Go, go, go what the [ bleep ] . Help him got mace in my eyes. The shootling happened on a night that also included tense clashes between Racial Justice activists and a caravan of Trump Supporters rolling into town for a demonstration on their own. [ bleep ]. You dont live here [ bleep ] [ bleep ]. This video from the New York Times mike baker shows a man in the back of firing a paint ball gun. A man in another truck releases a gas and then some of the protesters respond by throwing objects back at them. Heres what baker said about that moment. As soon as both groups got together it was increasingly volatile throughout the night. We saw paint balls fired from the back of pickup trucks and the people throwing things back. At times cars that were, vehicles that were blocked and people getting out and fist fights happening in the streets. There was growing tensions and scattered throughout downtown with the vehicles driving down different streets up. Pursuing them in different parts of downtown. While Police Showed up to sort of redirect traffic or keep the groups apart it became something that they couldnt handle. At any moment now we expect to hear from the mayor of portland about last nights events and standing by for a press conference in portland. The president has been openly attacking the mayor on twitter saying in part the mayor is a fool. Bring in the National Guard. Cnns Josh Campbell joining us now. Josh, while we wait to hear from the mayor there, tell us what youve learned about these protests and what happened last night. Reporter yeah. This is the site of so much violence for weeks now. The city of portland, we have seen the images, protesters coming out, some peaceful, some groups with rioters attacking a federal building, clashing with Law Enforcement and been reporting on that. Overnight you have an added layer, the hundreds of pro Trump Supporters clashing overnight with some of the counter demonstrators and we learned you have this large group in a nearby suburb and took a caravan into downtown, that leaving series of confrontations in the wake of protesters here, some of the violent protesters as our colleague from the New York Times mike baker mentioned is trump protesters shooting into the crowd, paint ball guns and back and forth projectiles launched and police made a number of arrests and there was one person shot and killed, police say theyre investigating this as a homicide. Law enforcement officers heard the sound of gunshots and the New York Times reporting that the deceased person had a hat from the Patriot Prayer group, a far right group here in portland that clashed in the past with demonstrators that obviously taking on a new tone here for these protests now turning deadly. Police say that continues to be under information and dont have a suspect yet and hearing from sour sources who tell us that theyre concerned if this was a pro trump supporter, a member of the far right group that was killed they expect the likelihood of people coming in perhaps seeking revenge and just a very volatile situation in the city of portland. The president early this morning weighing in on what was taking place rather than condemning the violence but fueling the fire and his words on twitter saying this was not expected, the clashes based on the incidents of weeks now in portland and took aim at the portland mayor and criticized for weeks saying that the democratic leadership in the city did not do enough to quell the violence and the mayor tells us he wants the federal government to step back and stay out of it, saying that the violence is largely stemmed from that federal presence and the back and forth and we expect to hear from the mayor shortly. We expect him to respond to last nights developments, ofly the criticism we are seeing from the president thats something he is not shy of responding to in the past and expect to hear more and chaotic situation in portland. Doesnt seem any end is in sight especially with a suspected homicide overnight and no indication that the protests end any time soon. We played the video from the witness at the scene and that person was shot and we dote know the identity yet of the victim or if police have a suspect at this point but how crucial do you think that videos going to be as a former Law Enforcement member yourself . Reporter yeah. You know, i talked to Portland Police last night saying that theyre looking for any witnesses who can help describe what took place. Obviously the video will be key but they want do get a sense of what was takes place. We know that its obviously very difficult at times for Law Enforcement to identify different subjects when you have a large group of people together clashing but not only looking at digital video but looking for witnesses to see what happened to come forward and provide information and the police arent indicating a suspect is in custody and what is so chaotic here is that were not just talking about one Murder Investigation that authorities can focus on. They have to look at the larger let to the city. If this person is a pro trump supporter, they say that tonight could be very, very dangerous to see a larger group of people trying to seek retribution. They have seen the violence of rioters and Law Enforcement but this added layer and then