to panic. There is no reason to rush out and buy every item on the shelves. What that does is just increases peoples sense of doom and gloom here which will not be necessary. Reporter Public Health and consumer experts have other tips for people wanting to stock up during the outbreak. Any say if your favorite store is open 24 7 try going after midnight. Or if available in your area try a Food Delivery Service to maybe reduce some of the stress. Brian todd, cnn, washington. All right, brian thank you for that. We have plenty to discuss and fortunately we have a star studded panel tonight. With us former president ial adviser to four u. S. President s david gergen. A formerly Senior Adviser to the National Security under president obama. Samantha. And Mohamed L Arian and the director of the division of infectious deceases at university of alabama. David starting with you clearly there are mixed messages from the white house on a consistent basis during a time of crisis. Earlier today a reporter asked about reports of a possible travel ban upon the uk and ireland. The president spade it was something that was being considered. About 15 minutes later at the same press conference, mike pence announced that exact travel ban. Why the disparity . Why didnt the president announce it himself. I think, boris what we can welcome is that the white house is making a huge uturn in its approach to the coronavirus, coming out of the complacency, recognizing now at long last that this is really serious. A lot of people are going to die. And you have to save lives. Thats to be celebrated in all sorts of ways. But they are doing it in such a way that they expose the continuing flailing around within the white house on almost every subject that there is a lot of extra energy that goes into and confusion, and people not knowing the right hand is not talking to the left hand. You had the situation today. And just last night, as boris said, you were saying at the top of the show, the white house physician issued a statement that made it clear that the president was not going to be tested. Then we learn this morning he was tested, about the same time the press release went out. By the way, that doctor i learned the first time today he is not an m. D. I was surprised by that. Thats interesting in and of itself. Yeah, a lot of questions about that test. That statement from the white house physician coming at about 11 50 p. M. The president today saying he got a test last night. You wonder when it was administered. Samantha there is talk of a Domestic Travel restriction going into place. Is that something you think might be necessary. It might be necessary, but what we are seeing is the president publicly throw spaghetti at a wall as to what proposals he may move forward with in the near term. The foreign travel ban excluded uk and ireland. Days later they are tapped on. The question is what is substantively driving the proposals when it comes to restrictions or behaviors . The fact is rather than unequivocally leading the response the, the president is undermining with comments about proposals that dont exist, mechanism that dont exist and even getting back to the testing issue, why did the president of the United States walk into a Briefing Room today after having been tested for coronavirus and expose himself when he doesnt know if he is or isnt infected, so many journalists in close quarters. He is potentially making himself patient zero when it comes to the virus, and really undermining cdc guidelines that millions are supposed to follow. S in a case we dont want to follow the leader when it comes to appropriate behavior. And we really need to question what is driving his policy making at this point . He did allude to trying to follow the cdc guidelines when he talked about trying not to shake hands. He acknowledged he didnt do it. Which he did yesterday. Right but doing it all this time and rallies with large crowds where he suggests the epidemic, pandemic is a hoax perpetrated by democrats. Lets hold that thought. I want to move to mohamed. Earlier today you tweeted neither the economy or social norms and practices are wired for the shock that were seeing in the economy. You are concerned about economic stops. In your eyes what else does the federal government need to do to brace more the longterm, for a broader Economic Impact . Boris it needs to do a lot. You have to understand whats going on. We are going through a shock thats more familiar with fragile and failed states or a community hit by a big Natural Disaster than it is to us. So not only do we have a fundamental sudden stop to every Economic Activity you can think of. But the panic makes it worse. You have to do three things quickly. First protect the most vulnerable segments of spoet and economy, including massive resources to medical. Two, set out a pathway so that people understand where we are, where we are going, and, three, communicate repeatedly transparently and professionally so that people dont make things worse. We need to move on all three and do that as quickly as possible. And dr. Mura stchlt t today debra burks said a negative test means you are only negative to that moment. When you get the negative test that means you are negative that day. That doesnt mean that you couldnt get the virus, spreading overnight, because it replicates in the nose and nasal secretions and you would be positive tomorrow. If you have a negative test that doesnt mean you discontinue precautions or start taking risks because you were negative. Now, if we follow that logic, doctor, shouldnt the president continue taking tests, considering how many people he interacts with every day . Its a great question, boris. I thought that comment was a little confusing. I think what the ambassador is alluding to is the fact that the dynamics of the virus infecting your tissues, whether nose, throat or lungs, are actually not totally predictable. We know there is a period of about four days where you can have no symptoms but still have the virus detected. And then after you develop symptoms and you get better you can still have the virus detected, although at lower levels. So this concept of a single test being able to tell you sort of to predict the future is really confusing. Technically she is right. But what we should really be telling people is that if you have no symptoms you shouldnt be tested. Thats another thing i think the administration is not role modelling very properly. If you have no symptoms, you dont need to be tested. Were not testing contacts. Its actually an inappropriate use of tests that are very dear to us right now that we need to use to test patients. And, doctor, im kushz when you hear the reports and see the video of journalists getting temperature taken, is that an effective method for preventing spread of virus. Its always good it know if you have a fever, even a low grade fever, because fever is a very consistent feature of in illness. Almost everybody gets a fever at some point during the disease. It may not be in the first few days. And it may actually come on and then get better and come back again. When that happens those people are often very sick. The problem with using fever as a determine nant whether somebody is infected and infectious in that early stage and see its not very sensitive. If you just use fever as a collect to look at people coming into your area, youd maybe detect only about 50 of cases, and even then thats probably an overestimate. So i think its a good thing. Sort of an abundance of caution measure, but not something that would make me sleep better if i just relied on that. David, you were going to Say Something . I just want to come ban back on the testing. I think its fascinating. But i think the real problem here is the lack of testing kits. Americans are have been frightened by what theyve been hearing the last three or four weeks. Its not unnatural that a lot of people would like as a baseline to have a test and just to know that its negative. Neck sort of plan lives out from there. But i do think that what we are running into and the problem is not what americans want i want the fact that this government hasnt prepared properly. We dont have enough of of the kits. And the wall street journal reported today something i had not seen elsewhere, and that is the ingredients that go into these kits are starting to run on low supplies. So that were running down what we have. Which is quite concerning. Samantha, i have to ask about china because the president today said specifically we shouldnt blame anyone but then he said the virus came out of china. A lot of lawmakers are pressing for the United States to take a more aggressive stand toward chinas inability to contain the virus. And its inability to allow the International Community to help it contain the virus. There were a lot of missteps there. Do you wish the United States would take a more aggressive approach toward china because of their mishandling of this. We have to separate the issues here. Its a fact that china has censered information about the virus, has spread misinformation about the virus and continues to do so. One of the diplomats a day or two ago said this was potentially a biological weapon from the United States. But lets remember the president and his team have access to highly classified intelligence about whats going on in the world, including, for example, the state of viruss in china. The fact gnat chinese spread misinformation about in is not a get out of jail free card when it comes to the administrations lack of preparedness. And its relatively ironic this administration is accuseding a the Chinese Government of misinformation about the virus, downplaying threat and lack of preparedness when we have the president of the United States giving press conferences talking about websites that dont exist, Testing Centers that dont exist, and downplaying the scale of the problem for the American People. So the chinese are at fault. But President Trump could lead by example here and share Accurate Information while trying to take the chinese though account on this. Yeah. We still have a ton of questions to ask for the panel. David gergen. Samantha. Mohamed and dr. Jean muraso. We are following breaking news from overseas.