some of these far right groups coming in to essentially try to take justice into their own hands just a powder keg here in the city of portland. We await the words from the mayor in his press briefing with local Law Enforcement officials. Josh campbell in oregon for us, thank you. President trump has been making his thoughts on the situation very clear today. I want to go to cnns Jeremy Diamond at the white house and tell us what is the president saying. Reporter talk about what the president isnt saying. He isnt urging for calm, trying to can deescalate the situation in the city of portland or kenosha, wisconsin. We are seeing from the president is an attempt to amplify the videos of clashes of supporters and black lives matter protesters in city of portland and him ochf course trying to amplify the divisions in the country and a tweet of the president is an image of supporters heading into portland and tweeting this after the violence that we saw overnight, after there was this reported homicide in the city of portland. The president also tweeting a video of supporters going on the parade through the city of portland and you can see the president supporters on the backs of flatbeds of trucks shooting paint balls and pepper spray at some of these supporters. It is not unexpected after 95 days of watching an incompetent mayor admit he doesnt have any idea what hes doing and calls him a fool and call once again for the National Guard to be deployed to that city and the message from the president is this amplification of quote unquote law and order calling the protesters thugs and sometimes not a distinction of those who are carrying out violence in the city and those who are peaceful. We did hear from the white house chief of staff this morning answering a question about the fact that ultimately this is all happening in Donald Trumps america. Listen to his response. We have had over 200 anarchists and theyre not Peaceful Protesters but conduct violent acts every night and in democrat cities. You want to talk about Donald Trumps america. Most of Donald Trumps america is peaceful. It is a democratled city and portland we talk about this morning when just yesterday denied help once again from the federal government and so listen. We need to get to the bottom of this and hold people accountable. Reporter no question there that President Trump, the strategy is to seize on some of the violence in these cities as part of the Campaign Message trying to portray himself as the candidate of law and order but the irony is that he is going after joe biden suggesting that this is joe bidens america, of course, the president is the president of the United States now and trying to fling the attacks back on his opponent. Jeremy, thank you. Portland is the second city where protests have turned deadly this week. First there was kenosha, wisconsin, where a 17yearold trump supporter is accused of shooting three people, killing two of them. President trump will head to kenosha tuesday to survey some of the damage caused by the unrest that happened there. Cnns Shimon Prokupecz is joining us now from kenosha. What are you hearing about the president s visit . Reporter we just got word, our colleague sara sidner spoke to the local mayor here in kenosha and he says hes not happy about the president s visit. Very clear. He says that this is not the right time for the president to visit. He also says that he has not been informed of the visit officially and not talked to anyone from the white house so its very clear the president is obviously doing this on his own, not talking to some of the Community Leaders here about this visit. And one of the things as you said is that the white house is saying hes coming here to meet with Law Enforcement and to survey the damage. And there is some damage. We have seen the fires but it isnt as extensive as maybe the president would like to believe. When you look behind me, the president should walk through this community here because many of the people, yes, they boarded up a lot of stores, theyre open for business and painted beautiful murals all across this town to try to bring people together, to express their support for the black lives matters movement, for a lot of protesters who have been protesting here peacefully and this behind me is what people in the Community Want out there, for people to know theyre trying to come together. Get the con tertext around the president s visit to this town. Kenosha was a county the president won in the last election, the first republican in 44 years to win this county. He also won the state, the state of wisconsin, an important swing state and he won this state by just less than 23,000 votes. So that is something to consider as his visit approaches here on tuesday. And we dont really know if hes going to make any attempts to visit the family of mr. Blake or have any kind of communication with them. The only thing the white house has said is that he is coming to meet with Law Enforcement and survey the damage. Ana . I was curious to he was going to speak or at least reach out to the blake family. We know jacob blake sr. Said it may be too late for outreach from the president. S Shimon Prokupecz, thank you. The democrats are accusing the president of agitating the tension. The president is willfully fanning the flames of this violence. Well discuss right after this. The Police Shooting of jacob blake in wisconsin was just the most recent spark and builds on months of nationwide protests that followed the death of george floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police in may. Were now just 65 days from the president ial election and republicans are looking to weaponize the ongoing unrest. The hard truth is you wont be safe in joe bidens america. You wont be safe in joe bidens america. We can have four more years of President Trump or no safety, no justice and no peace. This continuous riots in democratic cities gives you a good view of the future under biden. They will make every city look like democratrun portland, oregon. No one will be safe in bidens america. Today on cnn the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee chairman congressman adam schiff accused the president of not only seeing this violence as useful for the reelection but of and tagitating it. The president is willfully fanning the flames of this violence. As his own adviser Kellyanne Conway said last week, they believe the violence is helpful to them. And the president is only motivated by one thing, whats in it for him . And he seas this violence and the his ability to agitate more of it as useful to his campaign. What it does to the country, the loss of life, he doesnt care. I bring in cnn analyst Christine Powers and rick wilson. The author of running against the devil. Rick, the trump campaigns message is that no one is safe in bidens america. But this is all happening now in trumps america. Why would trump think this is something to highlight . It is indeed happening in trumps america and what you are seeing from the administration to stoke that tension, to increase the level of agitation in the cities and in the political process that we are seeing overall, a recapitulation of the 1968 strategy of nixon to scare the hell out of the middle part of the country by saying the dangerous people in the cities are coming to you and playing that playbook effectively for their audience right now and the reason theyre doing it of course is because of their complete failure to handle covid, to prepare the economy for this pandemic and the broad sense of corruption around donald trump thats caused so much of america to have no faith in this administration. So it is certainly the violence is playing to their political strategy which tells you a lot about how low they will stoop in the coming weeks. There are some sign that is the gops framing of the deadly protests is working. Theres a poll saying the percentage of americans that see the protests as mostly legitimate dipped from 62 in june to 53 in august and the percentage who believed that these are people mostly acting unlawfully rose from 28 to 38 . Should this worry democrats . Well, i think there are democrats that are worried about it but i would point out that thats just because theres a poll that say some people has lost some faith in the black lives Matter Movement doesnt mean that thats going to affect their vote. So you know, are people voting on black lives matter or voting on covid or voting on the economy . Are they going to be voting on healthen shur Health Insurance . There was a poll where trump managed to close the gap a little bit with biden and biden is still up, i think a Morning Consult poll among white suburban voters and the messaging is effective with white suburban Republican Voters and even though it is somewhat nonsensical in that trump is the president and he is the one whos stoking it and joe biden has nothing to do with it. President trump and fox news are really acting like the only big news story is this unrest in big cities but as you pointed out, rick, last time i checked 1,000 americans a day are still dieing from the coronavirus. A number equal to nowhere else in the world. Is the unrest all Republican Voters care about . No. Republican voters have certainly shown us in recent survey work that about 65 of them that defected from trump and that number is small but rising have done so because they believe his handling of covid is so incompetent and irresponsible and dangerous and i think theres a risk in this entire thing that it could quickly turn around and blow back. When you have armed caravans of suppo supporters going into portland, an idea that donald trump would continue to stoke that tension, praising the people last night and did lead to violence, led to a supporter culled last night and horrifying. We should be deescalating and a responsible president would be doing that and he sees increasing the tngss and the raeshl the en racial tension thats a message thats fundamentally dangerous for any american president to take on because it really tells you something about the inner workings of his brain and prejudices and how politicized hes willing to make them. Given it is so clear that trumps message is going to be law and order, what does joe biden need to do to counter that . It would be reasonable for him to come out and condemn violence but make clear that honestly a lot of this violence like the deadly violence of people as rick just talked about, you know, it does involve some Trump Supporters, a 17 yie yearold that kille
